This study presents a new vision-based deep learning method to monitor and evaluate the structural health of in-service infrastructure. The proposed framework is validated through field experiments and can be potentially used for monitoring the structural health of existing bridges.
This study presents a new vision-based deep learning method to monitor and evaluate the structural health of in-service infrastructure. For this purpose, three different camera placements, including remote, structure-mounted, and drone-mounted cameras, are proposed to capture the vibrations or displacements of bridges. The vision-based deep learning method is verified by an optical flow approach. Various techniques, such as visual data denoising and camera motion removal, are utilized to process the test data for displacement measurements and extract the structural frequencies. Structural models of bridges are analyzed to validate the measurements and assess the structural health of several pedestrian, traffic, and railway bridges without interfering with traffic. Measurements in the field experiments and results from the structural analysis on tested bridges show that the proposed framework works successfully and can be potentially engineered to monitor the structural health of existing bridges.

Structural performance and corrosion resistance of fiber reinforced polymer wrapped steel reinforcing bars

Thomas Less, Aydin Demir, Halil Sezen

Summary: The structural behavior and corrosion resistance of hybrid fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) wrapped steel bars were studied for use in reinforced concrete structures. Laboratory experiments were conducted to assess the axial tensile capacity and corrosion resistance of the composite bars, as well as the flexural behavior of beams reinforced with these hybrid bars. The results showed that FRP-wrapped steel reinforcing bars not only contributed to the strength capacity of the bars but also exhibited high corrosion resistance.

Progressive collapse resistance of low and mid-rise RC mercantile buildings subjected to a column failure

Aydin Demir

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the progressive collapse potential of buildings designed using conventional design codes for the merchant occupancy classification and subjected to a sudden column failure. The results deduced that the mercantile structures designed according to current seismic codes require additional direct design considerations to improve their progressive collapse resistance against the risk of a sudden column loss.
