Southern corn rust (SCR) is a significant threat to maize production worldwide. Efficient breeding and deployment of resistant hybrids are crucial for achieving durable control of SCR. The recent cloning of two SCR resistance genes (RppC and RppK) and their corresponding Avr genes (AvrRppC and AvrRppK) by two research teams (Chen et al. and Deng et al.) will accelerate SCR resistance breeding.
Southern corn rust (SCR) severely threatens maize production world-wide. Achieving durable control of SCR requires efficient breeding and deployment of resistant hy-brids. Recently, two research teams (Chen et al. and Deng et al.) cloned two SCR resistance genes (RppC and RppK) and the cognate Avr genes (AvrRppC and AvrRppK), which will accelerate SCR resis-tance breeding.
