Summary: Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a condition where abdominal contents herniate into the thoracic cavity during fetal development, potentially causing lung hypoplasia and severe pulmonary hypertension. Metabolomics analysis of fetal CDH lungs revealed changes related to oxidative stress, nucleotide synthesis, amino acid metabolism, glycerophospholipid metabolism, and glucose metabolism. These findings provide insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying CDH pathophysiology and may lead to new treatment targets for CDH patients.

Summary: Tracheal occlusion (TO) is a fetal treatment option for congenital diaphragmatic hernia, aiming to reduce lung hypoplasia and hypertension. However, the effect of TO on lung pressure was unknown. In this study, an implantable device was developed for real-time wireless monitoring and long-term logging of lung pressure in ovine fetuses. The device showed high accuracy and stability, successfully detecting pressure changes caused by TO.

Summary: This study assessed whether different formulas used to calculate expected lung volumes for congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) patients could impact the lung volume percentages and thus affect perinatal counseling. The results showed that the choice of formula had a significant impact on the predicted survival rates, with some patients having a 25% chance of survival and others a 95% chance, depending on the method used. This highlights the importance of accurate lung volume calculations in CDH patients for providing informed counseling to families.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the predictors of third trimester fetal anthropometric parameters in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and examine whether these predictors were dependent on fetal sex. The results showed that prepregnancy BMI and GWG were associated with fetal anthropometry parameters. In female fetuses, only GWG was related to fetal abdominal circumference. However, in male fetuses, prepregnancy BMI and GWG were associated with fetal weight and abdominal circumference. High prepregnancy BMI and GWG were associated with increased risk of adverse fetal outcomes.

Summary: This study aimed to propose a new pathological classification and prognostic model for resected stage I invasive adenocarcinoma. Results showed certain subtypes in the new pathological reclassification and stage IB were independent predictors for poorer recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS). The risk model for RFS had an advantage in early recurrence prediction compared to TNM classification, while no significant difference was observed in long-term RFS or OS.

Summary: Fryns syndrome is an autosomal recessive multiple congenital anomaly syndrome characterized by diaphragmatic defects and secondary lung hypoplasia. Despite being first reported in 1979, the exact etiology of the syndrome remains uncertain, and prenatal presentation of these anomalies may require consideration of defects in glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchor synthesis.

Summary: Noninvasive prenatal diagnosis (NIPD) is a method of detecting genetic disorders related to the fetus before birth by analyzing markers in the peripheral blood of pregnant women. Fetal-nucleated red blood cells (fNRBCs) can be used as biomarkers for NIPD due to their unique ability to carry the complete genetic information of the fetus. Recent advances in NIPD technologies are focused on isolating and analyzing fNRBCs, using both conventional and novel methods such as micro-/nanomaterials and microfluidic chips. The identification and clinical diagnostic potential of fNRBCs are also discussed, along with the challenges and future directions of using fNRBCs in NIPD treatment guidelines.

Summary: Lung organogenesis is a highly coordinated process regulated by a network of signaling pathways, which determine the formation of a functional organ. Abnormalities such as bronchial malformations can affect lung function. This review focuses on uncovering the molecular mechanisms underlying normal/abnormal lung growth and development and their impact on postnatal survival.

Summary: The study showed that a high MSAFP level in ONTD fetuses is associated with mid-gestation ventriculomegaly, while moderately high and normal MSAFP levels are less correlated. There were no significant differences between the groups in terms of lesion type, size of myeloschisis lesion, anatomical level, or volume of myelomeningocele sac. Myeloschisis cases with normal MSAFP had a larger surface area compared to those with moderately high MSAFP.

Summary: The hyperintense bronchus sign (HBS) in fetal MRI is frequently associated with airway obstruction, particularly before gestational age 26 weeks. It can be detected in various congenital lung malformations and has a higher diagnostic accuracy in fetal MRI scans obtained until 26 weeks of gestational age compared to those obtained after 26 weeks.

Summary: The study aimed to develop a quantifiable approach to identify a dome shape of the repaired diaphragm using post-operative chest radiograph and to determine if a dome-shaped prosthetic patch repair is associated with a decreased rate of CDH recurrence. The results showed that a dome-shaped repair may reduce recurrence following prosthetic patch repair of congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

Summary: This study examined changes in fetal lung volume and their association with infant survival and ECMO need in CDH patients after FETO. The results showed that fetuses with a post-FETO increase in O/E TLV of less than 10% had lower survival rates and higher ECMO use compared to those with an increase of 10% or more.
