In this international study, the HepB-CpG vaccine was effective in generating protective hepatitis B virus antibodies in people with HIV who had not been previously vaccinated. There were no unexpected safety concerns observed.
In this international, multicenter open-label study (ACTG A5379) of HepB-CpG vaccine in people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) without prior hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccination, all 68 participants achieved HBV seroprotective titers after the 3-dose series in the primary analysis. No unexpected safety issues were observed.

A pilot study of microbial signatures of liver disease in those with HIV mono-infection in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Carolyn Yanavich, Hugo Perazzo, Fan Li, Nicole Tobin, David Lee, Sara Zabih, Michelle Morata, Cristiane Almeida, Valdilea G. Veloso, Beatriz Grinsztejn, Grace M. Aldrovandi

Summary: The relationship between the microbiome and liver disease in HIV-infection was examined by analyzing the rectal microbiome. The study found distinct microbial profiles in HIV mono-infected individuals with steatosis or fibrosis, some of which are similar to those associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in HIV-negative populations. Further studies are needed to understand the role of the gut microbiota in the pathogenesis of liver disease in HIV-infected persons.

What Are We Measuring When We Evaluate Digital Interventions for Improving Lifestyle? A Scoping Meta-Review

Rodolfo Castro, Marcelo Ribeiro-Alves, Catia Oliveira, Carmen Phang Romero, Hugo Perazzo, Mario Simjanoski, Flavio Kapciznki, Vicent Balanza-Martinez, Raquel B. De Boni

Summary: This study aimed to describe the most frequent lifestyle domains addressed by Digital Health Interventions (DHIs), the most frequent outcomes used to measure lifestyle changes, and the most frequent delivery methods for DHIs. The findings revealed that the most frequently evaluated domains were diet/nutrition and physical activity, and the most frequent delivery methods were smartphone apps and websites.

Agreement and accuracy of shear-wave techniques (point shear-wave elastography and 2D-shear-wave elastography) using transient elastography as reference

Flavia Fernandes, Juliana Piedade, Gabriela Freitas, Philippe Area, Ricardo Santos, Beatriz Grinsztejn, Valdilea Veloso, Gustavo Pereira, Hugo Perazzo

Summary: This study evaluated the agreement and accuracy of point shear-wave elastography (p-SWE) and 2D shear-wave elastography (2D-SWE) for liver fibrosis staging. The results showed satisfactory correlation between p-SWE and 2D-SWE with transient elastography (TE). p-SWE seemed to be more accurate than 2D-SWE in identifying patients with more advanced fibrosis.

Hepatitis of unknown etiology in children in Brazil: A new challenge or the usual scenario ?

Rodolfo Castro, Marcelo Ribeiro-Alves, Valdilea G. Veloso, Hugo Perazzo

Summary: The study aimed to describe the burden of hospitalizations due to hepatitis of unknown etiology in children/adolescents in Brazilian public hospitals. Significant differences in the incidence rates of hospitalizations for hepatitis of unknown etiology were found across different age groups, with some patients requiring liver transplantation and experiencing mortality during hospitalization.

Validation of the Baveno VI criteria to rule out high-risk varices using hepatic shear-wave elastography

Summary: Liver stiffness measurement by transient elastography can accurately predict high-risk varices, and when combined with platelet count, can effectively rule out high-risk varices in patients with compensated advanced chronic liver disease. This method offers a high accuracy rate and low rate of missed diagnosis compared to gastrointestinal endoscopy.

Accuracy and concordance of two-dimensional shear-wave elastography using transient elastography as the reference in chronic viral hepatitis and HIV infection in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Mariana Coelho, Flavia Fernandes, Sandra W. Cardoso, Juliana Piedade, Marcos Vinicius Torres da Silva, Ricardo Santos, Valdilea G. Veloso, Beatriz Grinsztejn, Gustavo Henrique Pereira, Hugo Perazzo

Summary: This study evaluated the accuracy and agreement between two-dimensional shear-wave elastography (2D-SWE) LOGIQ-S8 and transient elastography in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The results showed that 2D-SWE had good agreement with transient elastography and excellent accuracy in identifying individuals at high risk for compensated-advanced chronic liver disease (c-ACLD).

Summary: This study explores the impact of genetic variations in inflammasome genes on the clinical course of COVID-19. The findings suggest that certain genetic variations may influence the progression to critical outcomes, such as mechanical ventilation support or death, in individuals with COVID-19.

Acceptability and usability of oral fluid HCV self-testing for hepatitis C diagnosis: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Hugo Perazzo, Rodolfo Castro, Cristiane Villela-Nogueira, Marcos Torres, Samara Luiza Silva, Sandra W. Cardoso, Beatriz Grinsztejn, Valdilea G. Veloso

Summary: Data on the acceptability and usability of hepatitis C virus self-testing using oral fluid tests are scarce. However, this study found that HCVST with oral fluid tests was feasible and well-accepted. The correct sample collection rate and the proportion of people who performed HCVST without assistance were relatively high, indicating that oral fluid HCVST could be considered for HCV testing in key populations.

Pathways to Poor Adherence to Antiretroviral Therapy Among People Living with HIV: The Role of Food Insecurity and Alcohol Misuse

Hugo Perazzo, Juliana L. Goncalves, Sandra W. Cardoso, Beatriz Grinsztejn, Valdilea G. Veloso, Paula M. Luz

Summary: Daily adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) is crucial for improving the length and quality of life for people living with HIV (PLHIV). This study in Rio de Janeiro explored how socioeconomic status, alcohol misuse, and food insecurity impact ART adherence. The results showed that lower socioeconomic status and higher food insecurity were associated with poorer adherence, while alcohol misuse had a direct negative effect. Providing socioeconomic support and addressing alcohol-related issues can enhance HIV care.

Frequency and predictive factors of minimal hepatic encephalopathy before and after sustained virological response in HCV cirrhosis

Juliana Piedade, Livia Guimaraes, Joana Duarte, Lorena Gouveia, Tamar Garfinkel, Zulane Veiga, Camila Alcantara, Hugo Perazzo, Flavia Fernandes, Gustavo Pereira

Summary: This study found that minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) still exists in patients with cirrhosis after achieving a sustained virological response (SVR) to direct-acting agents (DAA) treatment for hepatitis C virus (HCV). SVR does not completely resolve MHE, and older age, hypertension, and hypoalbuminemia after SVR are independent predictors of MHE after SVR.
