Dead wood quality influences species diversity of rare cryptogams in temperate broadleaved forests

Dead wood is one of the most important indicators of forest naturalness and the most important manageable habitat for biodiversity in forests. Standing and lying dead wood, and especially coarse woody debris, plays an important part in creating habitats for many highly specialized organisms, e.g., insects, fungi, lichens and bacteria. Temperate mixed deciduous forests, rich in species, have been studied only to a small extent from the point of view of the ecology of wood-related cryptogams. Our study aimed at the reduction of the gap in knowledge about the ecological characteristics of dead wood-dependent organisms by focusing on species of cryptogams developing on various dead wood structures typical of temperate non-beech forests. Studies were performed in forests located in Lithuania, Poland, Belarus and Russia. We recorded 48 species of cryptogams: 18 species of bryophytes, 24 species of fungi and 6 species of lichens developing on dead wood. Our study stresses the importance of all types of dead wood as a substrate for the development of rare cryptogam species. Logs were the most important substratum type for cryptogams, followed by snags, dead trees and stumps. The cryptogam species richness on logs was several times higher than on the three other types of substrata. Coarse logs of intermediate decay stages hosted the highest number of cryptogams, followed by freshly fallen logs and, finally, well decayed logs. Assessing the importance of dead wood quality for the studied cryptogams, we found that intermediate decay stages are extremely important for fungi, while bryophytes or lichens do not show a clear preference. The highest number of cryptogams was found on Fraxinus excelsior, Quercus robur and Picea abies, while other tree species had less than half cryptogam species.

Summary: One of the fundamental questions in ecology is how many species exist on Earth. This study estimated the total number of tree species globally, using global crowdsourced data. The findings suggest that there are approximately 73,000 tree species globally, with around 9,000 species yet to be discovered. These results highlight the vulnerability of global forest biodiversity to human-induced changes.

Summary: The latitudinal diversity gradient (LDG) is a recognized global pattern of species richness. This study used high-resolution mapping and global forest inventory data to quantify the drivers of local tree species richness patterns across latitudes. The results showed that annual mean temperature was the dominant predictor of tree species richness, but in the tropics, high species richness was also influenced by local factors such as topography, soil, and human activity.

Tree neighbourhood-scale variation in topsoil chemistry depends on species identity effects related to litter quality

Summary: Trees have a significant impact on the chemistry of topsoil, with the degree and direction of this impact depending on the tree species. Nutrient-poor trees have the potential to degrade soil fertility, while nutrient-rich trees can improve soil quality. In this study conducted in the Bialowieza Forest in Poland, the effects of tree species on topsoil chemistry were investigated on a small scale. The results showed that the concentration of total carbon, availability of phosphorus and base cations, and carbon-to-nitrogen ratio were higher near the trees. However, the pH was not affected by distance. Different tree species had varying effects on the proximity of trees, with nutrient-poor trees having a more negative impact on pH and base cations compared to nutrient-rich trees. The study suggests the importance of mixing nutrient-rich and nutrient-poor species and the choice of tree species in terms of topsoil chemical composition at a small scale within a forest stand.

Predictors of mushroom production in the European temperate mixed deciduous forest

Summary: Mushrooms play a crucial role in ecosystem processes and global food supply, as well as providing income for many people. This study investigated the environmental factors influencing mushroom productivity in a temperate forest. The results showed that mushroom species richness was the main factor affecting mushroom production, which was in turn influenced by soil properties and stand characteristics. Precipitation and ambient temperature also had significant effects on mushroom yield.

Summary: Ungulate populations are increasing in Europe, while atmospheric nitrogen deposition is eutrophying forests. The increase in herbivory is associated with elevated species turnover over time, but this turnover depends on nitrogen levels. Under low nitrogen deposition, herbivory benefits threatened and small-ranged species, but this trend is reversed under high nitrogen deposition. Herbivores also reduce shrub cover, increasing light levels and exacerbating nitrogen effects.

Summary: Given the global impact of COVID-19 pandemic, outbreaks of avian influenza, and other zoonotic pathogen activity, there is an urgent need for a deeper understanding of the human-animal-environment interface and factors influencing the emergence, spread, and impact of zoonotic diseases. We propose a One Health approach and Action Plan for Canada, focusing on strategy and governance, technical leadership, equity, education, and research. A paradigm shift is needed to restore balance with the natural world and recognize the intrinsic value of all living species for the health of all.

Is endozoochoric seed dispersal by large herbivores an evolutionary adaptation? Revisiting the Janzen's 'Foliage is the fruit' hypothesis

Summary: Many plants develop fruits to attract animals for seed dispersion, but some plants with endozoochoric seed dispersion do not have attractive fruits. The Foliage is the Fruit (FF) hypothesis proposes that the entire biomass of plants exists to encourage herbivores to consume them, enhancing seed intake and dispersion. A study tested the FF hypothesis by combining greenhouse seedling emergence and DNA metabarcoding analysis of moose feces, and found that the species composition revealed by the methods did not largely overlap, suggesting a disagreement with the FF hypothesis.

Summary: Biodiversity is important for ecosystems, with higher species richness often leading to increased productivity. However, the relationship between biodiversity and productivity varies across environments and is less pronounced at high levels of species richness. Community evenness can mediate this relationship, and our study shows that it is negatively correlated with species richness and plays a crucial role in the biodiversity-productivity relationship.

Common seed dispersers contribute most to the persistence of a fleshy-fruited tree

Summary: A decade-long study in an old-growth forest in Poland found that the population growth of glossy buckthorn trees is more influenced by a small subset of common generalists rather than specialist frugivores. The study used animal-specific integral projection models to quantify the effect of seed dispersal by 20 animal species on the tree's life cycle. It was found that animal seed dispersal increased population growth by 2.5%, and the effectiveness was related to interaction frequency rather than dispersal quality.

Summary: Many studies have found that mixed species stands have higher gross growth compared to monocultures, but little is known about mortality in mixed stands. By evaluating different plots of Scots pine and European beech across Europe, this study found that mixed stands have higher mortality rates and lower net growth compared to monocultures. The study also showed that the mixing proportion of Scots pine decreased over time, indicating a tendency towards demixing due to pine.

Summary: Deadwood plays a crucial role in forest ecology, and the degradation and carbon assimilation of deadwood are carried out by fungi and bacteria. This study investigated the abundance and distribution of microbial taxa in dead spruce logs and the soil below over a 50-year period. The results showed differences in microbial diversity and relative abundance between the samples from 1974 and 2014, with certain taxa being more predominant in each time period.
