A sediment bypass tunnel (SBT) is utilized to reduce reservoir sedimentation and restore river ecosystems by transporting sediment downstream. In this study, the benthic invertebrate community downstream of the Asahi Dam in Japan was analyzed to investigate long-term changes after the installation of the SBT. The study revealed that the SBT installation led to a significant increase in community similarity between upstream and downstream sites, indicating rapid recovery of the invertebrate community. However, the study also highlighted the need for additional measures to maintain habitat diversity and biodiversity in the long term, such as cobble augmentation and flow guiding structures.
A sediment bypass tunnel (SBT) is a dam facility used to mitigate reservoir sedimentation and is expected to contribute to river ecosystem restoration by delivering sediment to the degraded downstream channel. We analyzed past monitoring data of benthic invertebrates sampled downstream of the Asahi Dam in Nara Prefecture Japan to understand the long-term changes in the invertebrate community after the installation of the SBT. Before the SBT installation, the reaches upstream of the dam (one Up site) and downstream of the dam (two Down sites) showed different invertebrate communities, dominated by invertebrates that preferred clean cobble beds, sand and gravel layers, or run habitats in the former and invertebrates that preferred stable or porous beds or pool habitats in the latter. A significant increase in the Up-Down site community similarity within a few years after the SBT installation indicated a rapid recovery of the invertebrate community at the Down sites. During the 16 years of the after-SBT period, the total density and taxon richness at the Down sites increased in the early half, while they decreased in the latter half due to bed changes associated with the continuous accumulation of sediments. The change in dominant invertebrates from taxa of the large sizes to those of the small sizes and the increase in the interhabitat community similarity suggest that the bed of the Down sites became finer and flatter by sand and gravel that filled interstitial spaces of cobbles in the late stage. While the invertebrate community at the Down sites recovered dramatically by the sediment supply through the SBT, additional actions (e.g., cobble augmentation, installation of flow guiding structures) to maintain a balanced sediment size distribution and developed pool-riffle structures would be necessary to maintain the potential habitat heterogeneity and biodi-versity in the long term. Our study also demonstrated that invertebrates responded to the sediment supply ac-cording to their habitat preferences, which suggests that the classifications of invertebrates by habitat-related traits (e.g., bed-residence types and pool-riffle types in this study) would help to properly understand the sediment and bed status of river reaches under channel degradation or aggradation.

Implications of taxonomic and numerical resolution on DNA metabarcoding-based inference of benthic macroinvertebrate responses to river restoration

Joeselle M. Serrana, Bin Li, Tetsuya Sumi, Yasuhiro Takemon, Kozo Watanabe

Summary: This study investigates the response of benthic macroinvertebrate communities to the restoration of gravel bars in a dam-impacted river. It compares the performance of different taxonomic and numerical resolutions in DNA metabarcoding with morphology-based identification. The study finds that DNA metabarcoding provides finer taxonomic resolution and shows significant congruence with morphological identification. Coarser taxonomic resolution can be advantageous in situations where there is a lack of taxonomic information.

Understanding the anthropogenic development impacts on long-term flow regimes in a tropical river basin, Central Vietnam

Binh Quang Nguyen, Sameh Kantoush, Doan Van Binh, Mohamed Saber, Duong Ngoc Vo, Tetsuya Sumi

Summary: This study quantitatively evaluates the long-term alterations in flow regimes of the Vu Gia Thu Bon rivers in Central Vietnam from 1977 to 2020, caused by upstream anthropogenic developments. The findings show that reservoir operations have reduced maximum and high-flow discharges since 2011. However, the construction of the Dak Mi 4 hydropower dam has led to decreased minimum and low-flow discharges in the pre-dam period and increased discharges in the post-dam period.

Assessment of sediment yield and deposition in a dry reservoir using field observations, RUSLE and remote sensing: Wadi Assarin, Oman

Summary: Soil erosion and sediment transportation in arid regions can cause reservoir storage losses and degradation of downstream channels. However, the lack of data and a formula for sediment yield calculation has hindered reservoir management. This study aimed to estimate annual soil loss using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) with remote sensing data. The sediment trapped in the Assarin Dam reservoir was estimated using UAV surveys and photogrammetry analysis. The results can support reservoir management practices and demonstrate the suitability of UAV-based photogrammetry for measuring trapped sediment volumes.

Ensemble rainfall-runoff and inundation simulations using 100 and 1000 member rainfalls by 4D LETKF on the Kumagawa River flooding 2020

Summary: This paper presents 1000 ensemble flood simulations based on ensemble rainfalls simulated by 4D LETKF. The large ensemble size of 1000 members is used to avoid sampling errors in the three-dimensional meteorological simulation. The study focuses on the Kumagawa river catchment and compares the results with operational forecast rainfalls and independent 4D-LETKF ensemble rainfalls. The findings suggest that a large number of ensemble simulations may not be necessary for catchment-average rainfall-runoff and 2.5-dimensional inundation simulations, and the flood flow patterns can be classified in horizontally accumulated 2D rainfall field.

Exploring invertebrate indicators of ecosystem health by focusing on the flow transitional zones in a large, shallow eutrophic lake

Aimin Hao, Sohei Kobayashi, Fangbo Chen, Zhixiong Yan, Takaaki Torii, Min Zhao, Yasushi Iseri

Summary: The river-lake transitional zone is important for maintaining water quality in Lake Taihu. This study examined the water and sediment quality and benthic invertebrate communities in four regions of the transitional zone. The results showed spatial variations in the environment and invertebrate community, with pollution-tolerant species dominating the northern and western regions. Wind-wave actions in the southern region promoted photosynthetic activity and favored invertebrates that require well-aerated conditions. Brackish and saline environment-adapted invertebrates are suggested as indicators of a well-circulated and less eutrophic state in Lake Taihu.

Summary: Phenology monitoring is important for understanding forest functioning and climate impacts. This research compares the phenological behavior of European beech forests using Tree-Talker (TT+) and Sentinel 2 satellite data.
