Radiation safety education and practices are crucial in urology, but there is a lack of standardization and knowledge in this area. Studies highlight the need for increased awareness and training in radiation safety.
Introduction: Radiation safety education is important as fluoroscopy is commonly used for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Exposure to high levels of ionizing radiation is associated with an increased risk of cancer and other adverse health effects; therefore, it is essential that urologists and trainees are educated on the safe use of radiation. Unfortunately, radiation education and occupational safety is not standardized for this group and there are currently no review studies examining radiation safety for urologists in the clinical setting. This review aims at investigating the various levels of radiation safety education and practices used in urology. Methods: MEDLINE and EMBASE databases were searched for relevant publications reporting on radiation knowledge and randomized controlled trials, non-randomized comparative studies, and observational studies were included. Reviews, abstracts, editorial comments, non-urologic studies, and incomplete articles were excluded. Results: Within these articles, there were 16 observational studies. Frequency of radiation exposure ranged from <1 x to >15 x /week. There were higher rates of adherence to use of lead aprons and thyroid shields than lead eyeglasses and gloves. Radiation safety education was infrequent. Radiation safety knowledge was especially low for the risks of radiation exposure. Most studies highlight the need for increased awareness and training on radiation safety for both urology trainees and consultants. Conclusions: Radiation safety education and practices are an important issue in urology. Improvements to education and compliance to radiation safety practices are critical to ensuring urologists and trainees use ionizing radiation in a safe and responsible manner.

Short-Term Efficacy and Safety of Open Conjunctiva Ab Externo XEN45 Gel Stent Implantation in Glaucoma Patients

Mitchell D. Thatcher, Dustin J. Coupal, Yanzhao Cheng, Dominik W. Podbielski

Summary: The open conjunctiva ab externo approach to XEN45 implantation is a safe and effective method for reducing intraocular pressure and minimizing the need for glaucoma medications. It has achieved a significant level of success in the management of glaucoma patients.

X-ray therapy safety and awareness education for medical trainees and attending physicians

Mckinley Smith, Emma Yanko, Melissa Huynh, Garson Chan

Summary: This study aimed to assess the level of radiation safety knowledge and training among medical trainees and attending physicians. Medical students had a lower rate (41.9%) of receiving radiation safety training compared to attending physicians (14.9%). Attending physicians and residents had more frequent exposure to radiation and better knowledge of radiation safety. Online courses and workshops were the preferred methods of training.

Utility of head computed tomography for older adults with suspected delirium in the emergency department: A retrospective observational study

Josh D. Butcher, Mckinley C. Smith, Lauren Roberts, Brittany Ellis

Summary: Delirium in older people is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, making prompt recognition essential. However, this study found that over half of older patients presenting to the emergency department with symptoms of delirium were ordered a CT-head scan, despite infrequent acute findings. Therefore, physicians should be more selective when ordering CT-heads in patients with symptoms of delirium.

Summary: Participation in medical specialty organizations can provide medical students and residents with additional research, advocacy, networking, and leadership opportunities. This study aims to assess the opportunities available for trainees within Canadian medical specialty organizations. The results show that most organizations allow trainees to attend annual conferences, provide travel awards and research grants, and have formal mentorship programs.
