Summary: This study in Ethiopia assessed the prevalence and risk factors of STIs among pregnant women, finding that many patients were asymptomatic. The results indicated that unmarried women, women under 25 years old, those with vaginal discharge, and those experiencing pain during urination were more likely to acquire curable STIs.

Summary: This study compared the exposure of female partners to male gonococcal burdens in infected versus uninfected partners. The findings showed that gonococcal infections in women were more frequent when their partners had higher burdens of infection. Additionally, co-infection with Chlamydia was also associated with increased gonococcal burdens in women.

Summary: Through comparing clinician triple samples and self-taken pooled samples, it was found that self-taken pooled samples have similar sensitivity to clinician triple samples in identifying Neisseria gonorrhoeae in men who have sex with men and females, but have a slight difference in identifying Chlamydia trachomatis infections. Extragenital sampling can be achieved at no additional diagnostic cost to first-catch urine and vulvovaginal swabs.

Summary: Sexual behavior and gender identity can impact the detection of Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections at specific anatomic testing sites. Guidelines for testing should take into account sexual behavior and gender identity.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the presence of Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Mycoplasma genitalium in urogenital samples collected from Turkish patients with various urogenital symptoms. The results showed that C. trachomatis was the most frequently detected bacterial cause of STDs in the hospital, and co-infections should not be underestimated.

Summary: An algorithm that bridges the gap between syndromic STI management and treatment based on realistic diagnostic options and local epidemiology is urgently needed in Africa. The study developed and validated a risk algorithm for NG and CT diagnosis among symptomatic Rwandan women, showing that the algorithm outperformed the current Rwandan National Criteria for NG/CT diagnosis.

Summary: Italy lacks clear legislation on prophylaxis for ophthalmia neonatorum, leading to variations in the use of prophylactic measures. A retrospective survey of birth centers in Italy shows that a majority of neonates received ophthalmic prophylaxis, but only a small percentage received the drugs recommended by the WHO. Incidence of neonatal conjunctivitis due to Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae was found to be low in Italy.

Summary: This study assessed the effectiveness, safety, and associated factors of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among a real-life cohort of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) users in Northwest Spain. The results showed that FTC/TDF was effective, safe, and tolerable in this population, but a high number of STIs were diagnosed, especially among patients engaging in chemsex.

Summary: In this study, the safety and efficacy of two treatment regimens for co-infection of gonorrhea and chlamydia were compared. The results showed that ceftriaxone plus doxycycline was superior to cefixime plus doxycycline in treating the co-infection. The safety profiles of the two regimens were similar.
