Cenozoic Dynamic Topography of Madagascar

S. N. Stephenson, N. J. White, A. Carter, D. Seward, P. W. Ball, M. Klocking

Summary: The regional uplift of Madagascar is proposed to be generated and maintained by mantle dynamical processes. Through a combined analysis of multiple observational constraints, it is suggested that around 1 km of topography was formed during the Neogene period. Studies on rare earth element concentrations in Neogene rocks indicate partial melting of the mantle occurred at varying depths and temperatures.

Thermal Structure of Eastern Australia's Upper Mantle and Its Relationship to Cenozoic Volcanic Activity and Dynamic Topography

P. W. Ball, K. Czarnota, N. J. White, M. Klocking, D. R. Davies

Summary: The study aims to understand the upper mantle structure through analyzing volcanic rocks in eastern Australia. Results suggest that volcanic activity in the region may be caused by the passage of mantle plumes, leading to significantly higher mantle temperatures, thinning lithosphere, and uplift of the Eastern Highlands.

Melting conditions and mantle source composition from probabilistic joint inversion of major and rare earth element concentrations

B. Oliveira, J. C. Afonso, M. Klocking

Summary: The study introduces a probabilistic inversion framework for mafic volcanic rocks, demonstrating its ability to constrain mantle potential temperature, depth of melting, and source composition. Numerical experiments show the sensitivity of the inversion approach and the advantages of joint inversion using major and trace element compositions.

Summary: The development of data acquisition and processing in geochemical and cosmochemical research has led to scientific insights and innovation. However, challenges arise in data reporting, requiring unified formats and descriptions for result integration and data reuse. International collaboration, education and outreach efforts, improved technical infrastructure, and the development of best practices are necessary to address these challenges.
