Adsorption of methylene blue from aqueous solutions using water treatment sludge modified with sodium alginate as a low cost adsorbent

In this research, aluminum-based drinking water treatment sludge is used as a starting material and immobilized by sodium alginate to develop low cost adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. The studied variables included pH, adsorbent dose, initial MB concentration and contact time. Characteristics of the adsorbent were also studied using scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). It was revealed from kinetic tests that removal efficiency of MB was 88.5% under the optimum conditions of pH 8, initial MB concentration of 50 mg/L, contact time of 60 min, and adsorbent dose of 0.3 g/L. The oxygen functional groups such as -OH, C-O-C and C=O were found on the surface of developed adsorbent by FTIR. In addition, the adsorption data fitted well the Langmuir adsorption model with the maximum sorption capacity of 909.1 mg/g, and followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics. Findings of this study indicate that the prepared adsorbent is promising for further development of an effective and economical adsorbent material in the near future.

Investigation of seasonal variation and probabilistic risk assessment of BTEX emission in municipal solid waste transfer station

Summary: The study investigated the BTEX concentrations in the ambient air of a municipal solid waste transfer station in Hamadan city and estimated cancer and non-cancer risks associated with inhalation exposure to these compounds. Results showed higher BTEX levels in summer compared to spring, with benzene posing a potential cancer risk above recommended standards and xylene exceeding suggested values. Sensitivity analysis indicated that pollutant concentration had the greatest impact on risk variance.

Modelling of cefixime (CFIX) removal using photocatalyst/UV/polyurethane by response surface methodology (RSM): optimisation and kinetic study

Summary: The present study investigated the removal of cefixime antibiotic from aqueous solution using TiO2 and ZnO photocatalyst immobilized at polyurethane. The optimal conditions for the TiO2/UV/PU process were found to be pH of 4.80, catalyst dosage of 2.60 g/m(2), initial cefixime concentration of 25.90 mg/L, and reaction time of 85 min. For the ZnO/UV/PU process, the optimum conditions were determined as pH of 6.70, ZnO dosage of 2.40 g/m(2), CFIX concentration of 25 mg/L, and reaction time of 89 min. The results suggest that the photocatalyst/UV/PU process is effective for the removal of cefixime antibiotic from aqueous solution.

Risk assessment of imidacloprid and dichlorvos associated with dermal and inhalation exposure in cucumber greenhouse applicators: A cross-sectional study in Hamadan, Iran

Summary: This study investigated the dermal and inhalation exposure of cucumber greenhouse applicators to the pesticides imidacloprid and dichlorvos and evaluated the health risk. Results showed that the arms were the most contaminated anatomical regions, and inhalation exposure contributed minimally to the total exposure. Dichlorvos was found to have a potential risk to human health, indicating a need for concern from policy makers in pest management.

Summary: A nanostructure consisting of Fe/Ag covered by ZnO was synthesized using a chemical method. The degradation of 2,4-D was studied by optimizing pH, initial 2,4-D concentration, catalyst dosage, and irradiation time. The results showed that the nanostructure exhibited promising results in terms of pesticide degradation.

Efficiency of the catalytic ozonation processes using nanoparticles deposited on pumice in the removal of bisphenol A

Summary: This study investigated the removal of BPA using pumice supported with titanium dioxide and zirconium dioxide nanoparticles. The results showed that under optimal conditions, both the O-3/nTiO(2)/H2O2 and O-3/nZrO(2)/H(2)O(2) processes achieved approximately 100% removal efficiency for BPA.

Effect of household processing on pesticide residues in post-harvested tomatoes: determination of the risk exposure and modeling of experimental results via RSM

Enhanced degradation of Rhodamine B dye by Fenton/peracetic acid and photo-Fenton/peracetic acid processes

Summary: This research investigates the efficiency of Fenton- PAA and photo-Fenton- PAA processes in removing RhB dye from aqueous solutions. The results show that decreasing pH and dye concentration can improve the removal efficiency. The photo-Fenton- PAA process exhibits a high performance in a short time and can completely degrade the RhB dye into harmless byproducts.

Summary: This study conducted side by side air sampling and RT-PCR analysis, finding no SARS-CoV-2 in the indoor air of hospitals, while two samples from non-hospitalized patients' houses tested positive. Most hospitalized patients used oxygen masks and face masks, which may explain the absence of the virus in indoor air of hospitals.

Facile fabrication of amino-functionalized MIL-68(Al) metal-organic framework for effective adsorption of arsenate (As(V))

Summary: An amino-functionalized MIL-68(Al) metal-organic framework was synthesized and its adsorption performance and reusability for arsenate were studied. The results showed that the adsorption of arsenate on the material was influenced by solution pH, adsorbent dose, arsenate concentration, and reaction time. Under optimal conditions, the predicted and experimental arsenate removal efficiencies were 99.45% and 99.87%, respectively. The study demonstrated that the amino-functionalized MIL-68(Al) can be an effective material for the treatment of arsenate-contaminated water, with high surface area and reusability.

Anaerobic co-digestion using poultry slaughterhouse and vegetable wastes to enhance biogas yield: effect of different C/N ratios

Summary: The aim of this study was to determine the feasibility of producing biogas by combining solid poultry slaughterhouse wastes with fruit and vegetable solid wastes and to obtain the optimum conditions for maximum biogas production. The study found that the highest biogas yield occurred when the C/N ratio of the feed was 30.

Bismuth-doped 3D carbon felt/PbO2 electrocatalyst for degradation of diuron herbicide and improvement of pesticide wastewater biodegradability

Summary: A bismuth-doped three-dimensional networked carbon felt/PbO2 anode was developed for the electrocatalytic degradation of diuron and treatment of real pesticide wastewater. The Bi-doped anode showed significantly improved electrochemical performance compared to the pristine PbO2 anode. The optimized degradation efficiency of diuron was 97.6% and the COD removal efficiency was 98.7% under the best reaction conditions.

Summary: The study found that approximately a fifth of the global burden of type 2 diabetes is attributable to PM2.5 exposure, with high burdens estimated in Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and South America. The burden of type 2 diabetes attributable to PM2.5 has increased by 50% since 1990, driven largely by population growth and ageing.
