Summary: Obesity is closely related to significant comorbidities, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, highlighting the importance of monitoring liver fibrosis. Developing non-invasive diagnostic methods for the rising prevalence of obesity and NAFLD is crucial. Two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE) shows promise as a novel and non-invasive method for assessing liver fibrosis in patients with obesity and NAFLD.

Summary: The study revealed that many patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who meet the criteria for bariatric surgery are not receiving adequate medical or surgical management for their obesity. There is a need to improve referrals from T2DM services to weight management/bariatric services and to increase the use of GLP1 agonists and SGLT2 inhibitors when appropriate. These findings support the prioritization of obesity management in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

Summary: Diabetes is a major public health issue affecting approximately 1.4 million Australians, especially in South Western Sydney, where the hospitalization rate is higher than average. In-hospital mortality rate is significantly greater in people with diabetes compared to those without, with factors such as age, gender, marital status, length of stay, intensive care, and primary diagnoses influencing mortality rates.

Summary: Low-grade inflammation is a common underlying factor in chronic diseases like asthma, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes. Various mediators, including endotoxin and gut microbiota, play a significant role. Understanding these factors can improve disease management and advance our knowledge of low-grade inflammatory diseases.

Summary: This study compared the characteristics of ICU admissions between patients with and without diabetes in public hospitals of South Western Sydney. The results showed a higher ICU admission rate among patients with diabetes, and one in every two admissions to ICU had a long stay. Factors such as death and circulatory system diseases were associated with increased odds of long ICU stay.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of an intensive non-surgical weight management program on weight loss and metabolic outcomes in patients with varying degrees of weight-related complications. The results showed that after 12 months of treatment, there was significant weight loss and improvement in metabolic parameters in both groups, regardless of the severity of complications. This suggests that intensive non-surgical weight management programs can be effective in achieving clinically meaningful weight loss in patients with severe obesity.

Summary: This study found that higher levels of vitamin D are associated with improved metabolic health after sleeve-gastrectomy surgery in severely obese patients. Furthermore, baseline levels of vitamin D can predict the remission of type 2 diabetes post-surgery.

Summary: This study investigated the association between endotoxin and telomere length among Saudi adults with different adiposity and type 2 diabetes mellitus status. The results showed that obesity was associated with shorter telomere length, and the association was stronger in non-T2DM obese individuals. The study also found that telomere length and HDL-cholesterol predicted variations in vitamin D levels in the non-T2DM group.

Summary: This study examined the changes in obesity prevalence and associated lifestyle factors in the Goulburn Valley region of Victoria. The results showed an increase in obesity prevalence over 15 years, particularly in rural areas. However, there was a decrease in obesity prevalence among individuals with adequate fruit intake. Obesity was associated with older age, consumption of fried food, and physical inactivity.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the prevalence of underweight and its sociodemographic and household environmental correlates among women of reproductive age in Nepal. The study found that while the prevalence of underweight has decreased over time, it remains a public health challenge. The findings of this study can help in designing health promotion campaigns to address undernutrition.
