Summary: Business as usual in the energy sector in the EU has become more challenging due to the inclusion of distributed energy technologies and supportive policies in the EU Energy Package. These changes have allowed new stakeholders, such as citizens, citizen collectives, and municipalities, to participate in the energy system in innovative ways, leading to social innovation in energy systems. This paper analyzes these socially innovative activities using a sustainability-oriented business model framework, and showcases the differences and extent of social innovation in the European context.

Summary: This article delves into how climate change could be a source of market risk, discussing the data needed to analyze climate risk drivers and how the equity market prices climate change and related risks. It compares top-down and bottom-up approaches to understand which climate risk is more likely to affect stock returns, and emphasizes on investors’ beliefs and asset pricing implications related to climate change risks. It concludes by suggesting further directions for empirical and theoretical research in climate finance.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between firm-level carbon productivity and volatility. It investigates whether firms with high carbon productivity are perceived as less risky by the market, given the growing interest in sustainable investing and the inclusion of carbon productivity in financial assessments. The findings show that carbon productivity is negatively associated with both total and idiosyncratic volatilities using U.S. firm-level carbon emission data. The results hold even when controlling for propensity score matching and coarsened exact matching, and are significant when considering intergovernmental regulations such as the Paris Agreement.

Summary: Water, energy and food are essential for human survival and sustainable development. With the impact of climate change, the study of climate change's effects on the Water-Energy-Food nexus has become a growing area of interest. This review examines research articles from the past seven years that investigate the impacts of climate change on the Water-Food, Water-Energy, and Water-Energy-Food nexus. The methods, tools, spatial scales, and future climate scenarios used in these studies are summarized and analyzed. The review finds that physics-based modeling is the most commonly used method, and the studies cover scales ranging from site to global. Future research challenges include spatial scale and resolution, internal physical mechanisms, novel artificial intelligence models, extreme climate events, competition within nexus systems, and data and model uncertainties.

Summary: Although small and medium enterprises recognize the benefits of resource efficiency, waste reduction, and material loops, their adoption of circular economy principles is still in its early stages. Existing literature on circular economy lacks research focused specifically on small and medium enterprises and tends to be vague and overwhelming. Moreover, these enterprises lack the financial and organizational resources to implement systemic changes to their already optimized business models. This study presents a conceptual approach and tools to guide small and medium enterprises in generating business model innovations, narrowing down solution options, and evaluating trade-offs in their transition towards circular value creation.

Summary: In recent decades, the impact of energy-related issues, such as energy poverty, energy transition, and energy security, has been widely discussed, especially after the Russia-Ukraine war. Few studies have reviewed earlier research to understand the conceptual development of this subject in the academic literature. Inspired by this interest and previous literature in this field, this study aimed to explore the past, present, and future advancements of critical issues in energy. Using the PRISMA method, the authors selected and analyzed review articles from databases such as Web of Science, Scopus, and JSTOR, resulting in a total of 2615 valid articles for analysis. The study's key contribution was the classification of cluster themes and the identification of potential future directions, emphasizing the role of governmental policies in addressing energy poverty, energy transition, and energy security in our daily lives.

Summary: Divestment is an inevitable decision by businesses including multinationals. Its implication for domestic investment has not been investigated especially in Eastern European countries. We used data on 23 Eastern European countries from 1991 to 2019 to assess the effect of outward and inward foreign direct divestment on domestic investment. We found that both outward foreign direct investment and inward foreign direct investment as well as their corresponding divestments crowd out domestic investment. The impact of outward foreign direct investment and its divestment crowd out domestic investment more than the crowding out effect of inward foreign direct investment and its divestment. The results of this study call for efforts to attract and retain inward foreign direct investment. These should build the respective Eastern European economies to an extent that the outward foreign direct investment and their divestment will not impact domestic investment as much as has been found.
