Porphyrins as Catalysts in Scalable Organic Reactions

Catalysis is a topic of continuous interest since it was discovered in chemistry centuries ago. Aiming at the advance of reactions for efficient processes, a number of approaches have been developed over the last 180 years, and more recently, porphyrins occupy an important role in this field. Porphyrins and metalloporphyrins are fascinating compounds which are involved in a number of synthetic transformations of great interest for industry and academy. The aim of this review is to cover the most recent progress in reactions catalysed by porphyrins in scalable procedures, thus presenting the state of the art in reactions of epoxidation, sulfoxidation, oxidation of alcohols to carbonyl compounds and C-H functionalization. In addition, the use of porphyrins as photocatalysts in continuous flow processes is covered.

Cytotoxicity of structurally-modified chlorins aimed for photodynamic therapy applications

Summary: Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a promising treatment that uses photosensitizers to generate reactive oxygen species and induce cell death. This study evaluated the photoactivity of four chlorins in tumor and non-tumor cell lines, and found that certain chlorins exhibited high selectivity and phototoxicity in tumor cells, suggesting their potential for clinical cancer treatment.

Terahertz passive amplification via the temporal Talbot effect in metamaterial-based Bragg fibers

Summary: A fully passive terahertz pulse amplification device based on the temporal Talbot effect on a highly dispersive silicon-based metamaterial Bragg fiber is proposed. Three different strategies are explored to maximize the passive gain, and different pulse shapes and gain factors are investigated. Numerical simulation results demonstrate the potential of these approaches for further developments in high gain passive amplification THz devices.

Formulations of curcumin and d-mannitol as a photolarvicide against Aedes aegypti larvae: Sublethal photolarvicidal action, toxicity, residual evaluation, and small-scale field trial*

Summary: This study aimed to synthesize and evaluate different formulations of plant-based larvicides for the photoinactivation of Aedes aegypti larvae. The formulation CCD 3 showed the best efficacy, with the shortest internalization time and longest elimination time, and exhibited rapid degradation under light. In a field trial, CCD 3 had a residual time of 14 days and did not lead to abnormal microbial growth. Furthermore, CCD 3 was found to be non-toxic in Zebrafish.

Cellulose as a polyol in the synthesis of bio-based polyurethanes with simultaneous film formation

Efficacy of Combined Use of Everolimus and Second-Generation Pan-EGRF Inhibitors in KRAS Mutant Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Cell Lines

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy of pan-EGFR inhibitors in KRAS mutant NSCLC cell lines. The results showed that allitinib was more effective than afatinib in NSCLC cell lines. KRAS mutations increased aggressive behavior and affected cell function through upregulation of the focal adhesion-PI3K-Akt-mTOR signaling. Everolimus could restore sensitivity to EGFR inhibitors in KRAS mutant NSCLC cell lines.

Discrimination of cancerous from benign pigmented skin lesions based on multispectral autofluorescence lifetime imaging dermoscopy and machine learning

Efficacy of the combination of P5 peptide and photodynamic therapy mediated by bixin and chlorin-e6 against Cutibacterium acnes biofilm

Alternative Functionalization of Hydrogen-Bonded Diketopyrrolopyrrole Derivatives

Summary: DPP derivatives with thiophene capping rings are widely used as semiconductors in organic electronics, and their optoelectronic properties can be adjusted through different strategies. Incorporating hydrogen-bonding units into DPPs has been shown to improve the performance and morphology of organic solar cells. Modifying the thiophene capping units with hydrogen-bonding groups is a challenging synthetic task, but can yield exciting results.

AI-driven discrimination of benign from malignant pigmented skin lesions based on multispectral autofluorescence lifetime dermoscopy imaging

Laser and vacuum therapy for treatment of facial nerve palsies

Summary: This study used low-level laser therapy (LLLT) to recover facial nerve palsies, including Bell's Palsy (BP) and trauma-induced paralysis. The results showed that LLLT can promote nerve regeneration, and the combination of laser therapy and vacuum therapy can accelerate facial expression recovery.

Advanced methylene blue - nanoemulsions for in vitro photodynamic therapy on oral and cervical human carcinoma

Summary: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) combined with nanoparticles has shown promising results in the treatment of cancer. In this study, nanoemulsions containing a photosensitizer were developed and characterized. The results showed that the nanomaterials had appropriate physical-chemical characteristics, stable properties, and high biocompatibility. In vitro experiments demonstrated the photodynamic activity of the formulation and its potential for cancer treatment.
