Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between urinary tract infection (UTI) in adults and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) levels. The study found that UTI patients had lower serum 25OHD levels, especially in women. Women with UTI had significantly lower 25OHD concentrations than those without UTI. No association between serum 25OHD levels and UTI was found in men. The multivariable logistic regression models showed significant associations between UTI and 25OHD, female sex, neutrophilic lymphocyte ratio and C-reactive protein.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the association between vitamin D supplementation and the risk of lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) among infants. The study found that vitamin D supplementation was significantly associated with a reduced risk of LRTI in infants, and the risk reduction was linearly related to the supplementation dose.

Summary: Recent studies have suggested that vitamin D supplementation may reduce the severity of infections, but its effect on hospitalization for infection has not been confirmed. This study found that vitamin D supplementation had no effect on the incidence of hospitalization for any infection, but it reduced the number of extended hospitalizations lasting more than 6 days.

Summary: Lower respiratory tract infection is a major cause of childhood mortality and viral infection is the main pathogen. Human rhinovirus, respiratory syncytial virus, and parainfluenza virus type 3 are the most frequently identified pathogens. Coinfection of virus and bacteria can lead to more severe pneumonia.

Summary: This study evaluated the clinical impact of rhinovirus (RV) and enterovirus (EV) infections in young children with severe lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI). It found that single RV/EV detections were associated with severe disease, while multiple viral detections resulted in reduced clinical severity. Furthermore, no specific associations were found between RV/EV species and severity outcomes.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the association between newborn bacterial colonization and infant respiratory morbidity in the first 6 months of life. The results showed that 53% of infants had respiratory tract colonization, with Streptococcus pneumoniae being the most common organism. Colonization with S. pneumoniae was associated with a reduced risk of respiratory morbidity at 6 months.

Summary: A combination of clinical, laboratory, and chest radiographic features can help identify children at higher risk of Mycoplasma pneumoniae (Mp) lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI). Age, duration of symptoms, and chest radiographic findings have the highest predictive value for Mp LRTI. This information can assist in decision-making for further testing or macrolide antibiotic treatment.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of a newly established CF registry system in Turkey on the follow-up and care of CF patients. The results showed that the registry system led to higher z-scores of height and BMI, increased usage of medications for lung function improvement, and lower incidence of PBS. This suggests that the registry system has positively influenced the care of CF patients.

Summary: This report presents a case of a family with five patients with ILD. The patients were diagnosed with ILD through clinical and radiological evaluations. Molecular genetic analysis of the family revealed two homozygous rare variants that were closely associated with the phenotype. Network analysis suggested that the variant in the WRN gene could be the main factor leading to the ILD phenotype, potentially through the altered DNA repair and telomere maintenance pathways.

Summary: The study conducted face-to-face interviews with healthcare workers in 19 pandemic hospitals across 13 provinces in Turkey between September and November 2021. It found that 33.5% of the 1,556 participants perceived a need for mental health services, but only 8.5% actually received these services. Factors such as age, gender, smoking, chronic diseases, mental disorders, recent contact with COVID-19, vaccination history, occupation, and COVID-19 exposure at work were significantly associated with the perceived need for mental health services. Higher scores in mental health assessments and lower scores in quality of life assessments were related to the perceived need for mental health services. The findings highlight the significant need for mental health support among Turkish healthcare workers during the pandemic and identify high-priority groups for intervention.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the neutrophil, lymphocyte ratio (NLR), mean platelet volume (MPV), and immunoreactive trypsinogen (IRT) as possible inflammatory biomarkers for cystic fibrosis (CF) in infants. The results showed that higher MPV and IRT levels during newborn screening (NBS) period were associated with worse nutritional outcomes, which may reflect chronic inflammation. Therefore, children with higher MPV and IRT should be closely followed up in terms of chronic inflammation and nutritional status.

Summary: In this study, the researchers aimed to assess the number of CF patients in Turkey's CF Registry who required lung transplantation and to examine the differences between patients with rapid decline in FEV1 and those without rapid decline. They found that there was no significant difference in treatment, chronic infection status, or complications between the groups. However, patients in the group with rapid FEV1 decline had a higher average weight z-score, suggesting a potential indirect link between nutritional status and the need for lung transplantation referral.

Summary: This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the cutoff values of immunoreactive trypsinogen (IRT) and investigate the relationship between IRT values and clinical characteristics in children with cystic fibrosis (CF). The study included data from children with positive newborn screening (NBS) from 2015 to 2021. Sensitivity and specificity of IRT cutoff values were assessed, and the positive predictive value (PPV) was determined. The study found that while the sensitivity of CF NBS was high, the PPV was significantly lower than expected. Revising the NBS strategy may help overcome false-positive results.
