Summary: This study conducted a prospective cohort study of liver transplants performed in the institution for the first six years. Various strategies were used, including balanced general anesthesia, fluid restriction, thromboelastometry, and others. The fast-track group had a significantly lower 30-day readmission rate compared to the non-fast-track group.

Summary: This study compared the 30-day outcomes of ultra-fast-track minimally invasive valve surgery (UFT-MIVS) with conventional MIVS (c-MIVS) in cardiac surgery. The results showed that UFT-MIVS reduces the occurrence of postoperative respiratory insufficiency and agitation/delirium, and patients receiving UFT-MIVS had shorter intensive care unit length of stay and hospital stay.

Summary: This study aimed to review the influence of enhanced rehabilitation on outcomes of pelvic organ prolapse surgery. The findings showed no significant difference in operating time, complications, blood loss, and pain scores before and after the adoption of the enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) program. However, there was a noticeable decrease in intravenous intakes, opioid administration, length of stay, and overall hospital costs with the adoption of ERAS. Patients were also able to mobilize more rapidly and reported higher satisfaction levels.

Summary: ERAS is a pathway designed to promote early recovery for patients undergoing major surgery, with three important components: preoperative, intraoperative, postoperative program. Adoption of ERAS can lead to lower complication rates, shorter hospital stays, improved patient outcomes, and reduced overall cost of care.

Summary: This narrative review summarizes the establishment of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathways in radical cystectomy (RC), with a focus on the role of nursing. The review discusses the current status of implementation and adherence to ERAS protocols in RC and the impact on primary outcomes. Nursing has been at the forefront of ERAS and plays a crucial role in supporting patients throughout their recovery journey. Implementation of ERAS has shown reduced hospitalization and improved patient care, but more research is needed to identify factors that can further reduce post-operative complications.

Summary: Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) shows potential benefits in cancer surgeries by improving the initiation and completion of adjuvant chemotherapy after surgery, with higher adherence leading to better outcomes. However, the association between ERAS protocol and long-term overall survival or cancer-specific survival remains inconclusive based on current evidence.

Summary: This article presents the official statement on enhanced recovery after bariatric surgery (ERABS) in Italy. Through the research and discussion of an expert task force, a series of evidence-based recommendations are proposed, stating that ERABS reduces hospital stay, does not increase complications or surgical costs compared to the conventional approach.

Summary: This study evaluated postoperative clinical outcomes of octogenarians undergoing pancreatoduodenectomy (PD) and provided evidence on current UK practice. The results showed higher 90-day mortality rates in octogenarians, but comparable rates of postoperative complications and 30-day readmission between octogenarians and younger patients.

Summary: This retrospective study focused on patients aged 75 and above who underwent PDC for pancreatic cancer. The study found that elderly patients had higher postoperative mortality and more non-surgical complications. However, there were no significant differences in overall survival and disease-free survival between the elderly group and the younger group. Therefore, age itself should not be considered a contraindication for PDC, as long as patients are carefully selected.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the impact of laparoscopic surgery on weight loss parameters in morbid obese patients who underwent BPD, finding that laparoscopic surgery resulted in significantly shorter hospital stays and reduced incidence of incisional hernias compared to open surgery, with no significant difference in early postoperative complications.

Summary: Pollution in the seas and oceans, especially microplastics, has a significant impact on marine organisms. This study evaluated the effects of human activity on Holothuria tubulosa by analyzing biomarkers. The results showed higher microplastics presence in sediments and digestive tracts from highly urbanized areas. The study also revealed an antioxidant response in H. tubulosa in the most impacted areas.

Summary: Stressful situations lead to an increase in reactive oxygen species, while the introduction of new potential predators induces physiological stress in native fauna. This study found that the moorish gecko exhibited behavioral responses and changes in oxidative stress biomarkers when exposed to the invasive predator horseshoe whip snake, indicating its ability to recognize and adapt to the snake.

Summary: This study evaluated the potential competition between the invasive Penicillus capitatus and Halimeda incrassata and the native Padina pavonica by using biomarkers. The presence of the invasive algae significantly decreased the densities of native algae and resulted in an antioxidant response in P. pavonica, indicating a context of stress. However, there was no evidence of oxidative damage. Therefore, the presence of the invasive H. incrassata and P. capitatus can be considered a source of competitive stress for P. pavonica.

Summary: The aim of this study is to demonstrate the added value of 3D reconstruction models and artificial intelligence for preoperative planning in complex perianal Crohn's disease. MRI is the gold standard for diagnosis, but lacks high specificity. This study found that using 3D reconstruction models from MRI can provide a more visual representation of perianal disease and assist with preoperative planning.

Summary: This study aimed to identify the parasite affecting Xyricthys novacula, determine its abundance in different areas, and evaluate the immune and antioxidant responses in the fish. The parasite was identified as Scaphanocephalus sp. and had a higher abundance in the non-protected area compared to the marine protected area. The presence of the parasite resulted in increased immune and antioxidant responses in both the mucus and liver of X. novacula.

Summary: This study analyzed the postoperative outcomes and survival of patients with advanced metastatic colon cancer who underwent simultaneous liver resection and peritoneal cytoreduction with HIPEC. The results showed that simultaneous peritoneal and liver resection was associated with increased postoperative morbidity and hospital stay, but with similar postoperative mortality and overall and disease free survival. These findings reflect the evolution of these patients and support the incorporation of this surgical strategy in highly selected patients within a multimodal therapeutic plan.

Summary: This observational study examines overall survival and disease-free survival in patients with primary liposarcoma. The study found that compartment surgery does not provide benefits in terms of overall survival and disease-free survival. The ASA classification (>= 3) predicts a poor prognosis in both overall survival and disease-free survival. Resection with free margins, defined as R0 in this study, shows better disease-free survival.

Summary: This study aimed to demonstrate that near-infrared fluorescence cholangiography (NIRF-C) with a very low dose of indocyanine green (ICG) provides good visualization of the biliary tract while avoiding hepatic hyperluminescence. The results showed that NIRF-C with 0.25mg ICG during laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) allows real-time identification of biliary ducts and avoids hepatic hyperluminescence, even in obese patients or those with gallbladder inflammation.
