Summary: This study aimed to explore the associations between lead (Pb), arsenic (As), and cadmium (Cd) exposure and cognitive function, as well as the moderating effects of selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu). The results showed that Cd and Pb were negatively associated with cognitive function, while Se exhibited a positive association. Furthermore, Se attenuated the negative effects of Pb or the As, Cd, and Pb mixture on cognitive function. Further prospective studies are needed to confirm these findings.

This study aimed to investigate whether selenium could protect against the pulmonary toxicity of cadmium and lead. The results showed that higher levels of selenium and copper were associated with better cognitive function in the elderly. Summary: A new method was developed for quantifying Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in Chromium-enriched yeast, using ion chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Cr(III) and Cr(VI) were extracted using ultrasound-assisted weakly alkaline EDTA solution combined with boiling, and separated on two successive anion-exchange columns. The method was sensitive, accurate, and precise, with no Cr(VI) species found in CrY.

Summary: As the use of herbs increases worldwide, there are more reports of interactions between herbs and drugs. The complex active components of herbs inevitably affect the pharmacokinetics of chemical drugs in vivo. The expression of drug transporters is closely related to the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of drugs. When herbs inhibit or induce the expression of transporters, it can result in changes in substrate pharmacokinetics, affecting the efficacy and toxicity of drugs. This article summarizes the tissue distribution and physiological functions of drug transporters, analyzes the effects of herbs on drug transporters, and discusses the possible mechanisms of herb-drug interactions, providing ideas and references for safe clinical drug use.

Summary: Chromium (Cr) is essential for carbohydrate, lipid, and protein metabolisms in humans and animals. Chromium-enriched yeast (CrY) is a commonly used dietary supplement but its pharmacokinetics remains unclear. This study found that CrY was rapidly absorbed into the blood and slowly eliminated after oral administration in rats, which could lead to the accumulation of chromium in vivo.
