The research estimated the impact of the size of zinc oxide nanoparticles on biomass production and nutritional qualities in baby leaf Swiss chard.
Understanding the interactions between nanoparticles (NPs) and plants is crucial in comprehending the impact of nanotechnology on agriculture, with a focus on plant toxicity concerns and risks to human health. Zinc (Zn) belongs to the micronutrients with poor bioavailability, though this element is essential for the vital functions of plants. In this respect, this research estimated the impact of the size of zinc oxide NPs (ZnO NPs) applied by foliar application on biomass production and nutritional qualities in baby leaf Swiss chard (Beta vulgaris ssp. cicla L. cv. Barese). Plants were grown hydroponically in controlled environment growth chambers, and exposed via foliar spray to varying particle sizes of ZnO NPs (18, 35-45, and 80-200 nm) at a concentration of 200 ppm. Control plants were sprayed with distilled water. The results revealed that ZnO NPs improved fresh and dry biomass, leaf area, favored leaf chlorophyll and flavonol indexes, and improved the total soluble protein content in Swiss chard. The total phenolic content and antioxidant properties depended more on different sizes of ZnO NPs in the solutions used for spraying plants. ZnO NPs significantly increased the accumulation of Zn and Fe in edible tissues. Still, the hazard quotient values of Zn and Fe were lower than 1, which supports the safe consumption of Swiss chard after ZnO NP treatment. In conclusion, these results revealed that ZnO NPs could be applied in Swiss chard production to improve yield, quality, and nutraceutical properties.

The Effects of Nano-copper, -molybdenum, -boron, and -silica on Pea (Pisum sativum L.) Growth, Antioxidant Properties, and Mineral Uptake

Ruta Sutuliene, Lina Rageliene, Pavelas Duchovskis, Jurga Miliauskiene

Summary: This study investigated the concentration-dependent effects of SiO2, Cu, Mo, and B NPs on pea growth, antioxidant properties, and mineral uptake. Mo and SiO2 NPs showed positive effects at all concentrations, while B and CuO NPs were toxic to peas at 100 ppm. The results suggest that the impact of SiO2, Cu, Mo, B NPs on pea plants can vary from positive to negative depending on the concentration used.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of different light conditions on the growth characteristics of strawberry Colletotrichum acutatum. The results showed that blue and green LEDs had strong inhibitory effects on the fungus growth at low photon flux densities. The size and morphology of the spores were also influenced by the light conditions.

Summary: This study investigated the changes in phenolic compounds content in lettuce under different LED lighting conditions in a greenhouse. Supplemental 400 nm and 455 + 530 nm LEDs showed the most positive effect on total phenolic compounds. The effect of LED lighting varied depending on the timing and season of cultivation.

Differential Physiological Response and Antioxidant Activity Relative to High-Power Micro-Waves Irradiation and Temperature of Tomato Sprouts

Audrius Radzevicius, Sandra Sakalauskiene, Mindaugas Dagys, Rimantas Simniskis, Rasa Karkleliene, Danguole Juskeviciene, Roma Rackiene, Ausra Brazaityte

Summary: Among different types of stress, microwaves and temperature have significant impacts on plant growth. High Power Microwaves (HPM) and elevated temperature exposure were found to slightly enhance plant-growing indicators for tomato seeds and sprouts. Additionally, the irradiation of tomato plants and seeds significantly reduced the content of non-structural carbohydrates.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of boron nanoparticles on the antioxidant system and oxidative stress biomarkers in drought-stressed pea plants. The results showed that spraying with B2O3 nanoparticles at 12.5 ppm effectively stimulated phenol accumulation, antioxidant capacity, and enzyme activity in pea leaves exposed to drought. Furthermore, B2O3 nanoparticles reduced the levels of oxidative stress biomarkers and improved the growth and yield of pea plants affected by drought.

UV-A for Tailoring the Nutritional Value and Sensory Properties of Leafy Vegetables

Kristina Lauzike, Akvile Virsile, Giedre Samuoliene, Ruta Sutuliene, Ausra Brazaityte

Summary: The study aims to improve the nutritional and sensory value of cultivated leafy vegetables by incorporating UV-A wavelengths into traditional visible spectrum lighting in controlled environment cultivation systems. Different genotypes of leafy vegetables were grown under LED lighting supplemented with UV-A or violet wavelengths. The results showed species-specific effects of UV-A/violet light on growth, antioxidant activity, and phytochemical contents of the vegetables, which were not correlated with untrained consumer's sensory evaluation scores. The 405 nm light was found to have higher antioxidant and/or sensory properties in kale, mustard, and green leaf lettuces, while both UV-A wavelengths reduced growth parameters in red leaf lettuce.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of an aqueous suspension of MoO3 nanoparticles on drought-affected peas through watering and spraying. The results showed that 50 ppm MoO3 nanoparticles significantly improved the yield, height, leaf area, and nodule number of drought-stressed peas. MoO3 nanoparticles also enhanced the antioxidant activity of the peas and increased the total phenolic compounds.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of lighting PPFD on the growth, photosynthesis, and antioxidant response of purslane cultivars, aiming to determine energy-efficient lighting strategies in CEA. The results show that the response to light PPFD is cultivar-specific, with the green cultivar exhibiting higher dry weight accumulation and light use efficiency. However, the dependence of dry weight accumulation, plant height, and leaf area on light intensity is not economically significant.

The Response of Antioxidant System of Drought-Stressed Green Pea (Pisum sativum L.) Affected by Watering and Foliar Spray with Silica Nanoparticles

Ruta Sutuliene, Lina Rageliene, Giedre Samuoliene, Ausra Brazaityte, Martynas Urbutis, Jurga Miliauskiene

Summary: The study showed that application of silica nanoparticles improved the growth and antioxidative response of pea plants under drought stress conditions, by increasing relative water content, specific leaf area, and antioxidant enzyme activity, while reducing hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxidation. This suggests that silica nanoparticles could help protect pea plants from the damaging effects of drought and mitigate global food shortages.
