Metal-Nitrogen-Carbon Cluster-Decorated Titanium Carbide is a Durable and Inexpensive Oxygen Reduction Reaction Electrocatalyst

Sung Beom Cho, Cheng He, Shrihari Sankarasubramanian, Arashdeep Singh Thind, Javier Parrondo, Jordan A. Hachtel, Albina Y. Borisevich, Juan-Carlos Idrobo, Jing Xie, Vijay Ramani, Rohan Mishra

Summary: By optimizing the interaction between nitrogen-coordinated transition metal clusters embedded in a more stable and corrosion-resistant carbide matrix, a new ORR electrocatalyst with enhanced activity and stability compared to traditional Fe-N-C catalysts was developed. A potential electrostatics-based descriptor of catalytic activity was identified during first-principles calculations, showing promise as a tool for designing active and stable PGM-free electrocatalysts.

Oxygen Vacancy Injection as a Pathway to Enhancing Electromechanical Response in Ferroelectrics

Kyle P. Kelley, Anna N. Morozovska, Eugene A. Eliseev, Vinit Sharma, Dundar E. Yilmaz, Adri C. T. van Duin, Panchapakesan Ganesh, Albina Borisevich, Stephen Jesse, Peter Maksymovych, Nina Balke, Sergei Kalinin, Rama K. Vasudevan

Summary: This study reports the first observation of enhanced electromechanical response in BaTiO3 thin films through dynamic local oxygen vacancy control. It demonstrates that piezoelectricity can persist past the bulk Curie temperature and that an internal electric field further enhances the intrinsic electrostriction. The findings highlight the pivotal role that dynamics of vacancies in complex oxides play in determining functional properties and suggest a new route towards achieving enhanced ferroic response in ferroelectrics and other ferroic materials with higher functional temperature windows.

Effects of precipitate size and spacing on deformation-induced fcc to bcc phase transformation

Eva Zarkadoula, Ying Yang, Albina Borisevich, Easo George

Summary: Using molecular dynamics simulations, this study investigates the deformation-induced phase transition in an Fe-Ni alloy with and without precipitates. The results show that larger precipitates and smaller spacings hinder the phase transformation. These findings help interpret the experimental results and analyze the individual effects of precipitate size and spacing.

Conformal LiF Stabilized Interfaces via Electrochemical Fluorination on High Voltage Spinel Cathodes (≈4.9 V) for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Bishnu P. Thapaliya, Albina Y. Borisevich, Harry M. Meyer, Xiao-Guang Sun, Craig A. Bridges, Sheng Dai

Summary: This study reports the formation of a stable LiF interface on LNMO through electrochemical fluorination, improving the cycling stability and capacity of batteries. This excellent electrochemical performance could potentially lead to the development of high energy density batteries with high voltage cathodes.

Sub-10 nm Probing of Ferroelectricity in Heterogeneous Materials by Machine Learning Enabled Contact Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy

Sebastian W. Schmitt, Rama K. Vasudevan, Maurice Seifert, Albina Y. Borisevich, Veeresh Deshpande, Sergei Kalinin, Catherine Dubourdieu

Summary: Reducing the dimensions of ferroelectric materials to the nanoscale affects the polarization pattern and switching ability. By using contact Kelvin probe force microscopy combined with a response clustering algorithm, it is possible to measure ferroelectric response at a mapping resolution of 8 nm. This method allows for mapping complex ferroelectric polarization textures and understanding the polarization pattern changes across phase transitions.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of crystal symmetry mismatch on heterostructures and demonstrates that magnetic properties can be artificially controlled by manipulating the thickness of the SrTiO3 layer. It suggests that crystal symmetry mismatch can also be designed and engineered as an effective strategy to generate functional properties of perovskite oxides.
