Summary: This qualitative study aimed to understand patients' experiences in virtual, group-based gut-directed hypnotherapy (GDH) in two different institutions. The results showed that most patients were supportive of the group and virtual formats of GDH and reported positive outcomes for GI symptoms and other physical and mental health conditions. Therefore, virtual, group-based GDH is a feasible treatment option for improving patients' health.

Summary: Digital gut-directed hypnotherapy (GDH) treatment program can improve symptoms of IBS, including abdominal pain and stool problems. There was no significant difference in effectiveness between digital GDH and digital muscle relaxation (MR), but the GDH treatment group had more abdominal pain responders.

Summary: This study conducted a secondary analysis of gut-directed hypnotherapy outcomes in patients with refractory IBS and found that patients with a higher burden of gastrointestinal and extraintestinal symptoms are most likely to benefit from this treatment. Clinical assessment of gastrointestinal, somatic, and psychological symptom profiles may play a role in selecting patients for gut-directed hypnotherapy.

Summary: Gut-directed hypnotherapy (GDH) is a highly effective behavioral therapy recommended for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). GDH has been recognized as a valuable addition to integrated care alongside medical and dietary approaches. Recent innovations, such as smartphone app-delivered GDH, have improved access to this therapy despite low adherence rates.

Summary: This study examines the impact of interface aesthetics on user performance in a smartphone app context. The results indicate that aesthetics have a significant positive effect on users' perceived usability and aesthetics. Furthermore, interface aesthetics also positively impact performance, as measured by the number of correctly answered questions. Therefore, visually appealing smartphone web apps enhance users' subjective experience and objective performance compared to unaesthetic apps, providing stakeholders with quantifiable value and competitive advantage.

Summary: This study evaluated the validity and reliability of the 2kmFIT-App for estimating cardiorespiratory fitness on Android and iOS mobile operating systems. The results showed that the app was effective for estimating CRF on Android but not iOS. Despite some limitations like the time required for HR calculation or environmental factors, it is considered a new, scientifically valid and reliable tool.

Summary: Research suggests that smartphone use is associated with various aspects of physical, psychological, and performance dimensions. This study tested a self-nudging app called "one sec" that aims to reduce mindless use of selected target apps on smartphones. The app interferes with the opening of target apps through pop-up messages and short waiting time, leading to a 57% decrease in actual app usage after six weeks.

Summary: Abdominal pain is a core symptom of IBS, with visceral hypersensitivity being a key pathophysiological mechanism. Treatments for IBS pain include non-pharmacological approaches such as diet modifications, probiotics, and psychological interventions, as well as pharmacological options like tricyclics and newer medications. Emerging treatment options include gut-brain neuromodulators, neurostimulation, and novel psychological approaches.

Summary: Histamine produced by gut bacteria plays a role in abdominal pain and serves as a potential therapeutic target for treating abdominal pain in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). A dietary advice using a FODMAP-lowering smartphone application is shown to be more effective than a spasmolytic agent as a first-line treatment option for IBS in primary care. Another over-the-counter product called enterosgel improves abdominal pain and diarrhea symptoms in patients with IBS.

Summary: The proliferation of heavy metal ions in water is a serious problem that is escalating. Rapid detection of these ions in an aqueous solution is of immense significance. To address the growing concentration of heavy metal ions, a facile and cost-effective sensing scheme based on intensity modulation is proposed. The scheme, comprising of a smartphone, light source, and analyte, can detect heavy metal ions at ppb level with an average limit of detection (LOD) of approximately 0.5 ppb. Additionally, the scheme shows a recovery level of approximately 95% when assessing spiked tap water, indicating its applicability. Overall, this sensing scheme with minimal logistics has the potential to replace complex analysis procedures using bulky and sophisticated instruments.

Summary: Despite the popularity of mental health-related smartphone apps, weak user engagement has hindered their impact on the mental health landscape. Integrating these apps into traditional therapeutic models seems to improve clinical outcomes, but questions remain about the relationship between app engagement and the coach or clinician. This study examines patient app engagement patterns and clinical outcomes from a digital clinic pilot, finding that app engagement does not correlate with outcomes but satisfaction with app and clinician/coach engagement does have an impact.
