Brazilian food industry employs several kinds of fruits in manufacturing food products, including the bocaiuva fruit (Acrocomiaaculeata). The two-dimensional gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detector (GC x GC/TOFMS) was employed to analyze bio-oils generated from the endorcap, bark and fiber of bocaiuva residues. The bio-oil generated from the endocarp proved to be of the highest complexity in the set with 151 tentatively identified compounds. On the other hand, the bio-oils generated from the bark and the fiber led to 111 and 78 tentatively identified compounds, respectively. Using standards, 24 compounds (59.91% of the total) were confirmed in the bio-oil of bark, while 28 compounds (42.23%) and 19 compounds (47.60%) were confirmed for fiber and endocarp bio-oils, respectively. In bio-oils of endocarp and bark the compounds were identified and classified as phenols, alcohols, carboxylic acids, esters, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, anhydrides and hydrocarbons. There was a predominance of hydrocarbons in the bio-oils of fiber, with no identification of ethers, anhydrides and aldehydes. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Metal bioaccumulation in fish from the Araguari River (Amazon biome) and human health risks from fish consumption

Lucilene Finoto Viana, Fabio Kummrow, Claudia Andrea Lima Cardoso, Nathalya Alice de Lima, Bruno do Amaral Crispim, Alexeia Barufatti, Alexandro Cezar Florentino

Summary: High concentrations of metals have been found in the Araguari River lower section, posing potential risks to human consumption through bioaccumulation in fish. Some fish species showed concentrations of lead and cadmium exceeding the Brazilian limits, indicating health risks. The consumption of all fish species, particularly detritivorous ones, presents risks when considering the mixture of metals. The study highlights the importance of establishing an environmental monitoring program and educating the local population about safe fish consumption and preparation.

Green tea beneficial effects involve changes in the profile of immune cells in the adipose tissue of obese mice

Kaue Tognolli, Victoria Silva, Celso Pereira Batista Sousa-Filho, Claudia Andrea Lima Cardoso, Renata Gorjao, Rosemari Otton

Summary: This study aims to investigate the immune cell population in the subcutaneous and epididymal white adipose tissue (WAT) of obese mice, as well as the effects of green tea. The results suggest that a high-fat diet and thermoneutrality can induce chronic inflammation and insulin resistance. However, green tea can prevent weight gain, inflammation, and tissue fibrosis, while maintaining a similar immune cell profile to that of lean mice.

Summary: This study evaluates the bioherbicidal potential of Schinus terebinthifolia fruit essential oil emulsions on germination parameters of Lactuca sativa and Urochloa brizantha seeds. The results indicate that the emulsions have nanoemulsion particle sizes smaller than 735 nm with spherical and cuboid shapes. The major compounds present in the essential oil are alpha-pinene, germacrene-D, and beta-pinene. Urochloa brizantha seed germination is reduced at doses >2 mg mL-1 and completely inhibited at 32 mg mL-1, while Lactuca sativa germination is dose-dependent without total inhibition. Decrease in photosynthetic pigments, flavonoids, phenolics, and total tannins, as well as alteration in enzyme activity, is observed.

Polycyclic aromatic sulfur heterocycles used as molecular markers in crude oils and source rocks

Lua Morena Leoncio de Oliveira, Diego Nery do Amaral, Kalil Lopes de Amorim Ferreira, Carolina Santiago Souza, Gisele Mara Hadlich, Maria Elisabete Machado

Summary: Polycyclic aromatic sulfur heterocycles (PASHs), such as benzothiophenes (BTs), dibenzothiophenes (DBTs), and benzonaphthothiophenes (BNTs), are common in crude oil and source rocks and are widely studied as molecular markers (S-markers) in organic geochemistry. These S-markers are highly stable and degradation-resistant, making them valuable for understanding thermal evolution, depositional environment, maturity, petroleum migration, and biodegradation. The presence of specific DBT-related markers in oils can indicate maturity and susceptibility to biodegradation. This study provides the first overview of PASHs used as geochemical markers and discusses various analytical techniques for their quantification and characterization.

Summary: This paper provides insights into the optimal configuration of CSP plants with different penetrations of wind power by proposing an unconstrained optimization model. The results suggest that large solar multiples and TES are preferred in order to maximize profit, especially when combined with high penetrations of wind and photovoltaic plants. Additionally, the study demonstrates the economy and feasibility of installing electric heaters (EH) in CSP plants, which show a linear correlation with the penetration of variable energy resources.
