Seaweeds have been of special interest as a feed ingredient, supplement, and additive for poultry due to their diverse bioactive compounds. However, their use is limited by their high salt content and anti-nutritional factors. This review discusses the recent updates on the use of seaweed in poultry feeding and explores ways to optimize their usage.
Seaweed is chemically and phytochemically one of the most diverse marine species that has received special interest as a feed ingredient, supplement, and additive for poultry. The abundant biomass production in the tropics and their bio-active compounds profile such as alginate, fucoidan, fucoxanthin, phlorotannin, laminarin, and long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs) possess many biological roles as antioxidant, antimicrobials, and immunomodulatory effects that are beneficial to improve gut health and performance of poultry. However, seaweeds use as a poultry feed ingredient is limited by their high content of salt (NaCl), anti-nutritional factors, indigestible nutrients, and low energy content. High NaCl content in poultry rations can lead to diarrhoea and high mortality. On the other hand, seaweed carbohydrates can inhibit nutrient absorption in the poultry digestive tract. In this review, we discuss the recent updates on the use of seaweed in poultry feeding, the impacts of various processing methods to eliminate antinutritional factors, and future directions of processing technology that need to be developed to optimise the use of seaweeds in poultry. This includes biological, chemical, and physical approaches to reduce seaweed NaCl, optimise bioactive compounds extraction and purification, reduce anti-nutrition content, and decompose seaweed indigestible carbohydrates before being mixed as a poultry feed ingredient. In the production and health aspects of poultry, bioactive constituents extracted from seaweed possess antimicrobial and immunomodulatory effects that have positive associations with the improvement of production performance.

Dietary supplementation with tomato waste to improve performance and egg quality of laying hens: a meta-analysis

U. F. Handayani, A. Sofyan, D. Lestari, M. M. Sholikin, W. Wulandari, M. A. Harahap, H. Herdian, H. Julendra, T. Okselni, M. E. Mahata

Summary: A meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the effects of adding tomato waste to laying hen diets on performance, egg quality, and blood parameters. Twenty-two articles from different scientific databases were selected for analysis using R software and statistical techniques. The results showed that the inclusion of tomato waste significantly increased feed intake and had a quadratic effect on hen-day egg production and egg mass. However, it decreased eggshell strength. Egg yolk color and lycopene content increased significantly. Tomato waste supplementation also affected blood triglyceride and cholesterol levels in a quadratic pattern. Overall, this meta-analysis confirmed the positive effects of tomato waste on laying hen performance and egg quality.

Summary: This study analyzes the effect of clay minerals on broiler growth and health. The meta-analysis of 86 studies reveals that the addition of clay minerals significantly improves growth performance in broiler chickens, especially during the finisher phase. Aluminosilicate proves to be the most beneficial in enhancing the mucosal immunity status of broiler chickens.

Summary: The global demand for sustainable coffee production has led coffee producers to adopt green practices, considering energy and economics as well. Using green fertilizer from coffee pulp biomass can significantly reduce carbon emissions and improve environmental performance. This study demonstrates that applying coffee pulp biomass in coffee cultivation can lead to energy savings, reduced CO2 emissions, and increased economic value-added, making it a recommended practice for sustainable coffee production.

Summary: This meta-analysis examines the effects of different types and forms of selenium intake on the productive and oxidative status of dairy cows. The results suggest that organic selenium, particularly selenium methionine, has a higher transfer rate into milk compared to selenium yeast. This organic selenium intake can improve milk protein and fat-corrected milk, as well as the antioxidant status in the periparturient period of dairy cows.

Summary: In this meta-analysis, rumen-protected lysine (RPL) or lysine + methionine (RPLM) supplementation showed a positive linear relationship with lactational performance in dairy cows, with greater improvement observed during early lactation. Supplementing RPL or RPLM is recommended in deficient-AA diets but not in adequate-AA diets.

Impacts of red clover and sainfoin silages on the performance, nutrient utilization and milk fatty acids profile of ruminants: A meta-analysis

Agung Irawan, Anuraga Jayanegara, Vincent Niderkorn

Summary: Including plants rich in secondary metabolites in grass ensiling has various benefits for ruminants, such as improving productivity, promoting health, and reducing environmental pollution. This meta-analysis examines the inclusion levels of red clover silage (RCS) and sainfoin silage (SS) in the diets of dairy cows and small ruminants. The results show that RCS inclusion had a quadratic effect on neutral detergent fibre digestibility and linearly increased nitrogen intake in dairy cows. The combination of RCS + SS resulted in higher concentrations of conjugated linolenic acid (CLA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) in cow milk and average daily gain (ADG) in small ruminants compared to other diets.

Summary: The study examines the effectiveness of converting pineapple plantation waste into bromelain, xylitol, and ethanol, which have high value-added potential. Various factors, such as enzyme activity, fermentation methods, and purification techniques, were investigated to optimize the conversion processes. Bromelain extraction from pineapple waste was found to be most efficient in the stem, while lignocellulosic waste from the stem contained significant amounts of starch, cellulose, and hemicellulose suitable for ethanol and xylitol fermentation. The semi-simultaneous saccharification and fermentation method was identified as the most promising for ethanol production.
