Summary: Plant-imposed fitness-reducing sanctions against less-beneficial symbionts are crucial for the evolutionary persistence of mutualism in any symbiosis. This paper discusses methods to develop and assess crops with stricter sanctions and suggests measuring the legacy effects of stronger sanctions on future crops.

Summary: Affective Dependence is a problematic love relationship model that is increasingly prevalent in couple relationships. There are proposed treatment plans, including pharmaceuticals and various individual and group therapies. However, there is a lack of clinical trials to verify the efficacy of these treatments.

Summary: Cardiovascular diseases are the leading causes of hospitalization, death, and disability in Europe, resulting in significant social and economic costs. Recent studies have suggested a potential link between the human microbiota, particularly those in the digestive system, and the development of cardiovascular diseases through their impact on metabolic homeostasis and immune processes.

Summary: Prokaryotes have been shaping the Earth's surface for billions of years through biomineralization, but the functions and adaptive roles of this process have been less investigated. This paper discusses the biomineral functions of various prokaryotic systems and proposes a roadmap for studying microbial biomineralization from an adaptive perspective. It also explores emerging questions about the potential roles of biomineralization in microbial cooperation and biofilm architectures.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between regular and extreme mountaineering, behavioral addiction, and psychiatric disorders through a web-based questionnaire survey. The results showed that symptoms of mountaineering addiction were associated with perceived stress, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, alcohol and drug abuse, and psychiatric disorders. Mountaineering addiction was also correlated with higher levels of sensation-seeking, emotion regulation, agency, and risk-taking.

Summary: The aim of this article is to explore the multiple causes of drug use. The study examines the prevalence and attitudes towards drug use, as well as the influences and risk factors that contribute to illicit drug use. By understanding the complex interplay of individual, genetic, cultural, and socio-economic components, this research can aid in the development of comprehensive and tailored intervention plans to support recovery.

Summary: Despite gaming disorder being recognized as a new mental disorder, little is known about the specific reasons why people seek treatment for their videogame play. This study aimed to investigate the treatment-seeking reasons among adult players who sought help from a Finnish treatment program. The qualitative analysis identified five main themes: social reasons, existential reasons, practical reasons, self-perceived addiction, and wish for support. The study also revealed that adults seek treatment for various gaming-related problems, not limited to those described in the current diagnosis of gaming disorder.

Summary: This study analyzed the causes and consequences of modern teaching strategies in Spanish secondary schools, using the PISA 2018 database. The results showed that the likelihood of using modern teaching style is influenced by factors such as whether teachers work for state schools and whether they usually use traditional strategies. The study also found that modern teaching style has a negative impact on students' academic performance, but contributes to improving their well-being, motivation, cooperation, and reducing bullying.

Summary: To persist and compete with other plasmids, some plasmids have developed post-segregational killing systems, which can kill a daughter cell if the plasmid has not been passed on. However, the coexistence of plasmids with and without these killing systems is more common than previously thought, especially when there is spatial structure and plasmids provide benefits to the hosts.

Summary: Despite the potential benefits of albumin, they do not consistently translate into clinically important outcomes in clinical trials. This may be due to leakage of albumin, modification of its pleiotropic properties, replacement by other plasma proteins, and possible adverse effects.

Summary: Diagnoses of HIV among people who inject drugs have increased in the U.S. for the first time in 2 decades, with multiple HIV outbreaks detected since 2015. Syringe services programs are cost effective and highly effective in reducing HIV transmission but have limited geographic coverage. Combining syringe services programs with medications for substance use disorder and antiretroviral therapy can maximize their impact in HIV prevention.

Summary: This study examined the relationships between PCOS status, food addiction (FA), and hormonal birth control use. The results showed that individuals with PCOS were more likely to meet the diagnostic criteria for FA compared to those without PCOS. Both PCOS status and hormonal birth control use were independently associated with higher FA symptom count scores.
