Limited data exist regarding the outcomes of patients with nonobstructive coronary artery disease (CAD) detected by computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA) or invasive coronary angiography (ICA). Our aim was to compare the prognosis of patients with nonobstructive coronary artery plaques with that of patients with entirely normal arteries. The MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, and Embase databases were searched. Studies comparing the prognosis of individuals with nonobstructive CAD versus normal coronary arteries detected by CTCA or ICA were included. The primary outcome was major adverse cardiac events (MACE) including cardiac death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, hospitalization due to unstable angina or revascularization. A fixed effects model was chosen to pool the estimates of odds ratios (ORs). Forty-eight studies with 64,905 individuals met the inclusion criteria. Patients in the nonobstructive CAD arm had a significantly higher risk of MACE compared to their counterparts in the normal artery arm (pooled OR, 3.17, 95% confidence interval, 2.77-3.63). When excluding revascularization as an endpoint, hard cardiac composite outcomes were also more frequent among patients with nonobstructive CAD (pooled OR, 2.10; 95% CI, 1.79-2.45). All subgroups (age, sex, follow-up duration, different outcomes, diagnostic modality, and CAD risk factor) consistently showed a poorer prognosis with nonobstructive CAD than with normal arteries. When dividing the studies into a CTCA and ICA group for further analysis based on the indications for diagnostic tests, we also found nonobstructive CAD to be associated with a higher risk of MACE in both stable and acute chest pain. Patients with nonobstructive CAD had a poorer prognosis compared with their counterparts with normal arteries.

Yi Zhang, Tian-Yuan Xiong, Yi-Ming Li, Yi-Jun Yao, Jing-Jing He, Hao-Ran Yang, Zhong-Kai Zhu, Fei Chen, Yuanweixiang Ou, Xi Wang, Qi Liu, Xi Li, Yi-Jian Li, Yan-Biao Liao, Fang-Yang Huang, Zhen-Gang Zhao, Qiao Li, Xin Wei, Yong Peng, Sen He, Jia-Fu Wei, Wen-Xia Zhou, Ming-Xia Zheng, Yun Bao, Xuan Zhou, Hong Tang, Wei Meng, Yuan Feng, Mao Chen

Summary: This study aimed to compare the clinical adverse events in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) versus tricuspid aortic valve (TAV) anatomy, as well as the efficacy of balloon-expandable (BE) versus self-expanding (SE) valves in the BAV population. The findings showed that patients with BAV had higher risks of complications such as the need for a second valve or permanent pacemaker implantation, compared to patients with TAV. However, TAVR remains a viable option for selected patients with severe BAV and the newer generation devices demonstrated better outcomes in terms of reducing complications.

Summary: Glioblastoma is the most common malignant brain tumor with limited response to immunotherapeutic strategies. The use of a new generation of vaccinia virus enhances immune control over the tumor and results in tumor growth control and long-term survival in mice models. The upregulation of stem cell memory T cells after virus treatment contributes to the strong and durable anti-tumor activity.

The influence of pressure injury risk on the association between left ventricular ejection fraction and all-cause mortality in patients with acute myocardial infarction 80 years or older

Bao-tao Huang, Yi-heng Cheng, Bo-sen Yang, Yi-ke Zhang, Fang -yang Huang, Yong Peng, Xiao-bo Pu, Mao Chen

Summary: This study investigated whether pressure injury risk mediates the association between left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and all-cause death in patients aged 80 years or older with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The results showed that reduced LVEF was associated with an increased risk of all-cause death only in the high-risk group of pressure injury, with significant interactions between pressure injury risk and LVEF. Incorporating pressure injury risk assessment into AMI care management improved the classification of older patients for therapy and prognosis assessment.

Novel stirring-rod-inspired mixer-integrated printhead for fabricating gradient tissue structures

Pengju Wang, Yazhou Sun, Ziyang Ma, Liwei Diao, Haitao Liu, V. Prasad Shastri

Summary: Conventional methods for creating gradient tissue structures using extrusion-based 3D printing systems involve using mixers to create homogeneous materials. However, commercially available mixers can generate high fluid pressure and shear force that harm cells. Hence, a new mixer-integrated print-head was developed, inspired by stirring-rod-assisted mixing processes. The as-designed mixing system was validated through computational fluid dynamics simulations.

Extrusion-based 3D co-printing: Printing material design and novel workflow for fabricating patterned heterogeneous tissue structures

Pengju Wang, Yazhou Sun, Dekai Li, Ziyang Ma, Bohan Zhang, Liwei Diao, Haitao Liu

Summary: This study proposes a new approach for preparing structured inks for extrusion-based 3D printing (E3DP), which controls the material distribution before printing. The feasibility is verified through ink preparation and process parameter optimization, using a combination of casting and 3D printing. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation is employed to analyze the ink flow, and the geometric parameters are determined by analyzing the cross section of the extruded fibers. This approach enriches E3DP and facilitates the fabrication of heterogeneous tissue structures.

The long noncoding RNA THBS1-AS1 promotes cardiac fibroblast activation in cardiac fibrosis by regulating TGFBR1

Junteng Zhou, Geer Tian, Yue Quan, Qihang Kong, Fangyang Huang, Junli Li, Wenchao Wu, Yong Tang, Zhichao Zhou, Xiaojing Liu

Summary: Cardiac fibrosis is a detrimental process in cardiovascular disease, leading to reduced cardiac compliance and ultimately heart failure. In this study, the key long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) THBS1-AS1 was identified as positively associated with cardiac fibrosis. Functional studies demonstrated that THBS1-AS1 could regulate cardiac fibroblast activation through miR-221/222 and TGFBR1. In vivo knockdown of THBS1-AS1 alleviated cardiac fibrosis, suggesting it as a potential therapeutic target for cardiac fibrosis treatment.

Interleukin-37 promotes colitis-associated carcinogenesis via SIGIRR-mediated cytotoxic T cells dysfunction

Zhen Wang, Fan-lian Zeng, Ya-wen Hu, Xiao-yan Wang, Fu-lei Zhao, Pei Zhou, Jing Hu, Yuan-yuan Xiao, Zhong-lan Hu, Ming-feng Guo, Xiao-qiong Wei, Xiao Liu, Nong-yu Huang, Jun Zhang, Shu-wen Chen, Juan Cheng, Hua-ping Zheng, Hong Zhou, Qi-xiang Zhao, Chen Zhang, Yan Hao, Song Zou, Yi-yue Gui, Jia-dong Yu, Lin-na Gu, Cheng-cheng Yue, Hao-zhou Zhang, Wen-ling Wu, Yi-fan Zhou, Xi-kun Zhou, Guo-bo Shen, Xiu Teng, Jiong Li

Summary: Interleukin-37b (IL-37) is a crucial inhibitor of natural and acquired immunity. Research has shown that IL-37 increases the risk of colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CAC) and dampens the immune response mediated by cytotoxic T cells. IL-37 has little effect on intestinal mutagenesis, CRC cell proliferation, apoptosis, and migration. Additionally, IL-37 levels are significantly increased in CRC patients, positively correlated with serum CRC biomarker CEA levels, but negatively correlated with CD8(+) T cell infiltration.
