Solid organ transplantation from COVID positive donors in the United States: Analysis of United Network for Organ Sharing database

Abhay Dhand, Kenji Okumura, Christopher Nabors, Seigo Nishida

Summary: This study analyzed the utilization of organs from donors with COVID-19 and their short-term outcomes using the UNOS database. The results showed that the short-term outcomes of non-lung solid organ transplantation from COVID+ donors were similar to those from COVID- donors, indicating that a positive COVID test should not preclude consideration of these donors for transplantation.

Outcomes of Combined Heart and Kidney Transplantation Under the New Heart Allocation Policy: A United Organ Network for Organ Sharing Database Analysis

Suguru Ohira, Kenji Okumura, Stephen Pan, Abhay Dhand, Elliot Levine, Corazon B. De La Pena, Seigo Nishida, David Spielvogel, Masashi Kai

Summary: The new heart allocation policy is associated with decreased overall survival and increased heart and kidney graft failure in combined heart and kidney transplantation recipients.

1-Year Outcomes of Lung Transplantation for Coronavirus Disease 2019-Associated End-Stage Lung Disease in the United States

Kenji Okumura, Soma Jyothula, Thomas Kaleekal, Abhay Dhand

Summary: The characteristics and outcomes of lung transplant recipients with COVID-19-associated end-stage lung disease were analyzed. The study found that COVID-19 patients had longer hospital stays after transplant, but one-year patient survival was similar to non-COVID-19 recipients. However, COVID-19 remained one of the most common causes of death during the immediate post-transplant period.

Non-operative management of cirrhotic patients with acute calculous cholecystitis: How effective is it?

Kamil Hanna, Bardiya Zangbar, Jordan Kirsch, Matthew Bronstein, Kenji Okumura, Shekhar Gogna, Ilya Shnaydman, Kartik Prabhakaran, Jorge Con

Summary: This study compared the outcomes of cholecystectomy and nonoperative management in cirrhotic patients with acute calculous cholecystitis. The results showed a higher failure rate of nonoperative management, longer length of stay, and higher mortality in these patients.

Groin wound management after decannulation of veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in heart transplantation: Role of sartorius muscle flap

Ameesh Isath, Vasiliki Gregory, Suguru Ohira, Avi Levine, Abhay Dhand, Igor Laskowski, Romeo Mateo, Sateesh Babu, David Spielvogel, Masashi Kai

Summary: The management of groin complications in heart transplant recipients after perioperative femoral VA-ECMO is uncertain. Sartorius muscle flaps (SMF) may be a useful tool to prevent infection progression and improve local healing.

Utilization of hepatitis C virus infected donors in heart transplant recipients with elevated MELD-XI score

Rahim Hirani, Kenji Okumura, Ameesh Isath, Vasiliki Gregory, Shazli Khan, Abhay Dhand, Gregg M. Lanier, David Spielvogel, Masashi Kai, Suguru Ohira

Summary: The outcomes of heart transplantation using HCV+ (hepatitis C virus positive) donor organs in recipients with underlying liver disease are unclear. Comparison between recipients with elevated MELD-XI scores (excluding international normalized ratio) who received heart transplantations from HCV+ donors and HCV-negative donors showed that utilization of HCV+ hearts did not increase the risk of adverse outcomes.

The effects of acuity circle policy on racial disparity in liver transplantation

Kenji Okumura, Abhay Dhand, Ryosuke Misawa, Hiroshi Sogawa, Gregory Veillette, Seigo Nishida

Summary: This study assessed the impact of the acuity circle policy on racial disparities in liver transplantation and found that it did not alter waitlist mortality or improve post-transplant outcomes for Black recipients.
