Summary: Using gene deletion, heterologous expression, and biochemical characterization, researchers identified a unique fungal enzyme called CtdY that catalyzes the cleavage of the amide bond and formation of the 6/5/5/6/6 pentacyclic ring in the biosynthesis of PIAs. They also discovered a cascade of stereospecific oxygenases that further modify the pentacyclic intermediate in the production of 21R-citrinadin A. These findings provide insight into the key enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of PIAs and the complex post-translational modifications in the production of 21R-citrinadin A.

Summary: The rate constant for electron attachment to Mo(CO)(6) was determined to be k(a) = 2.4 +/- 0.6 x 10(-7) cm(3) s(-1) at 297 K using a flowing-afterglow Langmuir-probe experiment. The only anion product formed is Mo(CO)(5)(-). A slight decrease in k(a) was observed up to 450 K, and decomposition occurred at higher temperatures. The charge transfer reaction of Ar+ with Mo(CO)(6) is exothermic with an energy of 7.59 +/- 0.03 eV, which seems sufficient to remove the first 5 ligands from Mo(CO)(6)(+).

Summary: Industrial heterogeneous catalysts with high complexity and high performance can be simplified into models for mechanistic studies, although these models may have lower performance. To reveal the origin of high performance without sacrificing relevance, a holistic approach is presented by focusing on an industrial benchmark. Through a combination of kinetic and structural analyses, it is shown how the performance of Bi-Mo-Co-Fe-K-O industrial acrolein catalysts is achieved. The surface BiMoO ensembles decorated with K supported on beta-Co(1-x)FexMoO(4) are responsible for propene oxidation, while K-doped iron molybdate facilitates electron activation of dioxygen. Nanostructured vacancy-rich and self-doped bulk phases ensure efficient charge transport between the active sites. The unique features of the real system enable its high performance.
