Optimizing postoperative outcomes following neoadjuvant chemotherapy and mastectomy with immediate reconstruction: A national analysis

Kometh Thawanyarat, Thomas Johnstone, Mallory Rowley, Yelissa Navarro, Chandler Hinson, Rahim S. Nazerali

Summary: The timing between last neoadjuvant chemotherapy session and mastectomy with immediate reconstruction is important for optimizing postoperative outcomes. A longer time interval between chemotherapy and reconstruction is associated with a decreased likelihood of postoperative complications. The ideal time delay for reconstruction is between 4 and 8 weeks.

Treatment of Chronic Hypertrophic Burn Scars With a Fractional CO2 Laser Is Well Tolerated in an Outpatient Clinic Setting

Kimberly A. Donnellan, Chandler S. Hinson, Addison C. Blevins, Katrina L. Weaver, Alicia C. Lintner, Charles C. Butts, Ashley Y. Williams, Yann-leei L. Lee, Jon D. Simmons, Andrew C. Bright

Summary: The use of CO2 lasers for treating hypertrophic burn scars is a common nonoperative option. Recent advances in laser technology have made the procedure more tolerable. This study demonstrates that treating refractory hypertrophic burn scars with a CO2 laser in an outpatient clinic is well tolerated and leads to high patient satisfaction.

Long-term assessment of the functional independence measure in sports-related spinal cord injury

Michael Pozin, Daniel Najafali, Anant Naik, Bailey MacInnis, Natasha Subbarao, Scott L. Zuckerman, Paul M. Arnold

Summary: This study examined long-term outcomes of sports-related spinal cord injury (SRSCI) using Functional Independence Measure (FIM) scoring. The study found that predictors of independence differed at one and five-year follow-up, depending on surgical and non-surgical management. This research contributes to our understanding of SRSCI patients and highlights the need for further investigation.

Artificial intelligence knowledge of evidence-based recommendations in gender affirmation surgery and gender identity: is ChatGPT aware of WPATH recommendations?

Daniel Najafali, Chandler Hinson, Justin M. Camacho, Logan G. Galbraith, Tannon L. Tople, Danielle Eble, Brielle Weinstein, Loren S. Schechter, Amir H. Dorafshar, Shane D. Morrison

Summary: ChatGPT intermittently references evidence-based recommendations related to gender-affirming surgery (GAS) and is capable of describing aspects of gender diversity using neutral language. However, without being rooted in evidence-based recommendations, AI technology has the potential to spread misinformation. Therefore, AI can serve as a valuable tool for patient education on GAS.

Prediction of blood pressure variability during thrombectomy using supervised machine learning and outcomes of patients with ischemic stroke from large vessel occlusion

Daniel Najafali, Thomas Johnstone, Melissa Pergakis, Adelina Buganu, Muhammad Ullah, Kim Vuong, Bhakti Panchal, Mark Sutherland, Karen L. Yarbrough, Michael S. Phipps, Gaurav Jindal, Quincy K. Tran

Summary: Mechanical thrombectomy (MT) is the standard treatment for acute ischemic stroke patients with large vessel occlusion (AIS-LVO). The impact of blood pressure variability (BPV) during MT on outcomes is not clear. A machine learning algorithm was used to predict patient characteristics associated with BPV indices. Age, admission NIHSS, mechanical ventilation, and TICI score were significantly associated with outcome.
