Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association between provider adherence to Tailored Motivational Interviewing implementation strategy and motivational interviewing (MI) competence. Through assessing 156 youth-focused HIV providers, it was found that overall adherence was not associated with overall MI competence. MI competence significantly increased from Baseline to Implementation and Baseline to Sustainment. Some individual implementation strategies were associated with change in competence and the probability of achieving Intermediate/Advanced competence. The results suggest that 100% percent adherence to all TMI implementation strategies may not be necessary.

Summary: This article focuses on provider communication strategies to effectively and equitably promote HPV vaccine uptake among marginalized racial and ethnic groups. It reviews the literature on evidence-based patient-provider HPV vaccine communication techniques and provides specific strategies for improving communication with adolescents of color using source, content, and modality approaches. Effective behavior-change communication adapted for adolescents of color can help reduce disparities in HPV-related morbidity and mortality.

Summary: Obesity is a growing concern among children worldwide, especially among those from diverse and economically disadvantaged households in the U.S. Adolescence obesity increases the risk of negative physical and psychological health outcomes. Mobile-app-based health interventions have shown effectiveness in promoting healthier lifestyles among children. A novel mobile app prototype was developed to engage early adolescents in interactive discussions about healthy eating and active living, and usability testing confirmed its positive reception and effectiveness among participants.

Summary: The short-term use of MI by diabetes physicians managing adolescents with poorly controlled type 1 diabetes was not found to be superior to standard education alone in improving glycemic control. However, improved skills in applying the MI method at outpatient clinics may lead to greater benefits in glycemic control.

Summary: Patients on long-term opioid therapy for chronic pain described generally adverse experiences with opioid tapers. These tapers can lead to significant physical, emotional, and social consequences, often reducing trust and engagement in healthcare. Patient-provider relationships and communication play a crucial role in patients' perceptions of the quality and outcomes of opioid tapers.

Summary: This study investigates the role of patient expectancy and the expectancy violation of patient-centered communication (PCC) in patient satisfaction with online patient-provider communication (OPPC). The study found that patient satisfaction with OPPC was lower than that in offline medical encounters, but increased with the frequency of OPPC usage. The study also found that patients experienced a higher expectancy violation of PCC in OPPC scenarios.

Summary: The World Health Organization has identified vaccine hesitancy as a major global health threat in modern times. To address this issue, training healthcare professionals to deal with hesitant or vaccine-refusing patients is crucial. AIMS (Announce, Inquire, Mirror, and Secure) is a method designed to facilitate more productive conversations and build trust between healthcare providers and patients/caregivers, ultimately leading to higher vaccination rates.

Summary: Delay or refusal of childhood vaccines is common and may be increasing. Pediatricians struggle with how to communicate with parents who resist recommended vaccines. A curriculum has been developed to train pediatric clinicians on a specific vaccine communication strategy, which has been perceived as useful by participants. The training program has the potential for high engagement among pediatric clinicians.

Summary: This scoping review examined the characteristics of technology-adapted motivational interviewing (TAMI) interventions and found that TAMIs may improve some health promotion and disease management behaviors. However, there is limited design specifically for marginalized sociodemographic groups, and no elements addressing sociocontextual challenges are included. Further research is needed to determine the impact of TAMIs on individual health outcomes, incorporate elements addressing sociocontextual factors, and identify best practices for implementing TAMIs in clinical practice.
