Summary: This study examined the relationship between psychotic symptoms during bipolar depressive episodes and suicidal ideation among outpatients with bipolar disorder. The results indicated that patients with psychotic symptoms were more likely to report active suicidal thoughts, including specific plans and methods.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate brain functional differences between pediatric bipolar disorder (PBD) patients with and without psychotic symptoms. The results showed distinct brain functional patterns in these two groups of PBD patients, providing empirical evidence for different clinical outcomes based on the presence or absence of psychotic symptoms.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of BD type, stage, and the history of psychotic symptoms (HoPS) on the severity of neurological and cerebellar soft signs (NSS and CSS). The results showed that staging was closely related to CSS and NSS scores, while the history of psychotic symptoms was associated with oculomotor deficits. The study found that late-stage BD had more severe CSS and NSS than the control group, while early-stage BD only showed differences in posture and gait disturbances compared to the control group.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the prevalence rates of psychotic symptoms in bipolar disorders. The findings showed a high prevalence of psychotic symptoms in BD type I, with a lifetime prevalence of 63% and a point prevalence of 54%. More research is needed in BD type II and other subtypes.

Summary: The authors found that polygenic scores (PGSs) can complement family history to improve identification of risk for major mood and psychotic disorders. PGSs for neuroticism and subjective well-being are significantly associated with the onsets of disorders, and PGSs for psychiatric illness have limited predictive power when family history is known.

Summary: This study found structural brain differences between pediatric bipolar disorder patients with and without psychotic symptoms, with psychotic patients showing more extensive brain lesions in the prefrontal-limbic-striatum circuit. These findings suggest that psychotic symptoms in bipolar disorder may be associated with more severe symptoms due to underlying brain structural abnormalities.

Summary: Data-driven approaches are crucial for understanding the heterogeneity and overlap in transdiagnostic samples. This study used plasma proteomics-based clustering to subtype patients with psychotic-affective disorders. Significant differences were found between patients and healthy controls in terms of pathologic peptides. Latent class analysis revealed distinct classes of patients, with the negative symptom factor being significantly different between the classes. This highlights the significance of negative symptoms in understanding the heterogeneity and overlap of psychotic-affective disorders.

Summary: This study used ecological momentary assessment to investigate the relationship between perceived burdensomeness (PB) and thwarted belonginess (TB) with suicidal ideation (SI) in individuals with psychotic disorders. The results showed that burdensomeness varied less within participants compared to belongingness, and participants with SI had higher burdensomeness ratings and lower belongingness ratings. Social context, psychotic symptoms, mood, and SI were all found to be related to these interpersonal suicide-related risk factors.

Summary: The presence of psychotic symptoms in patients with bipolar disorder is associated with a more severe course of the illness, including lower age of onset, higher episode rates, and higher rates of suicide attempts and hospitalizations. However, the presence of psychotic symptoms is also associated with better cognitive functioning.

Summary: This study examined the contribution of parental bipolar disorder and psychiatric comorbidities in predicting psychiatric symptoms and disorders in 2-5-year-old children. The results showed that children of parents with bipolar disorder had significant elevations in behavioral, mood, and anxiety disorders and symptoms. Parental bipolar disorder predicted child disruptive behavioral symptoms, while comorbid parental anxiety was a stronger predictor of child anxiety symptoms.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of psychotic symptoms on olfactory function in patients with bipolar disorder and compared olfactory function between the episode and remission phases. The results indicate that olfactory function is impaired in patients with episodic bipolar disorder, regardless of the presence of psychotic symptoms. Olfactory identification may be a characteristic marker of bipolar disorder, while olfactory sensitivity may be a state marker to distinguish between episodic and euthymic bipolar disorder.

Summary: The aim of this study was to examine the factors associated with duration of untreated illness (DUI) in borderline personality disorder (BPD). A chart review of 152 patients followed up by community psychiatry services in Milan and Monza, Italy was conducted. Pearson correlation and analyses of variances were used to analyze the association between DUI and socioeconomic and clinical variables. The results showed that a longer DUI was associated with several variables, but these associations were not maintained in the regression analyses. Therefore, DUI does not appear to be significantly associated with specific clinical aspects of BPD or the course and outcome of the disorder. Larger studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Summary: The aim of this study was to summarize available data on the link between air pollution exposure and the onset and severity of psychiatric disorders in pregnant women during the perinatal period. Nine studies were included in the analysis, with most focusing on the association between air pollutant exposure and postpartum depression (PPD) onset. The results showed a significant association between PM2.5 and NO2 exposure and PPD onset, as well as an association between PBDE blood levels and more severe depressive symptoms. One study also observed a link between exposure to PM2.5, PM10 during pregnancy and stressful symptoms.

Summary: Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and Panic Disorder (PD) share similar neurobiological mechanisms and clinical features, leading to potential misdiagnosis and delayed treatment. This study aimed to assess the relationship between clinical and socio-demographic markers and GAD/PD diagnosis. Out of 290 outpatients identified with PD or GAD in mental health services in Italy, post-onset psychiatric and medical comorbidities were associated with GAD, while treatment with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) was associated with PD. GAD patients had a worse prognosis due to higher comorbidity rates, relapses, and poorer treatment compliance. The association between GAD and psychodynamic psychotherapy was a unique finding of this study.

Summary: The aim of this systematic review was to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on binge eating disorder, including new onset and clinical changes. Twelve studies with 4326 participants were included, and the findings suggest an increase in BED diagnoses and worsening of symptoms during the pandemic. However, the quality of the included studies was weak to moderate, and there was high heterogeneity among the studies, indicating a need for further research to validate these findings and develop preventive strategies and personalized treatments.

Summary: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common psychiatric condition that requires prompt treatment to prevent psychiatric comorbidity and impairment in social and occupational functioning. This study systematically reviewed the literature on potential biomarkers for SAD. While some preliminary evidence suggests the role of certain genes and neuroimaging findings in SAD, the results overall remain inconsistent and need further investigation on larger samples to identify more specific biomarkers.
