Summary: Grit is passion and perseverance for a long-term goal, while resilience is the ability to recover or adjust to misfortune or change. The two concepts are intertwined. Surgery residents have higher average grit scores and increased grit levels predict success and satisfaction in surgery residency. Decreased grit levels correlate with burnout, attrition, and suicidality in residents. Personal grittiness can be increased through focused interest, deliberate practice, finding a calling, and cultivating hope and resilience. Grit and resilience are important in residency training and can be nurtured over time. Training programs should promote a wise environment with demanding and supportive departments. Organizational grit can be boosted by maximizing successful attributes of dynamic organizations.

Summary: In the 1890s, scandals involving mistreatment of patients and nurses in Britain and New Zealand led to demands for popular control of hospitals. These scandals were sparked by newspaper agitation but fanned by feminists, socialists, trade unionists, and animal-rights organizations.
