This article summarizes the factors influencing beauty and attractiveness with age and introduces minimally invasive injectable procedures for facial beautification and rejuvenation based on different age groups. Different age groups have different signs of aging and aesthetic goals, and a comprehensive understanding of facial aging and patient's aesthetic considerations is essential for effective treatment.
BackgroundSeveral elements, including age, influence judgments of beauty and attractiveness. Aging is affected by intrinsic factors (e.g., genetics, race/ethnicity, anatomical variations) and extrinsic factors (e.g., lifestyle, environment).AimsTo provide a general overview of minimally invasive injectable procedures for facial beautification and rejuvenation to meet the aesthetic goals of patients across their lifespan, organized by decade.MethodsThis case study review describes aesthetic considerations of females in their third to sixth decade of life (i.e., 20-60 years of age or beyond). Each case study reports the treatments, specifically botulinum toxin type A and soft tissue fillers, used to address aesthetic concerns.ResultsSigns of aging, as well as aesthetic goals and motivations, vary by age groups, cultures, and races/ethnicities. However, there are overarching themes that are associated with each decade of life, such as changes in overall facial shape and specific facial regions, which can be used as a starting point for aesthetic treatment planning. Appropriate patient selection, thorough aesthetic evaluation, product knowledge, and injection technique, as well as good physician-patient communication, are essential for optimal treatment outcomes.ConclusionsNonsurgical facial injectable treatments can successfully enhance and rejuvenate facial features across different age ranges. A comprehensive understanding of facial aging and the aesthetic considerations of patients by the decade contributes to optimal treatment planning and maintenance.

Guidance on infection control and plume management with Laser and Energy-Based Devices taking into consideration COVID-19

John R. Sullivan, Marius Rademaker, Greg Goodman, Philip Bekhor, Firas Al-Niaimi

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted medical practices, leading to a need for reassessment of infection control protocols for dermatologic laser and energy-based device treatments. Adherence to high standards of skin preparation, device disinfection, plume and aerosol management, and appropriate PPE can help mitigate inherent treatment risks, particularly in aerosol-generating procedures.

Summary: Based on available literature, aspiration technique does not offer a reliable safety measure for filler injections, and it is safer to utilize injection techniques that avoid vascular injection rather than relying on aspiration.

Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Phase 1/2 Study to Determine the Appropriate ATX-101 Concentration for Reduction of Submental Fat

Greg J. Goodman, Lynda J. Spelman, Nicholas Lowe, Beta Bowen

Summary: ATX-101 showed safety and efficacy in reducing moderate/severe submental fat, with most patients experiencing mild/moderate adverse events during treatment, the highest pain scores were in the ATX-101 1.0% and 2.0% groups, and satisfaction with appearance and patient-assessed global improvement ratings increased in all ATX-101 treatment groups compared to placebo.

Movement of the Syringe During Filler Aspiration: An Ultrasound Study

Frank Lin, Greg J. Goodman, Mark Magnusson, Peter Callan, Stefania Roberts, Sarah Hart, Eqram Rahman, Cara B. McDonald, Steven Liew, Cath Porter, Niamh Corduff, Michael Clague

Summary: This study visualized and measured the movement of the needle tip during aspiration and injection of hyaluronic acid filler in real time. It found that aspiration causes retrograde movement of the needle tip, while injection causes anterograde movement. Double-handed aspiration and greater experience reduce needle tip movement. The study suggests that it is not advisable to rely solely on aspiration to prevent intravascular injection.

Making Sense of Late Tissue Nodules Associated With Hyaluronic Acid Injections

Summary: This study established a consensus panel to investigate the pathogenesis of delayed-onset tissue nodules (DTNs) due to hyaluronic acid (HA) injections. Consensus was reached on 16 out of 20 questions, forming the basis for a classification and treatment guide. The study suggests that DTNs are likely infection initiated with a variable immune response, and attention to practitioner and patient hygiene, as well as early systemic infection treatment, is important.
