Decreased thalamic monoamine availability in drug-induced parkinsonism

Yoon-Sang Oh, Sang-Won Yoo, Chul Hyoung Lyoo, Joong-Seok Kim

Summary: Drug-induced parkinsonism (DIP) is a major cause of misdiagnosis of Parkinson's disease (PD) and is characterized by a dopamine receptor blockade. This study found that monoamine availability in the thalamus was lower in DIP patients compared to healthy controls and similar to that of early PD patients, suggesting that this could be an imaging biomarker of DIP.

Annual Trends in the Incidence and Prevalence of Alzheimer's Disease in South Korea: A Nationwide Cohort Study

Min Seok Baek, Han-Kyeol Kim, Kyungdo Han, Hyuk-Sung Kwon, Han Kyu Na, Chul Hyoung Lyoo, Hanna Cho

Summary: This study investigated the incidence and prevalence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in Korea, utilizing data from the National Health Insurance System. It found a gradual increase in AD among the Korean population aged 40 years and older, with the highest increase observed in older age groups. Interestingly, individuals with hypertension or dyslipidemia were found to have lower prevalence of AD in recent years. Efforts toward early diagnosis and modification of underlying risks may be key in reducing the socioeconomic burden of AD.

Associations between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and cognitive impairment and the effect modification of inflammation

Sunghyuk Kang, Eosu Kim, Hanna Cho, Dae Jung Kim, Hyeon Chang Kim, Sun Jae Jung

Summary: This study found an association between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and cognitive impairment, with this association being stronger in women with higher inflammatory status.

Dynamic network model reveals distinct tau spreading patterns in early- and late-onset Alzheimer disease

Wha Jin Lee, Hanna Cho, Min Seok Baek, Han-Kyeol Kim, Jae Hoon Lee, Young Hoon Ryu, Chul Hyoung Lyoo, Joon-Kyung Seong

Summary: This study describes the differences in tau-spreading processes in early- and late-onset Alzheimer's disease spectrum. The results suggest that the tau propagation pathways are distinct between individuals with early and late onset of symptoms, with specific hub regions playing a dominant role in tau spreading.

Role of Enlarged Perivascular Space in the Temporal Lobe in Cerebral Amyloidosis

Han Kyu Na, Han-Kyeol Kim, Hye Sun Lee, Mina Park, Jae Hoon Lee, Young Hoon Ryu, Hanna Cho, Chul Hyoung Lyoo

Summary: By studying 272 participants with MRI and PET scans, we found that a high degree of temporal lobe perivascular space (EPVS) is associated with a higher likelihood of amyloid positivity in patients with Alzheimer's disease. This finding suggests that impaired perivascular drainage may be related to cerebral amyloidosis.

Na, Sang Won Seo, Carlos Cruchaga, Hee Jin Kim, Hong-Hee Won

Summary: This cohort study evaluated the transferability of a polygenic risk score (PRS) for Alzheimer's disease (AD) in the Korean population, using summary statistics from a prior genome-wide association study (GWAS) of European populations. The study found that the PRS derived from the European GWAS can identify individuals at a high risk for AD dementia in the Korean population, highlighting the importance of transancestry transferability and diversifying genetic studies of AD.

Nigrosome 1 visibility and its association with nigrostriatal dopaminergic loss in Parkinson's disease

Han-Kyeol Kim, Tae Won Kim, Min Seok Baek, Eung Yeop Kim, Young Hee Sung, Jae Hoon Lee, Young Hoon Ryu, Sung Jun Ahn, Han Soo Yoo, Chul Hyoung Lyoo

Summary: In this study, the visibility of NG1 in SMwI was found to be associated with the degree of nigrostriatal degeneration in PD patients. It was concluded that SMwI can be used for diagnosing PD only after the onset of motor symptoms.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Striatal Dopamine Availability in Parkinson's Disease

Yoon-Sang Oh, Joong-Seok Kim, Chul Hyoung Lyoo, Hosung Kim

Summary: This study found that Parkinson's disease patients with obstructive sleep apnea had significantly lower dopamine availability in the caudate nucleus compared to those without obstructive sleep apnea. This association was more pronounced in female patients. However, there was no difference in dopamine availability in other structures (putamen, globus pallidus, thalamus) between the two groups.

Cardiac sympathetic morbidity might reflect the neurobiology of early Parkinson's disease

Sang-Won Yoo, Yoon-Sang Oh, Dong-Woo Ryu, Seunggyun Ha, Chul Hyoung Lyoo, Yuna Kim, Ji-Yeon Yoo, Joong-Seok Kim

Summary: This study aimed to explore subtypes of early Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with cardiac sympathetic denervation and their characteristics. The results showed an association between cardiac denervation subtypes and presynaptic dopamine transporter densities in PD patients. The study also observed an association between cardiac catecholamine capacity and cognition in PD patients.

Exploring the link between essential tremor and Parkinson's disease

Sang-Won Yoo, Seunggyun Ha, Chul Hyoung Lyoo, Yuna Kim, Ji-Yeon Yoo, Joong-Seok Kim

Summary: This study explores the interaction between essential tremor (ET) and Parkinson's disease (PD), finding that patients with PD preceded by ET may exhibit different characteristics from those with pure ET or PD. Patients with PD preceded by ET show typical striatal pathology, but with a delay in noradrenergic impairment. ET patients have similar patterns of presynaptic dopamine transporter deficits as PD patients.

Prediction of Microsatellite Instability in Colorectal Cancer Using a Machine Learning Model Based on PET/CT Radiomics

Soyoung Kim, Jae-Hoon Lee, Eun Jung Park, Hye Sun Lee, Seung Hyuk Baik, Tae Joo Jeon, Kang Young Lee, Young Hoon Ryu, Jeonghyun Kang

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of using preoperative 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/ computed tomography (CT) radiomics with machine learning to predict microsatellite instability (MSI) status in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. A predictive model incorporating PET radiomic features, called rad_score, was established and evaluated for its ability to predict MSI status. The rad_score showed similar predictive performance in both the training and test sets, and it was found to be an independent predictor of MSI status in CRC. Furthermore, the rad_score outperformed conventional PET parameters in predicting MSI status.
