Non-target Site Herbicide Resistance Is Conferred by Two Distinct Mechanisms in Black-Grass (Alopecurus myosuroides)

Sara Franco-Ortega, Alina Goldberg-Cavalleri, Andrew Walker, Melissa Brazier-Hicks, Nawaporn Onkokesung, Robert Edwards

Summary: Non-target site resistance to herbicides in black-grass results in enhanced tolerance to multiple chemistries and can arise from at least two distinct mechanisms, one involving enhanced metabolism and the other complex changes in gene regulatory networks. This resistance is associated with increased detoxification genes and protein levels, such as AmGSTF1, and shows different gene networks activated in response to different stresses, highlighting the complexity of resistance mechanisms in weeds.

Summary: In this study, safener-inducible CYPs responsible for herbicide metabolism in maize were identified using transcriptomics, proteomics, and functional assays. CYP81A9 and CYP81A16 were found to be the dominant enzymes in safener-treated field maize.

ABC transporters linked to multiple herbicide resistance in blackgrass (Alopecurus myosuroides)

Alina Goldberg-Cavalleri, Nawaporn Onkokesung, Sara Franco-Ortega, Robert Edwards

Summary: In this study, the importance of ABC transporters in enhanced metabolic resistance (EMR) and herbicide resistance in blackgrass was investigated. It was found that AmABCC1, AmABCC2, and AmABCC3 were involved in compartmentalizing herbicide metabolites into the vacuole. Transgenic yeast experiments confirmed the role of AmABCC1 and AmABCC2 in enhancing tolerance to the sulfonylurea herbicide, mesosulfuron-methyl. These findings demonstrate the significance of transporters in herbicide resistance through the transport of herbicides and their metabolites into the vacuole.

Transcriptomic and co-expression network analyses on diverse wheat landraces identifies candidate master regulators of the response to early drought

Liam J. Barratt, Isaac J. Reynolds, Sara Franco Ortega, Andrea L. Harper

Summary: Researchers used the YoGI landrace panel to study the early drought response in wheat and identified genes associated with this response. They also identified two potential key genes that may play important roles in regulating the physiological early drought response in plants.
