The life expectancy of patients with thalassemia has increased markedly in recent years resulting in the aging of the population and the emergence of new comorbidities. The majority of patients with thalassemia have low bone mineral density and experience lifelong fracture rates as high as 71 %. The pathogenesis of thalassemia-associated osteoporosis (TAO) is multifactorial with anemia and iron overload playing crucial role in its development. Data concerning the prevention and treatment of TAO are extremely limited. We performed a literature research in Pubmed and Scopus to identify interventional studies evaluating the effects of various agents on TAO. Seventeen studies were retrieved. We present the results of these studies as well as a brief overview of TAO including presentation, pathogenesis, and management. Most of the studies identified are of poor quality, are not randomized controlled, and include small number of participants. There are no data concerning effects on fracture rates. Bisphosphonates are the most widely studied agents and among them zoledronic acid is the most well studied. Hormone replacement treatment (HRT) shows beneficial but small effects. Denosumab and strontium ranelate have each been evaluated in only a single study, while there are no data about the effects of anabolic agents. Given the increased life expectancy and the increase in fracture rates with age, more data about the management of TAO are warranted. Moreover, due to the need for lifelong management starting at young age, careful treatment plans which may include sequential treatment may often be required. However, currently, there are no relevant data available.

Assessable learning outcomes for the EU Education and Training Framework core and Function A specific modules: Report of an ETPLAS WORKING Group

Ismene A. Dontas, Kenneth Applebee, Martje Fentener van Vlissingen, Viola Galligioni, Katerina Marinou, Kathy Ryder, Johannes Schenkel, Jan-Bas Prins, Anne-Dominique Degryse, David Lewis

Summary: Article 23(2) of the European Union Directive 2010/63/EU requires staff involved in the care and use of animals for scientific purposes to be adequately educated and trained before undertaking any such work. The European Commission developed a common Education and Training Framework to help Member States fulfill their obligations, and an Education & Training Platform for Laboratory Animal Science Working Group was established to further guide the Learning Outcomes and assessment criteria. Adoption of this document will harmonize education and training within the EU and promote mutual recognition of training.

Effect of Calcium and Vitamin D Supplementation With and Without Collagen Peptides on Volumetric and Areal Bone Mineral Density, Bone Geometry and Bone Turnover in Postmenopausal Women With Osteopenia

Kalliopi Lampropoulou-Adamidou, Efthymia Karlafti, Chrysoula Argyrou, Konstantinos Makris, George Trovas, Ismene A. Dontas, Symeon Tournis, Ioannis K. Triantafyllopoulos

Summary: The study demonstrates that supplementation with calcium, vitamin D, and CPs can improve trabecular and cortical bone parameters, prevent a decline in aBMD, and decrease bone turnover in postmenopausal women with osteopenia.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effect of Ceratonia siliqua on bone mineral density (BMD) as a nonpharmaceutical alternative treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis. The results showed that long-term administration of C. siliqua significantly increased BMD compared to the control group and the ovariectomized group after 3 and 6 months of intervention. Therefore, C. siliqua may be considered a non-pharmaceutical alternative treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis.

European Union Legislation for the Welfare of Animals Used for Scientific Purposes: Areas Identified for Further Discussion

Katerina A. Marinou, Ismene A. Dontas

Summary: The Directive 2010/63/EU has been in force for more than a decade, bringing significant improvements and novel requirements for animal welfare and research integrity in scientific experiments. The Directive provides clear provisions for various aspects such as scope, authorization procedures, animal welfare bodies, national committees, cost/benefit analysis, severity classification, retrospective assessment, and statistical reporting. The authors, based on their experience working in this field, have identified indicative areas in existing legislative texts and guidance documents that may impact animal welfare and scientific integrity. They discuss suggested solutions to address these areas through potential future revisions in legislation or other actions to benefit animal welfare, aiming to clarify and simplify these issues for all stakeholders involved.

Rehabilitation Prognostic Factors following Hip Fractures Associated with Patient's Pre-Fracture Mobility and Functional Ability: A Prospective Observation Study

Smaragda Koudouna, Dimitrios S. Evangelopoulos, Michail Sarantis, Efstathios Chronopoulos, Ismene A. Dontas, Spiridon Pneumaticos

Summary: This study aims to evaluate prognostic tools for predicting patient recovery after hip fractures and investigate the correlation between pre-fracture motor and functional statuses. The study included 80 patients with hip fractures and evaluated patient history, previous falls, fracture type, and overall survival. The results showed that patients' physical and functional statuses were correlated with their postoperative recovery.

Site specific differences in vBMD and geometry in postmenopausal women with primary hyperparathyroidism

E. Karlafti, I. Dontas, I. Lambrinoudaki, I. Vlamis, K. Lampropoulou-Adamidou, K. Makris, I. Trifonidi, A. Galanos, G. Trovas, E. Chronopoulos, S. Tournis

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of Primary Hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) on volumetric Bone Mineral Density (vBMD) and bone geometry. The study found that both trabecular and cortical bone were adversely affected in postmenopausal women with PHPT, with greater effects on cortical bone at the radius compared to the tibia, indicating attenuation of deleterious effects on weight-bearing bone.

The Effect of Postoperative Physical Therapy Following Hip Fracture: A Literature Review

Smaragda Koudouna, Dimitrios S. Evangelopoulos, Michail Sarantis, Efstathios Chronopoulos, Ismene A. Dontas, Spiros Pneumaticos

Summary: Hip fractures in the elderly are a growing concern, with post-operative rehabilitation being crucial for improved outcomes. However, there is a lack of evidence-based guidelines for the most effective rehabilitation pathways. This review aims to explore these pathways and provide objective evaluation through pre-operative and post-operative scores.

Tuberculosis of the Spine in a Patient With Kidney Cancer

Irena Karabella, Efstathios Chronopoulos, George Panagiotakopoulos, Ismene A. Dontas

Summary: Tuberculosis is a commonly misdiagnosed infectious disease that can mimic bone tumors or metastatic lesions in the spine. In patients with cancer and signs of lymph node involvement and bone lesions, exploring other potential causes is crucial for diagnosis. This case study highlights the importance of maintaining a high level of suspicion, as a lytic lesion initially misdiagnosed as a metastatic lesion turned out to be renal cell carcinoma.
