Summary: Pregnancy complications have a significant impact on millions of women each year, but there is currently no safe and effective treatment available. Placenta-specific therapy, which targets abnormal placental development using biomolecules and signaling pathways, shows promise as a safe and effective therapeutic strategy. This review provides a detailed explanation of the physiological structure and characteristics of the placenta, as well as the mechanisms of biomolecules and signaling pathways involved in normal and abnormal placental development. It also discusses how these biomolecules can be used as therapeutic targets and explores the potential of nanodelivery systems in placenta-specific therapy.

Summary: This study aims to examine the effectiveness of a Bayes-theorem based preeclampsia risk prediction strategy in reducing the risk of preeclampsia among Chinese women. The study will be a randomized controlled trial conducted in 18 hospitals in China. The risk prediction strategies will be developed through staged processes and data on primary and secondary outcomes will be collected. If positive changes are found, this evidence will support the adoption of the risk prediction model in healthcare services for Chinese pregnant women.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate the seasonal variation in placenta-mediated pregnancy complications. The researchers found a significant seasonal variation in the risk of hypertensive disorders during pregnancy, with the highest risk in pregnancies conceived in the spring and summer season. However, there was no apparent seasonality in other placenta-mediated complications.

Summary: This study compared the adherence after discharge to aspirin or enoxaparin following THA or TKA. The results showed that the rates of non-adherence and the number of missed doses were similar for patients regardless of drug prescribed, and the most common reasons for non-adherence were unrelated to the mode of administration.

Summary: The study found significant alterations in placental SLCO3A1 (OATP3A1) gene expression in patients with intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP), while the expression levels of the other 20 genes were comparable between healthy and ICP placentae. Additionally, certain genes in ICP placentae showed positive correlations with BA concentrations and maternal body mass index.

Summary: The study conducted a systematic review and network meta-analysis, finding that low molecular weight heparin (LMWH), alone or in combination with low-dose aspirin (LDA), was more effective in preventing FGR compared to controls. Evidence for other treatments was inconclusive, with LMWH showing moderate confidence against controls.

Summary: Background: Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) affects about 2% of pregnancies and lacks trial evidence for dietary advice. Methods: A randomized trial was conducted to compare the effects of adding watermelon to the diet after HG hospital discharge. Results: Adding watermelon improved bodyweight, HG symptoms, appetite, wellbeing, and satisfaction compared to control. Conclusion: Adding watermelon to the diet after HG hospital discharge improves various outcomes.

Summary: Low-dose aspirin is commonly used in frozen-embryo transfer (FET) cycles, but the effect of short-term aspirin administration on pregnancy outcomes is unclear. In this retrospective study, we analyzed the outcomes and complications of 4454 programmed FET cycles and found that the short-term use of aspirin did not improve live birth rates or reduce the incidence of pregnancy complications. Based on our findings, short-term administration of low-dose aspirin may not benefit young women undergoing frozen-thawed embryo transfer cycles.

Summary: The prevalence of understated executive dysfunction (UED), assessed using the clock-drawing test (CDT) and the Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB), was investigated in middle-aged adults without cognitive complaints. The study found that more than one third of participants had UED, which was associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome. Screening tests targeting executive functions could be useful for early detection of UED and initiating interventions to improve cognitive performance.

Summary: Autophagy is involved in both normal and pathological pregnancies, but its role in hydatidiform moles (HM) is unclear. This study examined the expression of autophagy markers LC3B and p62 in 36 HM samples and compared them to 19 nonmolar pregnancies. LC3B was found in almost half of the villi and p62 was found in almost all villi. LC3B expression was significantly higher in complete HM compared to partial HM. There were also different expression patterns of LC3B in trophoblast layers. Overall, autophagic markers are present in HM and their expression differs between complete and partial moles.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the relevance of fetal brain MRI in cases of cleft lip and/or palate. The results showed that MRI could detect severe abnormalities in cases of clefts associated with other anomalies, leading to changed prognoses. However, for isolated cleft lip cases, MRI only found minor abnormalities and no postnatal disorders were found in these children.

Summary: In this study, thrombin generation assays were performed on severe COVID-19 patients, and it was found that these assays could not predict the early or late survival rates of the patients, nor were they associated with thrombotic events. However, by detecting the changes in endogenous thrombin potential (ETP), it was possible to predict whether patients would need to be transferred to an intensive care unit in the future.

Summary: This study investigated the relative contributions of occupational and community sources of COVID-19 among healthcare workers in a tertiary medical center in Paris. The findings suggest a higher risk of hospital-acquired infections, especially in geriatric hospitals, and a link between job roles and infection risk. Summary: The management of pregnant women with thrombophilia and gestational vascular complications is still a matter of debate, as current treatment is often based on clinical outcome rather than disease mechanism. Guidelines for venous thromboembolism prophylaxis in pregnancy are inconsistent due to limited evidence. This review critically discusses risk assessment models and management strategies for high-risk pregnant women, emphasizing the importance of an individualized precision medicine approach based on disease mechanism.

Summary: This article reports 20 cases of first venous thromboembolism (VTE) events in women of childbearing age after evidence of intimate partner violence. Most patients did not report the violence at their first consultation and doctors did not suspect it. This situation may be underdiagnosed and calls for systematic evaluation. Screening for intimate partner abuse could have significant consequences regarding the protection of affected women and the assessment of bleeding risk with anticoagulant treatment.
