Organic pollutants in water and wastewater have been causing serious environmental problems. The arbitrary discharge of wastewater by industries, and handling, use, and disposal constitute a means by which phenols, flame retardants (FRs), phthalates (PAEs) and other toxic organic pollutants enter the ecosystem. Moreover, these organic pollutants are not completely removed during treatment processes and might be degraded into highly toxic derivatives, which has led to their occurrence in the environment. Phenols, FRs and PAEs are thus highly toxic, carcinogenic and mutagenic, and are capable of disrupting the endocrine system. Therefore, investigation to understand the sources, pathways, behavior, toxicity and exposure to phenols, FRs and PAEs in the environment is necessary. Formation of different by-products makes it difficult to compare the efficacy of the treatment processes, most especially when other organic matters are present. Hence, high levels of phenols, FRs and PAEs removal could be attained with in-line combined treatment processes.

Performance Evaluation of Ultra-Violet Light and Iron Oxide Nanoparticles for the Treatment of Synthetic Petroleum Wastewater: Kinetics of COD Removal

Cecilia O. Akintayo, Omolola H. Aremu, Wilfred N. Igboama, Simphiwe M. Nelana, Olushola S. Ayanda

Summary: The study found that the combination of UV light and IONPs is more effective in removing COD from synthetic petroleum wastewater compared to using them independently. Under the conditions of UV light at a wavelength of 254 nm, pH of 8, and 1.0 g of IONPs, the COD removal rate increased significantly from 10.5% to 95.5%.

Evaluation of corrosion and scaling potentials of oilfield waters in an offshore producing facility, Niger Delta

T. A. Bolaji, E. G. Olumayede, A. M. Ojo

Summary: This study investigated water samples from Miocene reservoirs and seawater samples used for water injection in the offshore Niger Delta, revealing potential risks of corrosion and scaling. Different metals showed varying corrosion rates, with steel exhibiting the highest rate. Adequate treatment is necessary to mitigate the potential severe corrosion risks associated with the use of seawater samples as injection waters.

The theoretical study of the oxidation reaction of hydroxyl radical for the removal of volatile organic aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes from the atmosphere

Adebayo A. Adeniyi, Joy N. Adeniyi, Emmanuel G. Olumayede

Summary: High levels of volatile or semivolatile organic chemicals are released annually into the atmosphere. Hydroxyl radical oxidation is an efficient method for removing anthropogenic pollutants from the atmosphere. This computational study investigated the mechanism of aldehyde removal from the atmosphere through hydrogen abstraction by hydroxide radicals. The results showed that the abstraction of hydrogen from aldehyde is both thermodynamically and kinetically favorable, with aromatic aldehydes being more kinetically favorable compared to other types of aldehydes.

Artificial neural network and response surface methodology for optimization of corrosion inhibition of mild steel in 1 M HCl by Musa paradisiaca peel extract

Olusola S. Amodu, Moradeyo O. Odunlami, Joseph T. Akintola, Tunde V. Ojumu, Olushola S. Ayanda

Summary: In this study, banana peel extract was used as an environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in hydrochloric acid. The inhibition efficiency was assessed by monitoring the pH of the acid solution and the evolution of hydrogen gas, and optimized using response surface methodology and artificial neural network. The results showed that the concentration of the extract had an impact on the corrosion inhibition efficiency, and the optimum conditions were determined. Both RSM and ANN were found to be effective optimization techniques, with ANN providing accurate predictions even with limited data.

Hydrophobic modification of cellulose from oil palm waste in aqueous medium

Samuel O. Olusanya, Sunday M. Ajayi, Kehinde O. Sodeinde, Dele. P. Fapojuwo, Michael O. Atunde, Alex E. Diduyemi, Emmanuel G. Olumayede, Olayide S. Lawal

Summary: This study investigates the extraction and green hydrophobic modification of cellulose from oil palm waste using aqueous medium. Cellulose is isolated from empty oil palm bunch (EOPB) and palm frond (PF), respectively, and modified in an aqueous medium using benzoyl chloride to produce cellulose benzoate esters. Characterization techniques include X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The green synthesis techniques using water and sodium hydroxide as reaction medium are fast, safe, cost-effective, and produce pure cellulose products with well-preserved structure. The modified cellulose can be used commercially and the green synthesis technique overcomes environmental challenges associated with other chemical modification methods.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Metronidazole Using Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles Supported on Acha Waste

Summary: The presence of emerging pollutants like pharmaceutical compounds in the environment is currently a concern. Advanced oxidation processes, specifically UV light combined with zinc oxide nanoparticles and/or acha waste, showed to be more effective than UV alone for the removal of metronidazole. The addition of a catalyst enhanced the degradation of metronidazole from 41.0% up to 86.1%.

Assessing the Potential of Oils from Palm Kernel, Tiger Nut and Castor Seed for Biodiesel Production: A Comparative Analysis

Tunmise Adigun Adeyemi, Godwin Oladele Olutona, Cecilia Akintayo

Summary: The depletion of fossil fuel supplies and the environmental concerns have led to the search for acceptable alternative fuels, such as biodiesel. This study compared the quality of biodiesel produced from palm kernel oil (PKO), castor seed oil (CSO), and tiger nut oil (TGO) to international standards. The results showed that all three feedstocks had acceptable biodiesel quality, with PKO, TGO, and CSO biodiesels containing methyl petroselinate, oleic acid, and ricinoleic acid as the most prevalent fatty acids, respectively.
