Summary: Frailty is common among elderly people living in extreme poverty in the Peruvian Amazon. Malnutrition and dependence are prevalent, and there is a significant association between nutritional status, dependence, and frailty. Assessing the health needs of these individuals and designing cooperative projects to address those needs is of great importance.

Summary: As the Korean society ages, the issues related to disabilities of elderly people living alone, such as physical, social, economic, and mental disabilities, have increased. This study aimed to examine the dietary conditions and behavior of elderly individuals living alone, using the nutrition quotient for the elderly (NQ-E) as an indicator. Data was collected from 103 elderly individuals living alone in Seoul, and the analysis showed that their nutrition-related dietary conditions were limited, although many received support from the government to improve their diet. The NQ-E score for these individuals was lower than the national average, indicating poor dietary habits and nutritional status.

Summary: The proportion of elderly living alone in Iran has been increasing in recent years. Urban residents are less likely to live alone compared to rural residents, and women are more likely to live alone than men. Lower education levels, being a student or homemaker, and being a pensioner increase the likelihood of solo living among the elderly. Additionally, the odds of living alone are higher in late old age compared to early and middle stages. These variables explain 16% of the variation in solo living among the elderly.

Summary: This study compared the prevalence of depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation in individuals living alone versus those living with others, finding higher rates of depression and suicidal ideation in individuals living alone. Socioeconomic status and physical health played a greater role in explaining the differences between the two groups, particularly in the age group over 35 years old.

Summary: With the rapid aging of the global population and the accompanying health issues, the demand for medical services is expected to exceed the capacities of medical systems in most countries. In response, various technologies have been developed to aid older individuals in living independently for longer and to alleviate caregivers' burden. This paper introduces a solution that utilizes binary sensors to capture and encode information on monitored individuals' activities into activity maps. These maps not only reflect activity intensity, but also the spatial distribution of behaviorally meaningful places. The paper also proposes an automatic analysis method for detecting deviations from established routines. Testing on public activity recognition datasets demonstrates the feasibility and numerous advantages of the proposed solution, including low cost, scalability, adaptability, minimal expert knowledge requirements, and protection of monitored individuals' privacy.

Summary: The association between the number of teeth and mortality is unclear. This study investigated the impact of the number of teeth and malnutrition on the 3-year all-cause mortality among very elderly individuals. The findings showed that malnutrition, but not the number of teeth, was independently associated with mortality.

Summary: This study found that depressive symptoms gradually decreased with prolonged periods of living alone among the elderly in South Korea. Both males and females exhibited a significant increase in depressive symptoms when they started living alone, which then decreased over time. The subgroup analysis revealed that females and the old-old group had higher odds of depressive symptoms in the first 3 years of living alone, while males and the young-old group showed higher odds only in the first year.

Summary: Food texture is important for food enjoyment and can affect food intake, especially for individuals with limited oral processing capabilities. However, there is limited information available on the textural quality of foods for these consumers. Inappropriate food textures can have negative effects on meal enjoyment and nutritional status. This review critically examines the scientific literature on textural properties of foods for individuals with limited oral processing capabilities, identifies research gaps, and discusses strategies for optimizing food textures to improve eating safety, food intake, and nutritional status.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a sarcopenia index based on malnutrition parameters for screening muscle wasting in elderly hemodialysis patients. The results showed that the combination of loss of strength, loss of muscle mass, and low physical performance correlated with malnutrition. Regression equations were developed to predict the severity of sarcopenia, and easily accessible anthropometric and nutritional parameters were used for screening.

Summary: This study investigated the association between dietary and serum magnesium and calcium with metabolic control parameters in diabetic women. The results showed that diabetic patients had lower serum magnesium levels, which were inversely correlated with HbA1c levels. Dietary magnesium intake was negatively associated with HOMA-IR scores but positively associated with serum magnesium levels. These findings suggest that increasing dietary magnesium intake in diabetic patients may improve metabolic control.
