This study demonstrates that the essential oil of Eugenia supra-axillaris and its nanoemulsion have significant anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic effects, making them potential therapeutic options for inflammatory and painful conditions.
The use of standard synthetic medications to treat inflammatory illnesses is associated with several negative effects. It has been shown that medicinal plants and their by-products are useful for safely treating inflammation. Herein, the essential oil of Eugenia supra-axillaris (family: Myrtaceae, ESA-EO) was isolated and further chemically characterized by GC-MS, and then, its nanoemulsion (ESA-EO-NE) was prepared. In addition, the anti-inflammation against the carrageenan-induced rats, the analgesic, and antipyretic activities of ESA-EO and ESA-EO-NE were evaluated in rats. Forty-three compounds were identified via GC-MS and categorized as mono- (61.38%) and sesquiterpenes (34.86%). d-limonene (32.82%), alpha-pinene (24.33%), germacrene-D (4.88%), alpha-humulene (4.73%), alpha-cadinol (3.39%), and trans-caryophyllene (3.15%) represented the main components. The administration of ES-EO and ES-EO-NE (50 and 100 mg/kg) demonstrated strong, dose-dependent inflammation inhibition capabilities in the model of rat paw edema, in comparison with both the reference drug and control. Reduced levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), increased levels of glutathione (GSH), and decreased levels of the proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-alpha), nitrosative (NO), and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in paw tissues all contributed to these substantial reductions in inflammation. Moreover, the oral administration of ESA-EO and ESA-EO-NE (50 and 100 mg/kg) exhibited potent analgesic and antipyretic activities in rats. Although the higher dose of ESA-EO and ESA-EO-NE (100 mg/kg) displayed delayed anti-inflammatory activity, they have long-lasting inflammation inhibition with fast onset and long-standing analgesic effects better than reference drugs. Furthermore, the most effective antipyretic efficacy was provided by ESA-EO-NE (100 mg/kg). These results provide insight into the possible therapeutic application of ESA-EO and its nanoemulsion against various inflammatory and painful illnesses as well as hyperthermia ailments.

Yixian Quah, Shi-Ruo Tong, Joanna Bojarska, Katrin Giller, Sheri-Ann Tan, Zyta Maria Ziora, Tuba Esatbeyoglu, Tsun-Thai Chai

Summary: In the past decade, researchers have shown increasing interest in exploring bioactive peptides derived from edible insects. These peptides have the potential to address human health issues and protect crops and livestock from pathogens. The diversity of bioactive peptides identified from edible insects suggests their potential in addressing various health problems such as inflammation, diabetes, and obesity. While most experiments have been conducted in vitro, evidence is emerging on the in vivo efficacy of some peptides.

Phytochemical Profiling of the Ethanolic Extract of Zaleya pentandra L. Jaffery and Its Biological Activities by In-Vitro Assays and In-Silico Molecular Docking

Afia Shahid, Kashif Ur Rehman Khan, Huma Rao, Hanan Y. Aati, Asmaa E. Sherif, Duraiz Ahmed Khan, Abdul Basit, Muhammad Umair, Abdul Mueed, Tuba Esatbeyoglu, Sameh A. Korma

Summary: This study investigated the phytochemical composition, biological activities, and in silico molecular docking of the ethanolic extract of Zaleya pentandra, the only species of its genus found in the Cholistan desert, Pakistan. The extract showed high phenolic and flavonoid content and exhibited strong antioxidant, enzyme inhibition, antibacterial, and antiviral activities. In silico molecular docking revealed the interaction and binding affinity of the identified compounds with enzymes. These findings provide valuable insights into the potential anti-diabetic, neuroprotective, and skin-protective uses of Z. pentandra and can contribute to the discovery of bioactive compounds in the future.

Comparative Untargeted Metabolic Profiling of Different Parts of Citrus sinensis Fruits via Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry Coupled with Multivariate Data Analyses to Unravel Authenticity

Sherif M. Afifi, Eman M. Kabbash, Ralf G. Berger, Ulrich Krings, Tuba Esatbeyoglu

Summary: Differences in metabolites were investigated in seven authentic samples of Citrus sinensis peel and juices from Spain and Uruguay, as well as a concentrate from Brazil. Sixty-six metabolites belonging to various chemical groups were detected, including phenolic acids, coumarins, flavonoid glycosides, limonoids, terpenes, and fatty acids. Some flavonoids were found to be more abundant in the peel than in the juice, suggesting potential industrial and economic prospects. Multivariate data analyses showed that the differences among orange parts were more significant than the geographical source.

Summary: In this study, the essential oil (EO) from Araucaria heterophylla Salisb. resin was extracted using the microwave technique and chemically characterized via GC-MS analysis. The EO showed a significant antioxidant activity, with IC50 values of 142.42 and 118.03 mg L-1 for DPPH and ABTS, respectively. Moreover, it exhibited considerable phytotoxicity against the weeds Chenopodium murale and Sonchus oleraceus. These findings suggest that the EO of A. heterophylla resin could be a promising natural resource for weed management.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of fermentation on the nutrient-delivering potential and antinutrients of spinach at different growth stages. The results show that fermentation significantly increases the protein and fiber content of spinach, while reducing total carbohydrate content. Furthermore, fermentation decreases the levels of alkaloids, oxalates, phytates, and glucosinolates in spinach. However, fermentation has no impact on the total phenolic content and antioxidant potential of spinach.
