Considering the scarce information on occurrences of Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum in domestic animals from Turkey, the aim of this study was to investigate the seroprevalence of these parasite infections in cattle, horses, sheep, goats and dogs in Turkey. The specific antibodies against T gondii and N. caninum were detected by iELISAs based on the recombinant TgSAG2 or NcSAG1 in a total of 2,039 serum samples from eleven provinces. The seroprevalence of T. gondii infections was 46.3%, 4.0%, 20.0%, 12.9% and 19.8%, that of N. caninum infections was 0.3%, 7.4%, 2.1%, 3.2% and 16.6% in the horses, cattle, sheep, goats and dogs, respectively. These results indicated that T gondii and N. caninum infections are prevalent in Turkish domestic animals.

Ruenruetai Udonsom, Yoshifumi Nishikawa, Ragab M. Fereig, Thitirat Topisit, Natchakorn Kulkaweewut, Supitcha Chanamrung, Charoonluk Jirapattharasate

Summary: This study investigated the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in elephants in Thailand and found that Asian elephants are widely exposed to the parasite, with higher infection rates observed in young elephants. However, the source of infection was not determined, highlighting the need for further research on the potential risk factors associated with toxoplasmosis.

Molecular Detection and Genetic Diversity of Tick-Borne Pathogens in Goats from the Southern Part of Thailand

Ruenruetai Udonsom, Aongart Mahittikorn, Charoonluk Jirapattharasate

Summary: A study conducted in three provinces in southern Thailand revealed the presence of Theileria spp. and A. ovis infection in goats, with T. orientalis being identified for the first time in Thai goats. This study provides valuable information on the infection rates and genetic diversity of tick-borne pathogens in goats, which can aid in the development of effective control measures for preventing animal diseases in Thailand.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of tick-borne pathogens in cattle ticks in five provinces of Turkey and performed molecular characterization. The results showed that 57.8% of the DNA pools tested positive for at least one pathogen, with Babesia bovis being the most frequently detected pathogen. This study also reported the first molecular detection of Rickettsia sp. Chad in Turkey.

Summary: In our study, we synthesized and tested the cytotoxic, antifungal, and larvicidal activities of bis-sulfonamide Schiff base derivatives. Among the 16 compounds tested, A1B2, A1B4, A4B2, A4B3, and A4B4 showed cytotoxic activity against lung cancer cells. A2B1 and A2B2 exhibited the strongest antifungal activity against all tested fungi, while A1B1 had the highest larvicidal effect. These results suggest that these bis-substituted compounds could be promising pharmacophores for various diseases.

Summary: Although Hepatozoon spp. is the most common intracellular protozoa infecting snakes, its occurrence in snakes from the Colubridae family in Turkiye is limited. This study investigated Hepatozoon spp. in venomous nose-horned vipers from Turkiye. Morphological and molecular methods were used, and positive results for Hepatozoon spp. were found in three snakes. A new species, Hepatozoon viperoi sp. nov., was identified and its genetic relationship with other Hepatozoon species was analyzed. This study expands our knowledge of Hepatozoon species in snakes and contributes to the understanding of haemogregarine protozoan parasites.

Maggot debridement therapy in an infected wounded dog: A case report

Ugur Uslu, Ayse Evci, Hueseyin Koray Akdeniz, Onur Ceylan

Summary: Maggot debridement therapy (MDT), although losing its importance with the advent of antibiotics, has seen an increase in recent years for treating non-healing wounds. This case report investigates the efficacy of MDT on a post-operative infected wound in a 5-month-old Doberman dog. After multiple applications of MDT, the wound showed gradual healing and positive response.

In vitro multitarget activity of sulfadiazine substituted triazenes as antimicrobial, cytotoxic, and larvicidal agents

Hasan Aydin, Suleyman Akocak, Nebih Lolak, Ugur Uslu, Ahmet Sait, Serol Korkmaz, Ayse Parmaksiz, Onur Ceylan, Abdulbaki Aksakal

Summary: Multidrug resistance (MDR) poses challenges in the treatment of infections and cancer. Research and development studies are crucial in preventing MDR. This study focused on investigating the effects of multi-target triazene compounds on various activities related to bacteria, fungi, viruses, cytotoxicity, and larvicidal efficacy. Novel derivatives of 1,3-diaryltriazene-substituted sulfadiazine (SDZ) were synthesized and characterized, showing potential as multitargeted agents. These compounds exhibited antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, cytotoxic, and larvicidal activities.
