Summary: We conducted a prospective cohort study to investigate the association between mild or asymptomatic prenatal SARS-CoV-2 infection and preterm live birth. Pregnant individuals were monitored for SARS-CoV-2 infection using RT-PCR or serological confirmation from August 2020 to October 2021. Cox proportional-hazards regression was used to assess the association between prenatal SARS-CoV-2 infection and preterm birth. Among 954 individuals with a live birth, there were 185 (19%) with prenatal SARS-CoV-2 infection and 123 (13%) with preterm birth. The adjusted hazard ratio for the association between SARS-CoV-2 infection and preterm birth was 1.28 (95% confidence interval 0.82-1.99, p = 0.28), although the results were not statistically significant.

Summary: This study investigated the association between pregnancy complications and total and cause-specific mortality, as well as the differences between Black and White pregnant participants. The results showed that Black pregnant participants had a higher incidence of pregnancy complications, and the associations between different complications and mortality risk differed between Black and White participants.

Summary: Reproductive issues are a growing global concern, and there is increasing interest in understanding the relationship between microbiota and reproductive health. Stable microbiota communities exist in various parts of the reproductive system, and dysbiosis can have detrimental effects on gamete quality, embryo development, and disease susceptibility. A healthy microbiota, on the other hand, can protect against pathogens, improve reproductive potential, and reduce adverse pregnancy outcomes. This review explores the effects and mechanisms of microbiota on reproduction, factors influencing microbiota composition, and potential applications in reproductive disorder treatment and detection.

Summary: In addition to low birth weight and intrauterine growth restriction, prematurity is a major problem in modern neonatology. This study found that there is a relationship between early pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and the risk of preterm delivery, with overweight and obese women being more likely to have extremely and very preterm births.

Summary: The presence of antiphospholipid syndrome is associated with a poor prognosis for both the mother and fetus in patients with hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count syndrome. Patients with antiphospholipid syndrome had lower live birth rates, higher rates of premature birth, and required more induced abortions compared to patients without antiphospholipid syndrome. Additionally, patients with antiphospholipid syndrome had higher rates of intensive care unit admission. None of the mothers in the study died.

Summary: HMGB1 plays a crucial role in early pregnancy and parturition, but its tight regulation is essential to prevent pregnancy-related pathologies. Excessive HMGB1 levels can lead to pregnancy failure, preterm labor, and other issues, highlighting the need for further research on its potential as a biomarker and therapeutic target.

Summary: This study examines the impact of preterm birth and size-for-gestational age on stillbirths using six different "newborn types". The findings reveal that nearly three-quarters of stillbirths are preterm, while one-fifth are small-for-gestational-age. The combination of preterm and small-for-gestational-age births is associated with the highest stillbirth rates.

Summary: Prenatal maternal stress is associated with negative pregnancy and infant outcomes, and can be transmitted across generations. In this study, we used rat models to investigate the effects of gestational chronic variable stress (CVS) and found that CVS induced inflammatory changes in the uterus and transgenerationally transmitted stress markers. An enriched environment (EE) did not mitigate these effects, although F2 offspring reared in EE had increased birth weights. This research highlights the importance of addressing prenatal maternal stress for optimal fetal development.

Summary: Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a leading cause of blindness in premature infants. This study investigated the relationship between inflammatory markers and ROP development in extremely premature and very premature neonates. The researchers found that elevated levels of interleukin-6 and lactate dehydrogenase were associated with ROP in extremely premature infants, while C-reactive protein levels were higher in very premature infants. Furthermore, umbilical cord inflammation and the severity of ROP were positively correlated. The study suggests that inflammatory markers could potentially be used as biomarkers for ROP risk prediction.

Summary: The aim of this study was to assess the impact of COVID-19 infection on patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis (DLC) in terms of acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF), chronic liver failure acute decompensation (CLIF-AD), hospitalization, and mortality. In this retrospective study, patients with known DLC and COVID-19 were analyzed to compare the development of ACLF, CLIF-AD, hospitalization length, and independent factors of mortality with a non-COVID-19 DLC group. The study found that COVID-19 significantly influenced disease progression in patients with DLC in terms of associated infections, hospitalization length, and mortality. Rating: 8/10.

Summary: Existing studies suggest that adequate vitamin D levels improve the prognosis and outcomes of SARS-CoV-2 infections, but the effect of vitamin D supplementation on gestational hypertension during pregnancy is still controversial. This research aimed to evaluate whether there are significant differences in vitamin D levels during pregnancy among pregnant women who develop gestational hypertension after SARS-CoV-2 infection. The study found that low vitamin D levels and first-trimester SARS-CoV-2 infection may play a role in the development of gestational hypertension.

Summary: The optimal timing of delivery in cases of early onset fetal growth restriction is challenging to determine due to the opposing risks of stillbirth and prematurity. This study aimed to assess the likelihood of neonatal complications based on the time of birth, using Doppler parameters in fetuses with early onset fetal growth restriction. The findings suggest that infants delivered at the onset of umbilical arteries absent/reversed end-diastolic flow are less likely to develop intraventricular hemorrhage grades III/IV and bronchopulmonary dysplasia.

Summary: Premature birth is a global health issue with high mortality risk, emotional and financial difficulties, and long-term health issues. Identifying predictors for preterm birth is crucial for improving obstetric care, and non-invasive serum parameters like HALP score, PT, aPTT, D-dimers, and FAR can provide significant prediction capabilities. These findings highlight the importance of assessing these parameters in at-risk pregnant women.
