Short-term clinical trials of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) as add-on therapy in patients with schizophrenia revealed mixed results. The majority of these studies used an 8- to 12-week intervention based on ethyl-eicosapentaenoic acid. A randomized placebo-controlled trial was designed to compare the efficacy of 26-week intervention, composed of either 2.2 g/day of n-3 PUFA, or olive oil placebo, with regard to symptom severity in first-episode schizophrenia patients. Seventy-one patients (aged 16-35) were enrolled in the study and randomly assigned to the study arms. The primary outcome measure of the clinical evaluation was schizophrenia symptom severity change measured by the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). Mixed models repeated measures analysis revealed significant differences between the study arms regarding total PANSS score change favouring n-3 PUFA (p = 0.016; effect size (ES) = 0.29). A fifty-percent improvement in symptom severity was achieved significantly more frequently in the n-3 PUFA group than in the placebo group (69.4 vs 40.0%; p = 0.017). N-3 PUFA intervention was also associated with an improvement in general psychopathology, measured by means of PANSS (p = 0.009; ES = 0.32), depressive symptoms (p = 0.006; ES = 0.34), the level of functioning (p = 0.01; ES = 0.31) and clinical global impression (p = 0.046; ES = 0.29). The findings suggest that 6-month intervention with n-3 PUFA may be a valuable add-on therapy able to decrease the intensity of symptoms and improve the level of functioning in first episode schizophrenia patients. Higher order language impairments can predict the transition of ultrahigh risk state to psychosis-An empirical study

Agnieszka Pawelczyk, Emilia Lojek, Natalia Zurner, Magdalena Kotlicka-Antczak, Tomasz Pawelczyk

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the role of higher order language skills in predicting the onset of psychosis, specifically looking at aspects such as non-literal language, humour, and prosody. The results showed that deficits in humour comprehension and metaphor explanation could potentially predict conversion to psychosis. Further research is needed to explore the relationship between pragmatic language skills and abstract measures in individuals at ultra-high risk for psychosis.

Summary: Higher-order language disturbances in first-episode schizophrenia may be attributed to white matter tract abnormalities. The study revealed correlations between reduced fractional anisotropy in specific white matter regions and deficits in pragmatic language skills among patients with schizophrenia.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the influence of overall maternal dietary quality and inflammatory potential during preconceptional and antenatal periods on birth outcomes. The findings suggest that a low-quality and pro-inflammatory maternal diet during pregnancy is associated with lower offspring birth weight and higher risk of offspring being born small-for-gestational-age (SGA).

Thoracic osteophyte as a cause of symptomatic greater splanchnic nerve compression. Case report

J. Jankowski, A. Pawelczyk, M. Radek

Summary: Thoracic osteophytes are a common feature of degenerative spine disease, and it is rare for osteophyte overgrowth on the anterior surface of the thoracic spine to cause compression of vital structures and symptoms. This study reports a case of a 39-year-old man with thoracic and upper abdominal pain for two years, who was admitted to the neurosurgery ward after being seen by multiple specialists. Thoracic spine MRI and CT scans revealed osteophytes on the anterolateral right side at the T8-T9 level, which were identified as a possible cause of the symptoms. Surgery was performed to remove the osteophytes, resulting in improvement of the patient's symptoms.

Summary: The study showed that supplementation of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) can significantly reduce the frequency of MetS, especially in first-episode schizophrenia patients. EPA + DHA were found to have more pronounced effects on patients mainly treated with olanzapine, leading to reductions in total cholesterol and blood glucose levels.

Summary: The study found that most pregnant women in Poland do not meet the requirement for essential elements and vitamins through diet, with a high proportion using supplements. Women with higher education levels, leisure time, and engagement in physical activity are more likely to meet the average demand for most nutrients, while factors such as low BMI, higher stress levels, and late medical visits are associated with lower compliance with recommendations. Higher socioeconomic status is correlated with higher selenium concentration, BMI over 25 and multiparity with higher copper concentration, and older age with higher vitamin E concentration in plasma.

Cervical Paraspinal Chordoma: A Literature Review with a Novel Case Report

Redwan Jabbar, Jakub Jankowski, Agnieszka Pawelczyk, Bartosz Szmyd, Julia Solek, Olaf Pierzak, Maciej Wojdyn, Maciej Radek

Summary: Chordomas are rare malignant bone tumors, primarily occurring in the sacrococcygeal region and the base of the skull. These tumors grow slowly and encase the surrounding vascular and nerve structures before becoming symptomatic. Patients with advanced chordoma have a poor prognosis due to local recurrence and infiltration into adjacent bone and tissues. Systemic chemotherapy options have limited effectiveness in treating recurrent chordomas, leading to the proposal of new combinations of targeted therapies with radiotherapy. This case study highlights the effectiveness of radical surgical resection as the mainstay treatment for chordomas, and discusses neuroimaging, diagnosis, and alternative treatment options for chordoma using currently available targeted therapies and forthcoming treatment strategies.

Hai-Yang Wang, Lin Zhang, Bei-Yan Guan, Shi-Yao Wang, Cui-Hong Zhang, Ming-Fei Ni, Yan-Wei Miao, Bing-Wei Zhang

Summary: This study investigates the association between cognitive reappraisal and panic disorder (PD), and finds that PD patients have weakened functional connectivity between the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and the amygdala, which is associated with the severity of PD symptoms. Additionally, cognitive reappraisal is negatively correlated with PD severity, and the PFC-amygdala functional connectivity plays a mediating role in this association.

Summary: Major depressive disorder is a prevalent condition worldwide, but the proportion of patients receiving treatment has not increased. Biomarkers related to drug-treatment responses can be used to monitor the effectiveness of medication.
