Summary: Current guidelines recommend regular consumption of fat-rich fish to obtain sufficient omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids for preventing cardiovascular events. However, the cardiovascular benefits of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in patients with diabetes are uncertain. This meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials found that omega-3 fatty acid supplementation reduces cardiovascular disease risk in patients with diabetes, with eicosapentaenoic acid showing a significant effect. Further well-designed trials are needed to evaluate safety and effects on atrial fibrillation.

Summary: Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids play a key role in heart-healthy diet, and can be obtained through fatty fish consumption or fish oil supplementation. They not only treat hypertriglyceridemia, but also prevent cardiovascular events, with additional benefits such as reducing inflammation and improving plaque stability.

Adequate intake of Ω-3 fatty acids can improve brain function and neuronal function, reduce depressive symptoms, and have fewer side effects compared to antidepressants.

Summary: This study aims to estimate the amount of n-3 LC-PUFA provided by commonly consumed fishes, shrimps, and mollusks, to conduct a risk-benefit analysis of fish consumption. Consuming 2-3 servings of a variety of fishery products per week can help meet recommended n-3 LC-PUFA levels while maintaining a balance to avoid potential risks from contaminants.

Summary: Theoretical evidence and previous studies suggest that oral nutrient supplementation with n-3 fatty acids may have the potential to lower disease activity indicators and NSAID uptake for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, pooled analyses reveal that n-3 supplementation has small effects in reducing pain, tender and swollen joint count, and NSAID intake. The certainty of the evidence is mostly of very low/low quality. Previous findings may have been biased due to inadequate blinding of interventions.

Summary: This study characterized the fatty acid profiles in the erythrocyte membrane of pediatric patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) receiving high-dose DHA supplementation. It found that DHA supplementation improved n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly DHA and EPA, while decreasing n-6 PUFAs, mainly arachidonic acid. The long-term administration of DHA was safe and well tolerated, but essential fatty acid alterations could not be fully normalized with this treatment.

Summary: The study found that consuming oil rich in DHA could improve wake efficiency and latency but may lead to feeling less energetic and rested. On the other hand, consuming oil rich in EPA could improve sleep efficiency but decrease time in bed and total sleep time. The results suggest that n-3 PUFAs have positive effects on sleep quality, with differential effects observed between DHA and EPA.

Summary: This study investigated the associations between maternal dietary habits, infant feeding patterns, and serum levels of DHA and other LCPUFAs in 5-6-month-old infants in Japan. It found that frequent consumption of Blue-back fish and/or White fish by lactating mothers, as well as prioritizing breastfeeding, can effectively increase infants' serum DHA levels.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the role of higher order language skills in predicting the onset of psychosis, specifically looking at aspects such as non-literal language, humour, and prosody. The results showed that deficits in humour comprehension and metaphor explanation could potentially predict conversion to psychosis. Further research is needed to explore the relationship between pragmatic language skills and abstract measures in individuals at ultra-high risk for psychosis.

Summary: Thoracic osteophytes are a common feature of degenerative spine disease, and it is rare for osteophyte overgrowth on the anterior surface of the thoracic spine to cause compression of vital structures and symptoms. This study reports a case of a 39-year-old man with thoracic and upper abdominal pain for two years, who was admitted to the neurosurgery ward after being seen by multiple specialists. Thoracic spine MRI and CT scans revealed osteophytes on the anterolateral right side at the T8-T9 level, which were identified as a possible cause of the symptoms. Surgery was performed to remove the osteophytes, resulting in improvement of the patient's symptoms.

Summary: The study found that most pregnant women in Poland do not meet the requirement for essential elements and vitamins through diet, with a high proportion using supplements. Women with higher education levels, leisure time, and engagement in physical activity are more likely to meet the average demand for most nutrients, while factors such as low BMI, higher stress levels, and late medical visits are associated with lower compliance with recommendations. Higher socioeconomic status is correlated with higher selenium concentration, BMI over 25 and multiparity with higher copper concentration, and older age with higher vitamin E concentration in plasma.

Summary: Chordomas are rare malignant bone tumors, primarily occurring in the sacrococcygeal region and the base of the skull. These tumors grow slowly and encase the surrounding vascular and nerve structures before becoming symptomatic. Patients with advanced chordoma have a poor prognosis due to local recurrence and infiltration into adjacent bone and tissues. Systemic chemotherapy options have limited effectiveness in treating recurrent chordomas, leading to the proposal of new combinations of targeted therapies with radiotherapy. This case study highlights the effectiveness of radical surgical resection as the mainstay treatment for chordomas, and discusses neuroimaging, diagnosis, and alternative treatment options for chordoma using currently available targeted therapies and forthcoming treatment strategies.
