The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the intellectual structure of the research on educational technology in science education (ETiSE) within the most recent years (2008-2013). Based on the criteria for educational technology research and the citation threshold for educational co-citation analysis, a total of 137 relevant ETiSE papers were identified from the International Journal of Science Education, the Journal of Research in Science Teaching, Science Education, and the Journal of Science Education and Technology. Then, a series of methodologies were performed to analyze all 137 source documents, including document co-citation analysis, social network analysis, and exploratory factor analysis. As a result, 454 co-citation ties were obtained and then graphically visualized with an undirected network, presenting a global structure of the current ETiSE research network. In addition, four major underlying intellectual subfields within the main component of the ETiSE network were extracted and named as: (1) technology-enhanced science inquiry, (2) simulation and visualization for understanding, (3) technology-enhanced chemistry learning, and (4) game-based science learning. The most influential co-citation pairs and cross-boundary phenomena were then analyzed and visualized in a co-citation network. This is the very first attempt to illuminate the core ideas underlying ETiSE research by integrating the co-citation method, factor analysis, and the networking visualization technique. The findings of this study provide a platform for scholarly discussion of the dissemination and research trends within the current ETiSE literature.

Immersive virtual reality for science learning: Design, implementation, and evaluation

Henry Matovu, Dewi Ayu Kencana Ungu, Mihye Won, Chin-Chung Tsai, David F. Treagust, Mauro Mocerino, Roy Tasker

Summary: This study reviewed 64 studies on the use of immersive virtual reality (IVR) in science education. It found that educators commonly adopted IVR to aid visualization of abstract concepts and enhance the learning experience. However, IVR applications tended to focus on sensory and actional features, neglecting narrative and social features. Learning theories did not play a strong role in the design, implementation, and evaluation of IVR-based learning.

Analysis of students' diagrams of water molecules in snowflakes to reveal their conceptual understanding of hydrogen bonds

Henry Matovu, Mihye Won, David Franklin Treagust, Mauro Mocerino, Dewi Ayu Kencana Ungu, Chin-Chung Tsai, Roy Tasker

Summary: Recent studies have found a growing trend of using student-generated diagrams for science teaching and research. However, many educators tend to use diagrams to explore students' perceptions of scientists and their work rather than explore conceptual understanding of abstract concepts. This study used diagrams to investigate students' conceptual understanding of hydrogen bonds in snowflakes and found that student-generated diagrams can provide a powerful way to understand students' conceptions of abstract science concepts.

Change in students' explanation of the shape of snowflakes after collaborative immersive virtual reality

Henry Matovu, Mihye Won, David Franklin Treagust, Dewi Ayu Kencana Ungu, Mauro Mocerino, Chin-Chung Tsai, Roy Tasker

Summary: In recent years, chemistry educators have been using immersive virtual reality (IVR) technology to help students visualize molecular interactions. However, most educational studies on IVR have focused on its usability and user perceptions, neglecting its impact on improving conceptual understanding. This study used interviews and diagram-drawing tasks to explore how students' conceptual understanding of hydrogen bonds and snowflake shapes changed through a collaborative IVR experience. The results showed a significant improvement in students' understanding of the nature of hydrogen bonds in snowflakes. This study suggests that collaborative IVR can effectively help students visualize molecular interactions and develop a more coherent understanding.

A review of using multilevel modeling in e-learning research

Hung-Ming Lin, Jiun-Yu Wu, Jyh-Chong Liang, Yuan-Hsuan Lee, Pin-Chi Huang, Oi-Man Kwok, Chin-Chung Tsai

Summary: Improving e-learning involves complex research designs and multilevel modeling techniques to capture learners' perceptions, comprehension, and behavior. A review of 76 studies in major e-learning journals revealed that two-level models and random-intercept models are commonly used. Most studies included students as sampling units of analysis in Level 1 and used cognitive learning as the dependent variable. Based on the review results, suggestions and potential applications of multilevel modeling in e-learning studies are provided.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review of contemporary digital reading research, using co-citation network analysis and content analysis to identify key topics, trends, and features. The study identified three mainstreams of digital reading research, namely differences between print books and e-books in reading comprehension, adolescents' habits and preferences in digital reading and their digital reading literacy, and analysis of reading behaviors and use of interactive learning books. Most studies employed quantitative or mixed methods, focusing on evaluation through tests and questionnaires, and did not explore specific application domains or learning strategies. Affective aspects, cognition, learning behavior, and causation were the main focuses of research on digital reading. Key research topics in digital reading included engagement, digital media, and digital literacy. The study provides directions for future research and digital reading education.

Exploring the relationship between Chinese pre-service teachers' epistemic beliefs and their perceptions of technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK)

Xi Bei Xiong, Chai Ching Sing, Chin-Chung Tsai, Jyh-Chong Liang

Summary: This study examines the differences in perceived TPACK among pre-service teachers based on different clusters of their epistemic beliefs. The results show that pre-service teachers in the Positivist and Partial Constructivist clusters have stronger perceptions of their TPACK compared to those in the Constructivist cluster. This suggests that a nuanced approach is required to develop pre-service teachers' TPACK based on their epistemic profiles.
