We analyse the demographics of black holes (BHs) in the large-volume cosmological hydrodynamical simulation Horizon-AGN. This simulation statistically models how much gas is accreted on to BHs, traces the energy deposited into their environment and, consequently, the back-reaction of the ambient medium on BH growth. The synthetic BHs reproduce a variety of observational constraints such as the redshift evolution of the BH mass density and the mass function. Strong self-regulation via AGN feedback, weak supernova feedback, and unresolved internal processes result in a tight BH-galaxy mass correlation. Starting at z similar to 2, tidal stripping creates a small population of BHs over-massive with respect to the halo. The fraction of galaxies hosting a central BH or an AGN increases with stellar mass. The AGN fraction agrees better with multi-wavelength studies, than single-wavelength ones, unless obscuration is taken into account. The most massive haloes present BH multiplicity, with additional BHs gained by ongoing or past mergers. In some cases, both a central and an off-centre AGN shine concurrently, producing a dual AGN. This dual AGN population dwindles with decreasing redshift, as found in observations. Specific accretion rate and Eddington ratio distributions are in good agreement with observational estimates. The BH population is dominated in turn by fast, slow, and very slow accretors, with transitions occurring at = 3 and z = 2, respectively.

Star-Gas Misalignment in Galaxies. II. Origins Found from the Horizon-AGN Simulation

Donghyeon J. Khim, Sukyoung K. Yi, Christophe Pichon, Yohan Dubois, Julien Devriendt, Hoseung Choi, Julia J. Bryant, Scott M. Croom

Summary: This study investigates the origins of star-gas misalignment in galaxies using the Horizon-AGN simulation, identifying four main formation channels and quantifying their contributions. It reveals that gas, rather than stars, is more vulnerable to dynamical disturbances, leading to misalignment formation mainly due to changes in the rotational axis of the gas. The study also shows a strong anticorrelation between the decay timescale of misalignment and kinematic morphology, with misalignment having a longer lifetime in denser regions due to environmental impacts. Additionally, there is a substantial difference in misalignment lifetime based on origin, related to the initial position angle offset and physical properties of galaxies.

Simulating Jellyfish Galaxies: A Case Study for a Gas-rich Dwarf Galaxy

Jaehyun Lee, Taysun Kimm, Jeremy Blaizot, Harley Katz, Wonki Lee, Yun-Kyeong Sheen, Julien Devriendt, Adrianne Slyz

Summary: The formation of jellyfish galaxies is investigated using radiation-hydrodynamic simulations. The study finds that the interstellar medium (ISM) stripped by ram pressure is the main source of molecular clumps in the near wake region, while in situ formation is dominant in the distant tail. The results suggest that jellyfish features emerge when the ISM mixes with the intracluster medium (ICM) and enhances cooling in the tail.

Impact of Radiation Feedback on the Formation of Globular Cluster Candidates during Cloud-Cloud Collisions

Daniel Han, Taysun Kimm, Harley Katz, Julien Devriendt, Adrianne Slyz

Summary: Through simulating a head-on collision between two turbulent giant molecular clouds, we find that radiation feedback plays a significant role in the formation of globular clusters. Photoionization is the main feedback process that suppresses gas collapse, becoming efficient once a sufficient number of stars are formed. The mass of the cluster increases by about a factor of two, with the difference being more pronounced when extreme Lyα feedback is considered.

Seyoung Jeon, Sukyoung K. Yi, Yohan Dubois, Aeree Chung, Julien Devriendt, San Han, Ryan A. Jackson, Taysun Kimm, Christophe Pichon, Jinsu Rhee

Summary: Cluster galaxies have lower star formation rates than field galaxies, and this study shows that the e-folding timescales of star formation decay are smaller for massive galaxies regardless of their environment. However, low-mass galaxies exhibit more prominent environmental dependence. The study also finds that the transition epoch of cluster galaxies becoming less star-forming than field galaxies varies according to their stellar and host-cluster halo masses.
