Ferro and Flick (2015) describe their efforts to estimate the distribution for a species of rove beetle via the study of specimens from entomological collections, and compare these results to digitally accessible open data. Their study provides an informed and accurate case study that contrasts targeted data capture with generalized public repositories of digital specimen data. However, we feel the conclusions on how global biodiversity data aggregation and publication work require clarification and correction of common misconceptions that we believe will interest those concerned with the future of natural history collections and taxonomy.

The use of Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF)-mediated data in publications written in Chinese

Summary: With the development of biodiversity informatics, GBIF has become the world's largest and most widely-used open data access platform on the occurrence of species in nature. Analysis shows that Chinese publications using GBIF-mediated data focus on topics such as species distribution, climate change, biological invasion, and medicinal plants, but there are various forms of data citation practices.

Data integration enables global biodiversity synthesis

J. Mason Heberling, Joseph T. Miller, Daniel Noesgaard, Scott B. Weingart, Dmitry Schigel

Summary: The study found a significant increase in the number of publications using data mediated by the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) from 2003 to 2019. While data use patterns were diverse, research topics remained stable in some areas, but increased in others, such as species interactions and diseases, showing the vast potential of biodiversity data networks.

Country Compendium of the Global Register of Introduced and Invasive Species

Summary: The Country Compendium of the Global Register of Introduced and Invasive Species (GRIIS) is a compilation of data from 196 individual country checklists of alien species, including those that have evidence of impact at a country level. It serves as a baseline for monitoring distribution and invasion status of major taxonomic groups, and can be used for global analyses of introduced and invasive species. The Compendium allows exploration of gaps and inferred absences of species across countries, and also provides a means for updating individual GRIIS Checklists.

Strict substrate requirements alongside rapid substrate turnover may indicate an early colonization: A case study of Pleurotus calyptratus (Agaricales, Basidiomycota)

Oleh Prylutskyi, Iryna Yatsiuk, Anton Savchenko, Maryna Kit, Oleksii Solodiankin, Dmitry Schigel

Summary: This study aimed to identify the causes for the variation in rarity of Pleurotus calyptratus. Through habitat mapping and repeated surveys, it was found that fruiting is strictly associated with older trees and early decay stages, and not with physical properties of a tree trunk. The substrate suitability period lasts for 1-3 years, resulting in rapid substrate turnover. The DNA of P. calyptratus was also detected in visually healthy trees, indicating its latent presence in hosts and its potential as a pioneer in fungal succession. Despite high spatial and temporal variation in fruiting, no significant trends were observed in population dynamics, suggesting random variation driven by forest stand dynamics. The relative abundance of P. calyptratus in Ukraine is likely due to continuous substrate supply from large homogenous aspen stands.

Summary: Digital twins are emerging as a new tool in monitoring and understanding systems and processes, with the potential to transform ecology digitally. However, it is crucial to avoid misguided developments and instead combine data, models, and domain knowledge and align them with the real world.

Summary: The rate and extent of global biodiversity change is exceeding our capabilities in measurement, monitoring, and prediction. To address this, we propose the establishment of a global biodiversity observing system (GBiOS) that is interconnected, coordinating worldwide monitoring efforts and informing action towards international biodiversity targets.
