Effective patient-provider communication is not a primary focus of medical school curricula. Motivational interviewing (MI) is a patient centered, directive communication framework appropriate for in health care. Research on MI's causal mechanisms has established patient change talk as a mediator of behavior change. Current MI research focuses on identifying which provider communication skills are responsible for evoking change talk. MI recommends informing, asking, and listening. Research provides evidence that asking for and reflecting patient change talk are effective communication strategies, but cautions providers to inform judiciously. Supporting a patient's decision making autonomy is an important strategy to promote health behaviors.

Summary: This study aims to develop a mobile asthma management intervention for African American emerging adults (AAEAs) to improve asthma control. The intervention includes multiple technological components such as motivational enhancement system, supportive accountability, SMS text messaging, and physical activity tracking. By testing these components and combinations, the most effective mobile intervention will be identified.

Technology-Delivered Adaptations of Motivational Interviewing for the Prevention and Management of Chronic Diseases: Scoping Review

Havisha Pedamallu, Matthew J. Ehrhardt, Julia Maki, April Idalski Carcone, Melissa M. Hudson, Erika A. Waters

Summary: This scoping review examined the characteristics of technology-adapted motivational interviewing (TAMI) interventions and found that TAMIs may improve some health promotion and disease management behaviors. However, there is limited design specifically for marginalized sociodemographic groups, and no elements addressing sociocontextual challenges are included. Further research is needed to determine the impact of TAMIs on individual health outcomes, incorporate elements addressing sociocontextual factors, and identify best practices for implementing TAMIs in clinical practice.
