This short critical review outlines the main synthetic strategies used in the designed synthesis of lanthanide-based metal organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs). It explains the impact of the choice of organic linker on the final network topology, and it highlights the applications of Ln-MOFs in the catalysis of organic reactions.

Summary: Two cobalt and nickel coordination compounds were synthesized and characterized using various methods. The molecular structure of one compound showed dynamic disordering, while electronic structure calculations revealed optimized geometries. Although Time Dependent routines in the Density Functional Theory frame could not completely explain ligand field driven d-d transitions, useful information on ligand field scheme was extracted through dedicated analysis.
