This paper provides a comprehensive review of fabric rubber composites, focusing on accurate constitutive modeling methods and testing techniques. The potential applications of these composites in various fields are explored, and the need for updated analytical methods is emphasized. The findings of this work are expected to guide future research in developing high-performance fabric rubber composites.
Fabric rubber composites have attracted great interests among researchers because of their high specific strength and specific modulus. Developing accurate constitutive models is still a critical challenge as increasingly analytical requirements reveal unique and complex structure, nonlinearity, anisotropy, material interactions and multi-field coupling service environments, which requires a sufficient understanding of their structure and function. The point of this paper hence mainly focuses on a comprehensive and in-depth review of fabric rubber composites. Based on the current research achievements and requirements, we summarize three types of most practical modelling methods (empirical-based phenomenological, macro-continuum mechanics and directional model) whose potential of application and strategy of improvement are interpreted. The testing, fitting and numerical simulation methods of fiber, fabric, rubber and fabric rubber are also summarized, and the application prospect of fabric rubber composites in aviation field, manufacturing, the biomaterial is introduced. Compared with the research progress of carbon fiber resin-based composites, some important research topics are put for-ward. The findings of this work reflect that the constitutive behavior of fabric rubber composites is not well documented, and its analytical methods are limited and need to be updated. These results are expected to give some guidance to future studies in developing and designing high-performance fabric rubber composites.
