Summary: This study found that crude polysaccharide YZW-A extracted from pomelo fruitlets has protective effects on oxidative stress, inflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction-mediated apoptosis. YZW-A increased activities of mitochondrial respiratory complexes and antioxidative enzymes, decreased expression of proinflammatory cytokines, and alleviated cell apoptosis through mitigating oxidative stress. These results suggest the therapeutic potential of YZW-A on aquatic animals.

Summary: Doxorubicin (DOX) can lead to mitochondrial dysfunction and heart failure. COX5A, an important regulator of mitochondrial energy metabolism, plays a protective role in DOX-induced cardiomyopathy. The expression of COX5A is decreased in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy and after DOX treatment. Overexpression of COX5A improves cardiac function, glucose uptake, mitochondrial morphology, COX activity, and ATP content in DOX-stimulated mice. COX5A protects against oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and cardiomyocyte apoptosis via the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway.

Summary: The study showed that flurochloridone induces apoptosis in TM4 cells through the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway, accompanied by accumulation of ROS, depolarization of the mitochondrial membrane potential, etc. Pretreatment with the ROS scavenger NAC significantly alleviated flurochloridone-induced cell apoptosis and MMP depolarization.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the impact of propionate supply on mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and apoptosis in calf hepatocytes under high FFA load. The results demonstrated that propionate supply could alleviate mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and apoptosis by upregulating PGC-1 alpha in FFA-treated calf hepatocytes.

Summary: This study demonstrated that in vitro exposure to polystyrene nanoparticles (PS-NPs) can induce cytotoxic effects on Leydig cells, including oxidative injury, mitochondrial impairment, apoptosis, and cytomembrane destruction. These findings provide new insights into male reproductive toxicity caused by nanoparticles.

Summary: This study investigates the role of branched chain amino acid (BCAA) metabolism in the development of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and the potential protective effect of BCATc Inhibitor 2. The results show that supplementation of BCAAs exacerbates lipid accumulation and apoptosis, while treatment with BCATc Inhibitor 2 ameliorates these damages. Molecularly, BCATc Inhibitor 2 regulates the expression of genes related to lipogenesis and maintains mitochondrial function. Additionally, BCATc Inhibitor 2 treatment inhibits the activation of several signaling pathways associated with apoptosis.

Summary: Research on the toxicity and underlying mechanisms of PM in the middle ear is limited, making it crucial to identify toxic PM constituents based on season and region and investigate their health effects. Experimental findings show that PM exposure increases COX-2 and TNF-alpha mRNA expression, ROS generation, induces inflammatory responses, causes abnormalities in mitochondrial motility and function, and leads to cell apoptosis, particularly at a concentration of 100 μg/mL, reducing cell survival.

Summary: Cadmium exposure triggers apoptosis in KGN cells by inducing mitochondrial dysfunction, including excessive ROS production and intracellular Ca2+ overload. Activation of downstream signaling pathways following mitochondrial dysfunction may contribute to granulosa cell death and female reproductive toxicity after exposure to Cd.

Summary: The study demonstrated that nobiletin (NOB) effectively alleviated nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and liver fibrosis by reducing hepatic oxidative stress and attenuating mitochondrial dysfunction. This suggests that NOB may be a promising agent for the treatment of NASH and liver fibrosis.

Summary: The cellular mechanisms and signaling network underlying cardiac disease are complex, leading to the current lack of effective therapy. Cardiomyocytes and mitochondrial dysfunction have emerged as key targets for intervention. This review explores the potential of renalase to improve mitochondrial dysfunction in cardiac disease through multiple mechanisms, including preserving mitochondrial integrity and dynamics, increasing ATP content, enhancing mtDNA copy numbers, upregulating mitochondrial genes, inhibiting mitochondrial fission, supplementing NAD(+), upregulating sirtuins, and exerting antioxidant, anti-apoptotic, and anti-inflammatory effects.
