The Courel Mountains Geopark, located in Galicia, Spain, covers an area of 578.29 km2. It is characterized by parallel valleys and ridges, with the highest point reaching 1,641 m. The dominant lithology is slate, quartzite, and limestone, with fractures caused by tectonic activities. The park showcases a variety of landforms and deposits of different origins.
The Courel Mountains Geopark is in Galicia, Northwest Spain. Its total area is 578.29 km2. Parallel valleys and ridges characterize its relief from North to South. Their maximum altitude reaches 1,641 m. Their lithology is dominated by slates, quartzites, and limestones, together with small diabase outcrops. Materials are intensely fractured due to the tectonic dynamics that started during the Cenozoic, and sedimentary formations accumulated in response to environmental changes during the Pleistocene are abundant. As a result, a wide variety of structural landforms are present, along with a wide range of landforms and deposits of alluvial, fluvial, glacial, and periglacial origin. All of them have been mapped to enable sustainable use and management aimed at improving the livelihood of the inhabitants of the geopark area, which has suffered depopulation in recent decades.

Tracking clast mobility using RFID sensors on a boulder beach in Galicia, NW Spain

Alejandro Gomez-Pazo, Augusto Perez-Alberti, Alan Trenhaile

Summary: The study used RFID sensors to track the long-term trajectories of boulders in the Oia area, finding significant variability in their displacement. Despite an increase in storm frequency and intensity, the distance of travel for boulders tended to decrease during the study period.

Natural and Anthropogenic Variations in the Large Shifting Dune in the Corrubedo Natural Park, NW Iberian Peninsula (1956-2017)

Augusto Perez-Alberti, Alejandro Gomez-Pazo, X. L. Otero

Summary: This study analyzed the evolution of a large shifting dune in the Corrubedo Natural Park using aerial images, orthophotographs, topographic surveys, and LiDAR data. The results showed that the dune front experienced two different phases, closely related to anthropic influence, highlighting the need for detailed studies and management to prevent future damage. Based on these analyses, a strategy to improve coastal and environmental management in the Corrubedo Natural Park could be designed.

Tracking the behavior of rocky coastal cliffs in northwestern Spain

Alejandro Gomez-Pazo, Augusto Perez-Alberti, Alan Trenhaile

Summary: The study uses high-resolution images from drones and Structure-from-Motion photogrammetric techniques, along with orthophotos and aerial LiDAR, to examine changes in rocky coastal cliffs in northwestern Galicia, Spain, from 2002 to 2018. The data suggest that cliff recession rates are increasing in the region, and the coast's plan shape is continuing to evolve, with most coastal landslides helping to transport and dispose of talus fallen from the cliffs.

Open Digital Shoreline Analysis System: ODSAS v1.0

Alejandro Gomez-Pazo, Andres Payo, Maria Victoria Paz-Delgado, Miguel A. Delgadillo-Calzadilla

Summary: In this study, a new baseline and transect method called Open-Source Digital Shoreline Analysis System (ODSAS) is proposed for dealing with irregular coastlines. ODSAS differentiates from other methods by combining raster and vector objects to determine the starting points and orientation of transects. The results obtained from ODSAS are compared with those obtained using the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS), showing similar values of coastline changes at the aggregated level but differences at the transect-by-transect level. The study emphasizes the importance of user-defined minimum resolution to reduce subjectivity in the method.

Shoreline Change from Optical and Sar Satellite Imagery at Macro-Tidal Estuarine, Cliffed Open-Coast and Gravel Pocket-Beach Environments

Summary: This study assesses the use of satellite imagery to map and monitor coastal change over time. The findings suggest that satellite derived shorelines may have some discrepancies compared to ground truth data, and that SAR data from descending orbits can capture beach rotation.

Glaciers Landscapes during the Pleistocene in Trevinca Massif (Northwest Iberian Peninsula)

Augusto Perez-Alberti, Alejandro Gomez-Pazo

Summary: The Trevinca Massif, located in the northwestern Iberian Peninsula, has a highest elevation of 2124 m at the Trevinca peak. During the Pleistocene, it experienced extensive glacial activity, with glacier tongues reaching up to 30 km in the Bibei valley and ice thickness exceeding 500 m in some areas. Using high-resolution orthophotography and digital elevation models, paleoglaciers were reconstructed and their ice cover estimated. Four groups of moraines were identified, representing different climatic phases.
