Summary: The photochemical reaction of diarylethenes and 2-vinylbiaryls is widely used in organic synthesis, but the issue of selectivity arises when these motifs are combined in one molecule. In this study, the selectivity of the reaction was rationalized by DFT calculations, and highly fluorescent derivatives were obtained.

Summary: We successfully synthesized a series of complex cycloheptatriene-containing azetidine lactones using two key photochemical reactions. Through ultrafast spectroscopy, we provided evidence for electron transfer from free amines in the excited state and characterized the aza-Yang reaction by studying the dependence of initial reaction rates on photon absorption rates. This study lays the foundation for exploring unexplored chemical space and providing a large quantity of new compounds for research purposes.

Summary: This study reports the synthesis of novel imide-functionalized polymers based on diselenophene-pyrrole-2,5-dione and diselenophene-phthalimide, and investigates the effect of fused and nonfused diselenophene units on the properties and device fabrication of the polymers. Results show the potential of these polymers as semiconducting materials in organic field effect transistors.

Summary: A metal- and additive-free photoredox cyclization of N-arylacrylamides for the concise formation of dihydroquinolinones was reported, using sustainable visible light and the organic light-emitting molecule 4CzIPN as the efficient photocatalyst. The reaction system showed exclusive 6-endo-trig cyclization selectivity with generally good yields of functionalized dihydroquinolinones and dihydrobenzoquinolinones, with mechanistical studies supporting the feasibility of 1,3-H shift and intersystem crossing of the diradical intermediate.

Summary: Photochemical and selective synthesis of 1-benzyl-1,2-dihydroisoquinolines was achieved using isoquinolines, methyl chloroformate, and electron-rich benzyltrifluoro-borates, with the presence of pyridine inhibiting the formation of cyclized pavine type products. The benzyl adducts were successfully transformed into berberine type skeletons through carbamate moiety cyclization.

Summary: Since their introduction, Synthetic Control (SC) methods have become leading methods for estimating causal effects in observational studies. This study examines SC methods from a design-based perspective and introduces a Modified Unbiased Synthetic Control (MUSC) estimator that guarantees unbiasedness under random assignment. The results show that SC-type estimators can have lower root mean-squared errors compared to other estimators in settings with real data.

Summary: Recently, there has been significant research interest in photoresponsive materials, and one approach to develop these materials is by incorporating photoisomeric structures into organic ligands of phosphorescent transition metal complexes. In this study, two photoresponsive cyclometalating ligands, HL1 and HL2, were designed and synthesized, and their photoirradiation under argon resulted in photocyclization, hypochromism, and bathochromic shifts in absorption. Furthermore, three photoresponsive iridium(III) complexes cyclometalated with HL1 or HL2 were synthesized, and their photocyclization process was observed to be faster than that of the free ligands, leading to significant luminescence enhancement by about 10-20 folds.

Summary: The study found that skeletal photorearrangement of ortho-halogen-substituted diarylethenes induced by UV light can lead to the formation of bi- or tricyclic frameworks depending on the type of halogen substituent and solvent used. The reaction pathways differ, with bicyclic fused aromatics formed through photocyclization with halogen abstraction, and tricyclic frameworks formed via tandem electrocyclization/sigmatropic shift reactions. Additionally, these compounds can also function as both brominating agents and Lewis acids for catalyzing electrophilic reactions.

Summary: Design flood hydrographs are crucial for hydraulic engineering and flood risk assessment. However, the traditional approach of deriving flood hydrographs from flood frequency analysis does not consider the variation in flood volume and hydrograph shape for the same flood peak due to different meteorological and catchment-specific processes. This study proposes a method to generate type-specific design hydrographs, taking into account the type-specific flood volumes and hydrograph shapes based on certain return periods. An ensemble of synthetic design flood hydrographs is obtained using different probability density functions as templates, allowing for consideration of best- and worst-case scenarios. A case study in Germany demonstrates the applicability of this method.
