Responsive multifunctional hydrogels emulating the chronic wounds healing cascade for skin repair

The harsh microenvironment and poor tissue regeneration ability of chronic diabetic wounds make them difficult to cure. A new approach using smart-responsive multi-functional hydrogels has been developed to improve the healing of such wounds. These hydrogels can quickly respond to the acidic environment of diabetic wounds and release multiple drugs in a sequential manner. In vitro and in vivo experiments have shown that these hydrogels effectively eliminate bacteria, relieve inflammation, and promote angiogenesis, thereby accelerating the closure of chronic diabetic wounds.
It remains challenging to cure chronic diabetic wounds due to its' harsh microenvironment and poor tissue regeneration ability. At present, bacteria elimination, inflammatory response suppression and angiogenesis orderly render an important paradigm for chronic diabetic wound treatment. Herein, smart-responsive multi-functional hydrogels were developed to improve chronic diabetic wound healing, which could quickly respond to the acidic environment of the diabetic wound site and mediate multistage sequential delivery of silver and curcumin-loaded polydopamine nanoparticles (PDA@Ag&Cur NPs) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). PDA@Ag&Cur NPs and VEGF endowed the hydrogels with antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and angiogenesis performances, respectively. The in vitro and in vivo experiments confirmed that our multistage drug delivery hydrogels could effectively eliminate bacteria, relieve inflammatory response, and induce angiogenesis, hence accelerating the closure of chronic diabetic wounds. In conclusion, we highlighted the importance of multistage manipulation in wound healing and offered a combinatorial therapeutic strategy to sequentially deliver drugs exactly aiming at the dynamic wound healing stages.

Summary: A self-referenced phase generation carrier algorithm is proposed in this paper to theoretically eliminate the influence related to modulation depth, light intensity, and carrier phase delay. The algorithm takes the orthogonal components as reference signals and divides them by their own differential signals in order to eliminate the aforementioned parameters in real-time. The algorithm was implemented and achieved a large dynamic range, high phase resolution, and stable performance.

Superhydrophobic and easy-to-clean full-packing nanopatterned microlens array with high-quality imaging

Summary: A superhydrophobic and easy-to-clean full-packing nanopatterned microlens array (npMLA) with high-quality imaging is prepared by thermal reflow together with sputter deposition. The full-packing npMLA shows improved imaging quality, signal-to-noise ratio, and transparency compared to the traditional MLA prepared by thermal reflow. It also exhibits a superhydrophobic property and can be easily cleaned using nitrogen blowing and deionized water. The full-packing npMLA has potential for various outdoor applications.

Additionally, new citrinin derivatives with higher binding affinities were designed.

Graphene-based zoom metalens adaptive imaging system

Summary: This article proposes a definition adaptive imaging system based on a graphene zoom metalens, which combines a tunable metalens and an image clarity detection algorithm. Compared with traditional imaging systems, the focus position of the metalens can be adjusted arbitrarily by changing the graphene chemical potential rather than the physical structure. Furthermore, an edge detection algorithm is used to detect the image definition and determine the appropriate focal length of the lens. The system will automatically adjust the focus of the metalens until a satisfactory image is obtained according to the predetermined strategy.

Summary: In this study, we searched for an axion-like particle (ALP) a in the process psi (3686) -> pi+pi-J/psi, J/psi -> gamma a, a -> gamma gamma. We analyzed a data sample of (2.71 + 0.01) x 10^9 psi (3686) events collected by the BESIII detector. No significant ALP signal was observed, and upper limits were set on the branching fraction of J/psi -> gamma a and the ALP-photon coupling constant ga gamma gamma at 95% confidence level. The constraints on the ALP-photon coupling are the most stringent to date for the mass range of 0.165 < ma < 1.468 GeV/c2.

Summary: This study comprehensively analyzed the key components and pharmacological mechanisms of the Chinese medicinal combination AC in the treatment of CRC through network metabolomics, network pharmacology, molecular docking, and biological methods. The results showed that AC effectively inhibited tumor growth and metastasis and regulated metabolism and immunity in a CRC mouse model, suggesting it as a potential alternative treatment option for CRC.

Anti-Oxidative and Anti-Aging Effects of Probiotic Fermented Ginseng by Modulating Gut Microbiota and Metabolites in Caenorhabditis elegans

Summary: The antioxidative and antiaging abilities of probiotic fermented ginseng (PG) were evaluated in Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans). The results showed that PG significantly enhanced the lifespan of C. elegans and improved their resistance to heat stress and acute oxidative stress. The mechanism behind these activities was found to involve up-regulation of antioxidative enzymes and down-regulation of oxidative stress markers. Furthermore, PG was found to modulate gut microbiota composition, increase the abundance of beneficial bacteria, and regulate metabolic pathways related to antioxidant and antiaging activities in C. elegans.

Experimental and numerical investigation on the uniformity of nanosecond pulsed dielectric barrier discharge influenced by pulse parameters

Summary: Nanosecond pulsed dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) is used to investigate the effects of pulse parameters on discharge uniformity of Ar DBD. Experimental and numerical results reveal that the electric field intensity and space particles' density are responsible for the discharge mode transition from non-uniform to uniform and then back to non-uniform. The findings contribute to understanding the mechanism of ns pulsed DBD mode transition and realizing controllable and uniform plasma sources at atmospheric pressure.

The influence of bank governance structure on green credit

Summary: The introduction of the green credit policy provides an important solution to the contradiction between economic development and environmental protection. Using fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA), this research analyzes the impact of bank governance structure on green credit by selecting antecedent variables such as ownership concentration, independence of the Board, executive incentives, activity of the Supervisory Board, degree of market competition, and loan quality. The study finds that ownership structure is the most significant factor affecting green credit, and achieving high-level green credit relies on high ownership concentration and good loan quality. The research conclusions are beneficial for improving the green credit level of Chinese banks and enhancing their environmental reputation.

Enhancing the asymmetric reduction activity of ene-reductases for the synthesis of a brivaracetam precursor

Summary: In this study, the enzyme OYE2 was found to have strict stereoselectivity but unsatisfactory activity in the synthesis of brivaracetam. Mutants Y82W and T37C were developed, which showed increased hydrogenation activity. Molecular dynamics simulation indicated that these mutants could improve the efficiency of electron transfer and hydrogen transfer. This study provides a foundation for a simplified one-step route in producing the chiral precursor brivaracetam.

Summary: The impact of Ag and Ag-Cu codoping on the structure and optical performance of ZnO composite graphene (ZnO/G) was investigated. The photoelectric properties of G, ZnO, and different doped ZnO/G materials were analyzed using first-principles calculations. Ag-Cu codoping affected the freecarrier concentration of the ZnO composite under UV illumination, resulting in a change in the transmission spectrum of the sensor. The Ag-Cu co-doped ZnO modification coated with SDTMS showed improved UV light-absorption properties of the sensors, indicating its potential in future UV detection applications.

Highly efficient endosperm and pericarp protoplast preparation system for transient transformation of endosperm-related genes in wheat

Summary: In this study, a method for extracting protoplasts from wheat endosperm and pericarp tissues was successfully developed, and transcription factors TaABI5 and amyloplast protein TaSSIIIa were successfully transcribed and localized in the protoplasts using genetic transformation. This is of great importance for further investigating the functions and regulations of genes related to endosperm development and differentiation in plants.

Polymer mechanochemistry in drug delivery: From controlled release to precise activation

Summary: Controlled drug delivery systems that can respond to mechanical force offer a unique solution for on-demand drug activation and release. Among various mechanical stimuli, ultrasound (US) has advantages in achieving spatiotemporally controlled drug release. Traditional US-triggered drug release relies on heat-induced phase transitions or chemical transformations, while the cutting-edge approach of Sonopharmacology leverages polymer mechanochemistry. The remaining challenges and potential future directions in this field are also discussed.

Co-delivery of drugs by adhesive transdermal patches equipped with dissolving microneedles for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis

Summary: This study developed CP-loaded CS microcapsules to enhance the oral bioavailability of CP through controlled gastrointestinal delivery. The optimized microcapsules exhibited desirable physicochemical properties, showed anti-photoaging effects via antioxidant activity, and achieved controlled release in the gastrointestinal tract. This research provides a simple and economical approach for enhancing the oral bioavailability of CP for customized bioactive compound administration.

Pressure-sensitive multivesicular liposomes as a smart drug-delivery system for high-altitude pulmonary edema

Animal experiments showed that this system provides better protection for lung tissues and respiratory function, reducing the occurrence of pulmonary edema.

Biofunctional coacervate-based artificial protocells with membrane-like and cytoplasm-like structures for the treatment of persistent hyperuricemia

Summary: Coacervate droplets formed through liquid-liquid phase separation have potential as delivery vesicles for therapeutics. However, their lack of physiological stability and membranes are challenges. In this study, polylysine-polynucleotide complex coacervate droplets with favorable stability were formulated to concentrate molecules and nanoparticles. Phospholipid membranes were further coated on the droplets to create coacervate-based artificial protocells (ArtPC) with membrane-like structures. These biofunctional ArtPC effectively reduced blood uric acid levels and prevented renal injuries.

Lipid-like gemcitabine diester-loaded liposomes for improved chemotherapy of pancreatic cancer

Summary: Four novel lipid-like GEM diesters were synthesized and encapsulated into liposomes to improve the antitumor efficacy of Gemcitabine. The liposomes loaded with dimyristoyl GEM (LipodmGEM) showed enhanced cellular uptake, improved inhibition of cell migration, and a greatly extended half-life compared to free Gemcitabine. LipodmGEM successfully enriched the drug in the tumor and exhibited excellent anticancer efficacy in vivo with negligible systemic toxicity.

Mitochondria-targeted SkQ1 nanoparticles for dry eye disease: Inhibiting NLRP3 inflammasome activation by preventing mitochondrial DNA oxidation

Summary: This study revealed that robust ROS can oxidize mitochondrial DNA (ox-mtDNA) and cause its release into the cytosol, resulting in the activation of NLRP3 inflammasome. By using the mitochondria-targeted antioxidant SkQ1 and a novel mitochondria-targeted nanoparticle (SkQ1 NP), it was found that mitochondrial ROS scavenging could in situ inhibit DED-induced mtDNA oxidation and suppress NLRP3-mediated inflammation.
