Summary: Failure to thrive with profound hypotonia and multiple electrolyte derangements presents a challenging diagnostic dilemma. Initial management focuses on stabilizing the patient and correcting life-threatening electrolyte imbalances. Diagnostic workup, including thorough history and physical examination, ruled out several potential diagnoses before pseudohypoaldosteronism was confirmed through laboratory abnormalities. With appropriate treatment, the patient experienced resolution of laboratory anomalies and improvement in growth and tone.

Summary: Laboratory and clinical studies have shown the significance of gut microbiota in severe pediatric pathological conditions like severe acute malnutrition (SAM), but its role in milder conditions like failure to thrive (FTT) remains poorly understood.

Summary: Research shows that at 3 months old, infants can associate visual shapes with new syllables formed with consonants and vowels. This systematic pairing suggests that phonemes are natural categories for infants and that phonetic representations can be accessed through internal operations outside the linguistic system.

Summary: This study conducted in central South China identified four dietary patterns among infants aged 6-23months, including a diversified diet, a traditional diet, mainly breast milk, and multi-nutrient powders. The prevalence of anaemia in infants decreased from 29.49% in 2015 to 20.26% in 2018. Infants fed a diversified diet or multi-nutrient powders had a reduced risk of anaemia, while those mainly fed breast milk had a higher risk.

Summary: Cerebral asymmetry is an important feature of functional organization in the human brain and has been found to emerge in early infancy. The study revealed leftward asymmetries in local and global network efficiency in infants aged 3-6 months and 6-9 months, demonstrating the developmental progression of functional network asymmetries. The findings suggest that functional asymmetric organization in early infancy lays a critical foundation for later brain functions.

Summary: The study examined early developmental milestones in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and found that low muscle tone may be a reliable early marker for early diagnosis. In the presence of hypotonia, the age of ASD diagnosis was significantly lower, especially in children born at term.

Summary: This article presents a case of a five-month-old female with oropharyngeal teratoma, which caused failure to thrive, feeding difficulties, and severe obstructive sleep apnea. The patient had a severe stridor, a palatal mass obstructing the left oropharynx, and biopsies confirmed the teratoma diagnosis. This case highlights the importance of a thorough head and neck exam, including flexible laryngoscopy, in evaluating infants with airway obstruction and considering oropharyngeal masses in the differential diagnosis.

Summary: The study found that 7-month-old infants show greater sensorimotor activation when observing happy facial expressions, with a significant right-lateralized activation observed for happy expressions compared to angry faces in the dynamic condition. Dynamic emotional faces were processed more efficiently by functional brain networks, showing higher global efficiency and lower networks' diameter compared to static faces.

Summary: This study investigated the neural underpinnings of processing facial emotions across changes in facial identity in 5- and 7-month-old infants. Using fNIRS, eye-tracking, and heart rate measures, researchers found significant neural activation to happy, fearful, and angry faces in different brain regions, with longer looking behavior towards angry faces. There were no differences in neural activations or looking behavior between the two age groups, suggesting developmental stability in responses to emotional facial expressions.

Summary: This case report describes an 8-month-old female Main Coon cat with recurrent behavioral changes and anorexia. The cat deteriorated rapidly, presenting with stupor and coma, and was euthanized. Post-mortem examination revealed a solid grayish mass in the infratentorial region. Histological and immunohistochemical findings were consistent with an Embryonal Tumor with Abundant Neuropil and True Rosettes (ETANTR). Juvenile embryonal tumors should be considered in the differential diagnosis of central nervous system disorders in young cats.
